This place is great, despite all the bad reviews!

I don't know what everyone is talking about. I have been to Charlie Don't Surf twice now and had excellent food and service both times.

If you are wanting a great meal, at a reasonable price for a waterfront White Rock restaurant, you cannot beat Charlie Don't Surf!! The 3 course meal for $25 is a great value. You must try the root salad (spinach with feta, pecans and beets in a garlic vinegrette) it is fabulous! I had that and french onion soup last night and was completely satisifed. Of course I topped it off with a ice cream brownie for dessert though!

Trust me...I am a picky eater...this place does not deserve the bad wrap it is getting on this blog (oops, I mean guide)!

Jen from Cloverdale...new to area.

We go to Charlies once a month just for the great halibut tempura! Well our final visit to this place just happened. I dislike being lied to that oh yeah its the same batter, being ignored for 20 minutes, I would have had another glass of wine or two, and then admitting it might be the cook who made a different batter!! I was given half price off the fish, but a word of advice,,if the menu reads light tempura,, you should cook in a light tempura batter! I never get frustrated in restaurants but the server certainly hit a nerve or two!! There are other places with a view in your area!

Another White Rock Disaster

What a horrible place. The staff are clearly clueless, and incapable of handling the volume of business. It too close to an hour to get our food, which was room temperature at best by the time we got it.
The food was dry, and overcooked as well. We complained, but werent going to get it remade, as that would likely result in another hour long wait.
We didnt even eat half of our meals, and when we pointed out the poor quality, not even so much as an apology.
When charged full price for barely touched food and no consideration from the staff at all, we left no tip, and hopefully they get the message.

I wish I had checked this place out on here before visiting, it is stupid to see a place that is so consistently bad continue to be busy, obviously they wont bother to spend time, effort or money to fix the problems, when they're super busy despite being terrible.

I never researched reviews on Chalie Don't Surf before my FIance and I went there yesterday after spending some time at the beach, and I'm glad that I didn't. The reviews alone would have made me reconsider choosing this resteraunt over the many others on the strip.

Both my Fiance and I had a great experience at this resteraunt and we would both go back again. We asked for a table out of the sun and we had both just finished spending a few hours out in it and we got a table just inside the garage doors, so we got the view and the breeze without sitting in direct sunlight. The atmosphere was great, even though the resteraunt was full of people we could still carry on a conversation at a normal tone and not have to worry about not being able to hear the other person. The waitress was friendly and brought our drinks and took our order promptly as well as was always there to refill our waters when they started to get low. We ordered the nachos as a starter to share and they came out within 10 minutes and were large enough to share as well as they were delicious. For our main my fiance ordered the regular beef burger with fries and i had the cajun chicken burger with a side ceasar salad. They had the time between us finishing our appetizer and when they brought out the main timed perfectly so we had time to sit and talk and relax before the main came. My finace loved his burger and it didn't take him long to devour the whole thing, his fries were also amazing and i did end up eating quite a few of them. My chicken burger was cooked perfectly and whatever sauce they put on it was AMAZING. The side ceasar was over dressed in my opinion (but i like next to no salad dressing on my salads and that was my fault for not asking for the dressing on the side). I had half my burger and my fiance had fries left over so we took those to go. The bill is usually the part of dining that takes the longest to come and we had no problem this time. The waitress made sure we were content and ready to go before she brought us the bill as not to make it seem like we were being rushed.

Over all i was very happy with the food, wait staff, ambiance, and cleanliness of the resteraunt and i would definitely go back there and reccomend it to friends!

Absolutely wonderful

On New Years day looking for a place to dine we headed into White Rock.

Relatively new to the area I have not tried many local restaurants.

Charlies' looked so inviting and bonus, it was open.

We were greeted warmly, seated promptly and had the cutest table in the place. I was so impressed by the quaint and eclectic decor!

Our server was also prompt and super friendly and helpful.

The menu had a nice variety of items and the prices were totally resonable. I was actually expecting higher prices because of the amazing location over looking the beach!

My boyfriend had a simple hamburger platter. I did not try his burger but he certainly was happy with it. I did try the fries and they were amazing! It was priced around the $10.00 mark.

I myself had one of the best salads I have ever eaten. It was a beet, feta and spinach salad....it was to die for!!! It was wonderful. Also around the $10.00 price range.

It was so good that the next day I went shopping looking for the ingrediants to try to make my own version!

Will I return for more???....Absolutely! It is now one of my favorite restaurants

Great place for a drink... nothing more

Good ambiance, fun decor and a fantastic beach front patio... but the food sucks. Have a beer or glass of wine and soak in the White Rock crowd, then move elsewhere for some real food. Fish n Chips are average at best, and way over-priced for what you get. Nachos, calamari, salads... everything below average.

Terrible Serrvice
By jewelsjmm of Langley (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 2:34pm [Dine in]

I have been to Charlie Don't Surf three times now, every time wrse than the time before. The other day my boyfriend and I took a trip to White Rock for lunch, and he chose the restaurant. I knew from past experience that the service is terrible, but decided to give the restaurant one last try. We were the only people waiting to be seated, but for some reason it took over ten minutes for us to be shown to a table. A waitress kept coming by telling us that someone would be with us shortly. It was not as if the place was overly busy either; there were plenty of empty tables. When we were finally seated, we were seated on the patio at a table that had not yet been wiped clean. I assumed someone would be by shortly to clean it but that didn't happen. We ordered our drinks and food, and my boyfriend was served his beer in a dirty glass, so the waitress took it back. I went to use the washrrom and found the toilet filled with toilet paper; it was completely unusable. I told the waitress but she already knew and just said to use the one remaining toilet at the far end of the restaurant instead. I returned to our table and the waitress still hadn't brought back a replacement beer. At this time it has been about 25 minutes to half an hour since we had been seated. We were now getting anxious for both our food and the beer. She finally brought the beer and in passing it to my boyfriend she dropped another drink all over me. It got all over my shirt and pants. She was apologetic, however I thought she was going to bring me a damp cloth to try to clean up a bit; instead she passed me a few paper napkins. Now I was wet (and not just a little (my pants were covered in the fruity smelling drink she silled on me), we had had bad service from the beginning and our food had yet to arrive so we left. Needless to say, we will never be back.

BEST on the strip

We were regulars at Charlie's and never had a bad experience there. We even ordered things not on the menu and loved the patio for people watching. The first time we went there I had a cracked tooth and my boyfriend called all the places on the strip to see if they could puree food for me, Charlie's was the only one that said no problem. I ordered the french onion soup and the chef served it to me, MMMMMM best ever it was made with parmesan instesd of mozza. The best part of going there was the awesome male waiter who always made us feel like VIP's and really knew how to give great service. The manager was also always attentive and went out of her way to make the experience enjoyable and promply corrected the one problem we ever had there. From previouse reviews i read I guess it depends on your server, we requested the same waiter every time. We now live in Abbotford and have driven all the way to white rock just to go to Charlie's.
