Giraffe Restaurant is an intimate water front restaurant with a west coast fusion menu located in White Rock.
It's been a few years since we've been to Giraffe in White Rock. We've usually tried booking a reservation at the last minute and have been unable to get in as they've been fully booked. This time we booked a few days in advance in got in. They are a very small restaurant so reservations are essential.
We were given a terrific window seat. This restaurant is so nice and cozy. The tables are beautifully set and the rooms have such a nice warm feeling to them. All kinds of giraffe memorabilia. No loud distracting music.
The food is just superb. It's as good as we remember. We shared an appetizer of flippers - minced chicken, cream cheese and cilantro wrapped in won tun wrappers and deep fried. They were just terrific. For entress my husband had the lamb duo consisting of a nice piece of lamb tenderloin and a rack of lamb. The rack of lamb was crusted with mushroom and the lamb tenderloin had a mint demi glaze. I had ginger dusted sea bass. It was so delicious. Perfectly cooked, so moist, it was just heavenly. For dessert we shared a creme brulee duo - pistachio and the standard creme brulee.
Service was decent considering that there was basically one waiter and one bus person handling both rooms and it was busy.
It was nice to have a good selection of wines to choose from that weren't marked up 3 to 4 times what the actual cost of the wine is.
It was such a wonderful evening. We will definitely return and we will be sure to make reservations a few days in advance again. Highly recommended.
We wanted to find a really nice restaurant to take my son and daughter for a special birthday dinner so I researched DineHere for something that fit the bill. I had read mixed reviews for this restaurant but wanted to give it a try - there are always two sides to every coin.
Upon our initial arrival, I was very pleased with the ambiance, look and layout of the restaurant - very tastefully decorated and a very warm, cozy and welcoming feeling. We were shown to our table immediately and greeted professionally and politely.
Our waitress was pleasant and helpful and took our order in a timely fashion but returned with the wrong drink order for my son and forgot my daughter's beverage. I feel that either she was inexperienced or just not paying attention though she was very pleasant. A few too many "there you go" and "voilas" for my liking... she needed a little refining for a restaurant of this calibre. She did act on her errors right away so she was forgiven.
Our food arrived with a beautiful presentation, and amazing taste though my sons lamb was cold in the middle - he asked for rare but cold it should not be. I had the mussels for an appetizer which were magnificent and perfectly cooked. I enjoyed every morsel. The flavours were absolutely wonderful and I commend the chef for his choice and blend of flavours to complement the lamb. My daughter had duck which was delicious, I had the halibut and my husband had the Land & Sea. We were all mostly impressed with the combination of flavours, the freshness and meal itself. Lots of comments on how the food was - we all tried each other's.
The waitress did bring dessrts with candles for my son and daughter and sang Happy Birthday to them which was very sweet. She brought a big smile to their faces.
All in all, I would highly recommend giving this restaurant a try - the food was wonderful and the ambiance was perfect - especially on a sunny day. Two thumbs up.
Brunch on Sunday 13 March 2011. Restaurant was quite full so we figured it would be ok. We could not have been more wrong. Service was ok, but I had to ask the server twice for a glass of water. When I ordered the only unique thing on the menu, an onion tart, the server told me they were out. My nonverbal reply was to then go make more. But I instead chose the frittata, which was described as mushroom, spinach and cheese. When it arrived it was dry and tasteless. My partner order the french toast, which was described as stuffed with cream cheese and strawberries. What arrived was two pieces of bread with some strawberry goo in between the layers. No cream cheese in sight. Very small portions. Price with one cup of coffee: $27. Wow, what a complete disappointment. I would not recommend this to anyone I liked.
This is the nice small spot on the strip that is well worth the visit. The staff are very attentive without being overbearing. Each visit we have had we've found this to be the case, and the kitchen doesn't have you waiting very long between ordering, or between courses. When the food comes it is spot on. My personal favourite is the crab wonton appetizer, and I haven't had a bad entree yet. It is definitely a place to come for a special evening.
My wife and I celebrated our 16th anniversary at Giraffe in White Rock last night. The food, ambiance , service and entire dining experience was excellent. Our thanks to Jamie for making our night special.
We will definitely return as soon as we can. The crab wonton appetizer was excellent as was the halibut and thet portobello mushroom entree. I highly recommend trying to reserve one of the tables outside as the view is magnificent.
Went there for birthday celebration on a weekday night. Ordered 3 entrees, all turned out reasonable & in good portion, came with free & fresh bread. Fish was fresh but could have more sauce, pasta tasted sound of dry & bland, the duck was alright. Interior deco was classy but the music played on DOV was totally not suitable for the atmosphere. Service was quite efficient considering there was only one waiter doing everything in the dining room.
I've never submitted a review before but we recently dined at Giraffe's and the service was outstanding. Simon, our server, went beyond serving. It was an experience that all should take advantage of. I give Giraffe's a 10 out of 10 for exceptional service. We'll be back
We were very disappointed with our dining experince. Do not eat at Giraffes in White Rock. We were celebrating my birthday. The services was beyond slow, it took 45 mins for appetizers, it took over an hour for our dinner to arrive and then another 1/2 for dessert. Make sure you really want extra bread because they charge for extra bread. They don't tell you until you get your bill though. They gave us the wrong dessert, we said it was ok, just cancel the other one. The server said ok. A few minutes later the waitress brought the other dessert anyway. Then CHARGED US FOR IT!!!!!
A very disappointing Birthday Dinner. We will NEVER be going back there again.
Just tried Giraffe for the first time recently, and were really glad we did. The ambience and setting are wonderful, - nice and cozy and relaxed, with no great distractions to take away from enjoying a quiet, romantic and delicious, well-thought out and prepared meal. Although the one server was incredibly busy the night we were there, her manner and honest, friendly, approach were ideally suited to keeping us smiling, happy and willing to deal with any delays. Excellent menu and wine selection. Looking forward to our next visit.
Lovely place with great ambiance and wonderful service. Was somewhat disappointed by the food, which was good but not outstanding. I picked at my entree and passed on most of it due to an aversion to specific scents/spices that most people enjoy (entirely my own issue) but I did find the texture genuinely lacking. Dessert was very tasty.
Giraffe is on the expensive side, but honestly, compared to many of the White Rock, Downtown and Yaletown restaurants it is on a totally different level of quality, in terms of food and service.
The food is amazing. Fresh and unique ingredients that you can actually taste! I highly recommend any of the seafood, although the Sea Bass is most definitely my favorite. I dine out a lot and often pay these kind of prices, rarely getting this kind of meal. Even when they are incredibly busy the service is dedicated, and if you have the chance to be in during a quieter day, ask for a little more information and you will be treated to incredible knowledge of their products.
Yes it is more expensive than other restaurants on Marine drive but the food is fabulous. Ever ingredient that is put on ever plate goes together in harmony in your mouth, you know the Chef as thought about hitting every taste bud. My first visit to Giraffe was when I was 16 and 11 years later it is only better. My boyfriend and I went five times last year and plan to be back just as many this year. The service is always great, and I love the location. Some might say the menu is intimidating but if you ask they will glady explain anything to you.
Don't walk pass and say it is too expensive, go in and have a great meal.
Whenever we walk through the entrance of this restaurant it is like all the stressors of the world melt away and you cannot help but feel truly cared for. The food is incredible and the service phenomenal. The diversity of the menu keeps us coming back. Recently my husband and I "eloped" in front of a Crescent Beach sunset and chose this restaurant to continue the celebration with our closest friends. We highly recommend you try this one out for yourselves.
Still one of my favorite restaurants on the strip. Have been going there for 10 years or so. Crab wontons my fav. Everything is delicious here. It's pricey, but the service and food are worth the price.
I've seldom been disappointed by the food which has both imaginative but homey elegance. Usually it's outstandingly good and remains the most reliable bet for an evening of fine dining on the White Rock waterfront. I've lived here for 12 years and was sad to see other excellent restaurants fold - Giraffe's enduring quality and style are beloved by locals. The warm, funky, elegant interior and stunning view are worth the visit. The service strikes a perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness.Highly recommended.
Mixed experience last weekend. 6:00 reservation and we got our mains at 8:00.
Appetizer mussels were unevenly cooked - some perfect, some over - how do you do that? Curry sauce thin and tasted of curry powder. Empanadas special got rave reviews - weirdly they were described by the server as like perogies - they are pastry - but my partner tried them anyway and loved them.
Halibut special had a olive tapande topping which did nothing for the perfectly cooked fish, vegetables dull with a scoop of plain white rice. Creme brulee was perfect, one guests banana bread was burnt and tough and we had to ask to have it removed from the bill.
Nice wine list - well price with some different offerings. We weren't in a rush, had a great evening ... not sure if I would go back when there are so many less expensive options on the Strip.
We have been going to this restaurant for 14 years. The originol owner/operator/chef was a very talented and inventive lady. Her food was incredible. When the new lads took it over they continued it's excellence. We always go here for special occations and whenever the mood hits us. Their crab wontons are my favorite and the chillian sea bass is my husband's. Service is always friendly and the place has a warm and inviting feeling. I love the way the food is displayed on the plate making it that much more special. This place will always remain one of my favorites in White Rock - the other being La Baia.
The hardest thing here is deciding which entree to have. Every dish I have had here is sumptuous. The service is friendly and unpretentious. I have eaten here dozens of times and never had a bad meal.
I have been going to Giraffe for several yests. yes its pretty and you feel like you have found a wonderful warm secret place, but the food just isnt what it should be. expensive and underwhelming, small portions and overly stylized. If you want a small and special treat - try Pearl also expensive but at least the food quality is so much better than Giraffe.
sorry, but i wont be back.
