Iguana's Beach Grill is loacted just west of the legendary pier in historic White Rock. Enjoy the amazing beachfront view while dining on the heated patio or absorb the ambience of the oceanside interior filled with fun and atmosphere.
Generous portions of seafood as well as Californian, Mexican, and Italian cuisine combined with Jazz/Light Rock and the faint smell of sea air make for a good time every time.
Had the pleasure of lunch at Iguana's Beach Grill this past weekend - what a treat! Such a great location, with views of the historic pier and beach from both the patio and inside. I had the fish tacos, which were delectable! And they came with some of the best fries I’ve had in years. My friend ordered the smoked salmon flatbread – the presentation was fantastic, and it was delicious! The kitchen got the portions just right, too. The vibe is very friendly, and service was prompt and attentive. Top it off with good beer at a great price, and, well, if that doesn’t warrant a 5 star review, I’m not sure what does! Apparently they even had live music lined up for the evening; I wish I could have stayed longer, but I’ll certainly be back!
Iguanas is my favorite hangout on the beach. I live within walking distance of the strip and have tried just about every restaurant on the beach. Iguanas always calls me back, especially on weekends when they have live music. The funky classic rock-themed pictures on the walls add to the groovy atmosphere created when there's live music. The plank flooring is unique and the restaurant is open and inviting. It seems to appeal to everyone from couples young and old, families with kids, seniors and business-types in suits.
The food is always excellent, and the portions are huge! I've never left hungry. The burger patties are bigger than everywhere else, and don't even bother with the Iguana double-burger, you won't finish it! The steak cut fries are super tasty, ask them to make them extra-crispy and they will happily oblige. There are some tasty dips too, if like me, ketchup isn't your thing. The seafood ceasar salad is really good, basically Iguanas awesome ceasar with a generous portion of freshly-cooked seafood. The halibut fish & chips is another favorite. I also recommend the steak sandwich which is a cut above the rest I've tried in White Rock. There are always great daily specials. Iguanas has a good selection of beers on tap and they're served in a proper pint glass, around 25 ounces. Perfect for quenching your thirst on a hot summer day! Lots of cocktails, wine, margaritas, bellinis and other choices if beer isn't your thing.
The service is excellent and the wait times are reasonable. Friendly servers and other staff make for a great time, every time. Keep in mind, Iguanas can be busy during peak hours during the summer, but in my experience, every restaurant on White Rock beach experiences this. My favorite time to go is right after the lunch or dinner rush on the weekend or Friday evenings. The servers know the menu inside and out and are happy to make excellent suggestions.
I can't complain about the value when I love this place so much! The price is on par with other similar restaurants, but the portions are definitely bigger, so I give Iguanas two thumbs up! If you're still hungry after you finish, those tasty steak-cut fries are actually "endless"... or maybe they just like me because I keep coming back.
I live by the beach and have had the opportunity visits most of the restaurants on a regular basis. Iguanas food his fun and consistent, The place is a great place to stop by on the weekends when the live music is on and best of all they serve a pint of beer that is a real pint...not a sleeve or a jugger or all the other things they say when they are not serving a real pint..cheers to that!
My mother and love coming to white rock beach for a bite to eat around lunch time, we constantly find ourselves eating at Iguanas. Everytime we go the service is nothing but fantastic and friendly. You'll definitely never leave hungry, as the portins are majourly filling! The two of us have tried about everything on the menu, personal favourites would be the hot seafood Caesar, the wild mushroom chicken, and the as an appy the crab and Gouda dip. Iguanas has a great rock and roll vibe, as well as a rustic atmosphere. Lunch or dinner iguanas has never failed to please myself or my friends. I certainly recommend it if your looking to satisfy everyone, and get a great deal on a drink.
Eventhough there were still a few choices for brunch pretty late in the day, we ended up at Iguana's for two reasons:
- They weren't as busy as the other places (what we thought meant in and out in no time)
- This wasn't a pub-style eatery (an infant and toddler in our party).
We looked at their brunch menu posted outside their doors and thought it was a good choice (we were craving breakfast food). Walked in to a less than half-full restaurant and picked our table. Menus were plopped down and then we noticed there were no brunch items. We inquired about it, and they said they had just stopped brunch service, but would ask the chef if he could still whip some up. I thought that was a nice gesture. Unfortunately, she walked in the kitchen and immediately came back out and said, "No can do." I had to question whether or not she really did ask the chef. It wasn't like we were there an hour after they stopped brunch, it was literally within 5 minutes. So no big deal - we ordered off the regular lunch menu: a quesidilla, a burger, and a shrimp sandwich.
For three items that are pretty standard and basic assembly, it took forever for our meal to reach us. We waited, and waited, and waited for over half an hour to 45 mins. Normally, this isn't so hard to bare, but with 2 small children, the seconds can seem like minutes.
With each plate of food passing us, we could only dream it would be ours. When we finally got our food, it was only "okay". Nothing out of the ordinally and especially not worth the huge wait time. We just couldn't believe that such simple menu items took that long when there were only about 6 other tables occupied.
There are many other choices on the strip to enjoy - I would skip this one.
Recently we were invited to celebrate with a group of friends and have dinner at Iguanas.
We arrived at about 7:15PM, 10 minutes later menus were presented. We ordered a starter (crab dip) to share and our main dish at the same time at around 7;40, (some others had already ordered). The crab dip arrived at about 8:30 (the second food order to be delivered at the table).
At 9PM our main had still not been delivered. It arrived at about 10 minutes later. Order was a blue cheese burger with salad and a one-dish jambalaya, no bread rolls, etc. Verdict? The crab was good, the burger just so-so and the jambalaya could have been better from a box (sausgae hard, shrimp overcooked, vegetables limp).
We noted that a table of four adjacent to us where seated when we arrived and their food arrived just before leaving at 10PM (no idea when they ordered but you do the math).
The manager used the old excuse about being short staffed. One of our fellow diners heard this on her last visit here. If true then management should have adjusted the menu service accordingly.
So in short, the decor is eclectic, the singer was OK and not to loud, the server tried her best basically on her own. The wait was simply not acceptable and the quality of the food certainly not worth waiting for.
With so many restaurants to choose from on the beachfront this is one to miss.
Definitely a candidate for "Restaurant Make-over"
We had not been to Iguana's in about five years and thought we would give it another chance - so glad we did! Everything was great! It was packed but we were able to wait at a table inside for a patio table and were seated outside within 10 mins. Server was great, efficient, fast and knowledgeable. We ordered sangria to drink and it hit the spot. Then we had the tuna taco appy it was inventive and yummy. I had to seafood Caesar salad and my husband had the jambalaya both were delicious. My salad was huge and loaded with seafood. To top it all off a great band started playing - three young boys playing all Beatles. We will definitely be going back soon!
The sheer number of restaurants lining White Rock beach can turn dining there into a real guessing game. That was the situation over the weekend, when the girlfriend and I decided to try our luck after an afternoon on the boardwalk. Being infrequent visitors to the area, we determined to go to whichever restaurant appealed most as we walked by. Iguana’s, with its shady patio full of customers, caught our attention, and we decided to check it out.
After being shown to our table – right alongside the sidewalk, perfect for people watching – we kicked things off with an order of sangria. Strangely enough, despite the restaurant not being overly busy (all patrons were seated at the patio, about ten of us in total), it took a long time for our drinks to arrive. We must’ve sat at our table, without food or drink (not even water) for almost fifteen minutes. In the end, it was worth the wait. The sangria was good – refreshing and light, perfect for a hot day. Although, it would’ve been nicer if fresh fruit had been used, rather than frozen.
For appies, we chose to go with the crab and gouda dip. This dish was alright. However, I’m not sure if it was a case of the crab being too subtle, or the cheese being too strong, or possibly both, because neither the girlfriend nor I could really detect the seafood in the dip. The accompanying pita chips were unique, though, and quite tasty.
The girlfriend ordered, for her main, the halibut fish and chips. Her verdict – it was okay, but not great. There was something about the batter (she didn’t elaborate) that she didn’t quite love. She also didn’t like, in the least, the accompanying Asian inspired cole-slaw. She found the use of sesame oil in the salad off-putting; although I tried it, and quite liked it. For myself, I selected the steak sandwich with fries. It turned out to be a perfectly good dish. The garlic toast was crunchy, and the horseradish mayo gave the sandwich a nice zing. My only complaint was that my steak was slightly over-cooked, leaning more towards medium than the medium-rare I requested.
Service, after a slow start with the drinks, was decent, middle-of-the-road. Same too with the bill. In fact, middle-of-the-road would probably be a good description of Iguana’s overall. Not a place to either avoid or seek, it’s a nice average benchmark against which to compare other restaurants in the area.
We have been eating at Iguanas for well over two years now and have always had great service from Mary and the staff, the food is tasty and if there is ever a problem they fix it. Yes sometimes you have to wait but that happens EVERYWHERE so sit back and relax! . Also Iguanas live music on the weekends in great and one person to see if you can is Dennis Pook he is brilliant!
just before the weekend lunch rush, we chose this place because they seemed to have a few more people already seated then other restaurants on the strip. drinks came quick (but with hardly any ice on a hot sunny day), but then the wait started. i guess some may enjoy the wait when you're seated on the patio as you get to people watch, but not so enjoyable when you have to keep feeding the parking meter and you're hungry. the food was decent, and that's a hell of a compliment. fish and chips was an obvious choice for one of the diners in our party, but the thick coat of batter on the fish was way too much. our server devoted all his time between a table of customers he knew, and to some bikini topped girls who couldn't figure out whether they wanted to cover-up with some blankets or show it off. it took 10 minutes to get our bill, and then another 10 minutes to get our change. thanks, but we'll walk passed this spot next time.
Walking down the "strip" in White Rock, you might not give Iguana's Beach Grill a second look among the more flashy restaurants lining busy Marine Drive. Its quite small, with an inset storefront to make room for a decent patio.
I've been there twice (going again tonight) and both times have been excellent. Service has always been prompt and courteous; even on an extremely busy night where the server was run off her feet by a few large groups with special requests.
In terms of food, the menu is great; with choices to satisfy almost every palate. I've had the Seared Ahi Tuna salad, which was amazing. I've ordered similar dishes at other places, and NEVER have I been satisfied thanks to Iguana's! The second time I was there I went for a staple of White Rock, Fish and Chips. Though it isn't touted as a 'fish 'n' chip joint,' the food was solid. Not too much batter and perfectly cooked fish.
Give it a shot!!
This is a small restaurant right on Marine Drive. Excellent food, great service. Nice size, casual - go in your jeans. Four of us went a few weeks ago, we all had different entree's and all were just excellent.
We went here with another couple on a nice sunny day after walking around. It was pretty much full-and it was loud. They had a sax player playing amplified. It was impossible talk when he was playing, so insanely loud, and uncomfortable.
The service was horrendous!! It took over 20 minutes to get our first, and despite our wish to order more-our only, drink. It took over an hour to get our appetizers, and when never got mains as we had given up.
I really dont understand what these people are thinking with this restaurant. It was undeniable torture dining here. It will be a very long time before I give this restaurant another chance.
A friend and I were sent to Iguana's a couple weeks ago to give a review. Iguana's provided a gift certificate and they knew we were going to be coming in that night. That makes the experience we had all the more terrible, as they didn't even try to impress.
We walked in and stood near the hostess waiting to be seated. We were ignored for a good minute and then she looked at us and said "are you staying?". We should have said no!
Anyways, once we were seated at the bar we both ordered iced tea. They were out so the waitress suggested lemonade instead. What we got was pure lemonade syrup. It was completely undrinkable, and it was room temperature as well.
We tried to order some promising sounding desserts off the menu but we were told that they had given us out-of-date menus and nothing we'd ordered was available. So again we substituted. My friend got a stale piece of mousse cake, which she said tasted like freezer burn. I had a chocolate lava cake, apparently, although the amount of "lava" was negligible. I also ordered a special coffee, which never came. I watched her take out the mug and the ingredients, but she wandered off and forgot it.
The waitress also made a rude comment to the bartender right in front of us. She complained "I only have two good customers tonight and they're sitting right here".
The ambience was alright, but they lose points for the state of the bathroom. The live music was decent.
We got the bill and were a little choked to see how much we were charged for the lemon syrups. ($3 each) Both of them sat untouched, yet the waitress never asked us if there was something wrong with them. We were planning to tell her that it wasn't any good but after we got the bill she disappeared.
We finally got so frustrated waiting for her to come back that we left the gift certificate on the bar. We didn't want to leave a tip but we knew we weren't coming back so we didn't wait around for the balance.
Typically when you are getting a free meal you tend to be more optimistic and willing to accept slightly less. Like I said, we went there a few weeks ago and I still haven't thought of anything charitable to say about Iguana's.
the memories I have of Iguana's are more of bafflement than anything else. When I was growing up in white rock, damn near all of the friends I had in highschool at one point worked at Iguana's as cooks or waiters or something along the like.
so when I came back, years later.. I wasn't surprised to see that it was still the case: Kids working a restaurant run by old people that were never around and had no idea what can capture someone's dining experience and keep them coming back. I only really say this because the pricing makes you think you are dining at a semi-upscale beach-front icon. but I cannot stress this enough: you aren't.
The service was laughable, the food was mediocre and every time I went there on the weekend, there was some kind of goofy gimmick that they were attempting to pass off as entertainment. so I dunno. I guess if you are into that kind of thing, you'll probably like it.
but if you are, you are probably LIVING in white rock. and that explains a lot.
