Penang is a family owned restaurant with a well established name within the White Rock and South Surrey area since 1998. This restaurant serve spicy Malaysian and Chinese dishes. In addition to their bargain lunch special (over 30 items to choose from that come with rice and soup) from Monday to Friday, Penang Szechuan Cuisine is also known for their popular curry, sambal and of course crispy orange beef.
Also, don't miss out on their delicious Malaysian style satay skewers serve with peanut sauce. Chosen by Vancouver Sun as one of the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants in the Lower Mainland.
I will go if I am in Abbotsford, and I will arrange plans around Penangs if I am going to White Rock.
So delicious, you absolutely must try the roti for sure. The food is always incredible, even the next day if you take some home - large portions & excellent service.
Don't change a thing!! Love
We enjoyed this Restaurant so much we returned after only a few days.
We were served large portions of Really Great Food - served with a smile from Cheryl the busiest Hostess/Server in White Rock.
We ran through a total of 10 dishes in our eating adventure and were quite impressed with the use of SPICES! NOT HOT - just FLAVOURFUL.
There was food on the table within 10 minutes of us placing our order. How only two Chefs in the kitchen could move so fast and produce such great stuff is still a surprise to us.
The Curried Chicken was the SUPER FAVOURITE both evenings.
Add a vegitable plate and there is more than enough for two hungry eaters.
Search no further if you enjoy spicy food. A wide variety of authentic Asian cooking representing Malaysian, Singaporean, and Chinese dishes, among others. They have a special Sambal sauce which adds a sharp and spicy flavour. Just the thought of it makes my mouth water. Best to make a reservation if you don't plan to wait.
When I came here I didn't think the food would be great because it was a little shabby looking. However the food is pretty much on par with other fancy malaysian restaurants I've been too. I ordered the string beans, satay, fried rice, curry and they were all delicious!
i was sceptical when my friend brought me to this little restaurant because i've always brag that richmond has got the best food. But when i tasted their food, I was hooked. I especially loved the crispy orange beef, if you like the chinese style crispy ginger beef, you will love their crispy orange beef. The sambal string beans with prawns were AWESOME, i just love the great flavour of their sambal. It is the best ever. No wonder they were voted the best asian restaurant in town. Those 2 dish are my favourites. Highly recommended.
We've been going here for about 4 years now and i've had some excellent tasting food in my life but this place is unbelievable.I thought I had found the best hot n sour soup in Seattle, but Penang's blows it away. The prawns and black bean sauce ,Kung pao chicken, sweet n sour chicken.General Tso's chicken and Singapore fried rice vemecelli are our favorites but everything tastes incredible there.Their diffrent sauces are very tasty and the Lunch special is great at only $6.00.It won an award this year and was featured in the Vancouver Sun .I can't say enough about the Penang.I't may not look like much but if they built a restaurant to reflect the food they would have to build a palace! The owners and staff are friendly and awesome. If you try the Penang ,you'll go back and if you don't try it ,you have no idea what your missing. The Penang is Prime, Superb!
I tried this place when it first opened and have back a few times since. Very yummy fried rice malaysian style with spicy sambal on the side as a hot condiment. Have tried some lunch specials and it was quite good including the hot and sour soup. The take out is fast and hot. Nice location in pretty White Rock on the hill.
I was expecting great food based on the previous review, but the visit did not meet our expectations.
We ordered Sambal Tofu, KungPao chicken, Black Bean Shrimp and Hot and Sour Soup. The first 3 dishes had very similar tastes, although they should have had 3 distinctively different sauces.
I've had my fair share of Kung Pao chicken, and this was not it. Black Bean Shrimp should have a more black bean taste, but again, it was the same sweet 'tomato-like' sauce as the Kung Pao. The Sambal Tofu had a faint taste of sambal, but leaning more to a sweetish taste as the first 2 dishes. These dishes were not bad, but just don't expect them to taste as they are labelled. My husband said that if you just thought of it as eating chicken, then it was ok, but it was definitely no kung pao chicken.
The worst of the lot was the Hot and Sour Soup. It is definitely not the best I've tasted. Rather, it was quite bad. It was hot, sour and SWEET.
IMHO, this restaurant is using too much sugar in their cooking. Everything was just way too sweet for our palettes. If you have a sweet tooth, then this can be an acceptable place for you.
Sorry to say, we won't be returning to this restaurant. It's just too bad.....we had such hopes for a good South East Asian restaurant in the White Rock area. Guess we'll just have to keep looking and hoping.....
