Creative, fresh West Coast cuisine
Hot summer night, and we stopped in for an early dinner before a beach walk. Granted, the restaurant was near-empty given the early hour, but we had none of the issues with service experienced by the previous reviewers. Service was efficient, friendly, prompt, and we didn't feel rushed in any way.
Bread on the table with a nice olive butter. The pepper-crusted tenderloin special was fantastic, served with risotto rather than potatoes as requested. The halibut was served on risotto with some nicely cooked vegetables, and a divine sauce. We weren't intending on ordering dessert (too full!), but a complimentary apple pie of sorts arrived on the table along with ice cream - nice touch.
Prices were a bit on the high side, but the Entertainment Book helped with that. We had a wonderful evening, and - despite the negative reviews - plan on returning.
Had a good meal here last Sunday. The place was packed. The wine list has lots of choice. Shared a salad and we each had a different pasta dish. There's a good selection on the menu and several daily specials. They also have entertainment on Wednesdays. I'll be back.
Just went there for Sunday brunch. Not a good experience. We all agreed that it was a sub-par meal. This place used to be good, ten years ago. Had seafood fettuccine. I suspected the chef considered this a 'get rid of old fish day' because it was just salmon and cod, very bland and boring. No mussels or clams or prawns. The serving was too small as well. Well, it would have been if the meal had been worth eating. Russell Lemon Ale was the only bright patch. Outsider art on the walls, more challenging than pleasing. I will never come here again despite enjoying dozens of meals here in the past. It's just well past its prime. Washington Avenue Grill is a similar style outfit -- upmarket bohemian -- but the execution is far better.
Dined there with a group of friends. The special halibut of the day was in Chinese five spice smothered in sweet sticky sauce, with orange peel on the top. Atrocious. Clearly prepared by someone whose ambitions run higher than their skill level. Started with calamari, which, had I been blindfolded, I wouldn't have known what it was. The service was a combined effort of several people who seemed to be floating around not really knowing what the other one was doing. Overpriced for a failed attempt at being fine dining. If this place is popular I can only guess it's because there is limited choice in the Crescent Beach area. Oh, and they apparently have good live music on Wednesdays. They will never see me here again.
Good food, drinks. Nice chocolate martini, food selection is a constant- seems like same stuff all the time. Otherwise staff is nice, ambiance is nice. Mostly couples and not to loud for a little romantic dinner. Worth a try if you looking for a quite place to eat in the White Rock area, right off of Crescent Beach road.
Firstly the food quality rating deserves a four.
The service was acceptable, though initially I was beginning to feel neglected, seated and ignored - for which the waiter, without a prompt from me, apologized. The service rated a three; with the owner's customer interaction a four.
What brought the overall rating down was two-fold. Most of the menu items I ordered, were just not available. Sorry sir your selected appetizer is off, we are out of the wine you want, and we can't make you an espresso - our machine is broken. Was this just a busy Tuesday night anomaly, or a Fawlty Tower's - "Duck's off" moment? The food items I was served were of very good quality.
The second problem is that the main dining room is intrinsically so sonically reflective - all hard sound-reflecting surfaces, with little sound absorption. If there is anyone with an annoyingly loud or grating voice close to you, they also become your unwanted dinner companions, you can't help but hear them. Well, two tables away I had two obnoxious loud unwanted companions. They would not have not been so intrusive, if the room's construction materials had naturally absorbed some of their conversation. I suspect that magnitude of this sound amplifying effect varies from table position to table position. There are ways to fix the room's sound problems without throwing buckets of money at it, so atmosphere gets a two.
Without these two problems the overall dining experience would have rated a four. I'll probably return and see if the dining experience improves.
A friend and I decided on a last minute lunch out in Crescent Beach. On a cold, windy, rainy November it was so nice to arrive at a cozy restaurant and be seated quickly. Very nice decor - the walls are full of art done by local artists, available for sale. No vast expanses of drywall here or cold stainless counters.The waiter was efficient, brought ice water with lemon, read the daily specials, took our drink order and gave us time to check the menu before returning for our order. My friend had the quiche special of the day, (an very generous portion) served with a fresh caesar salad and I had the salmon with salad. This could possibly be the best salmon I've eaten. It was very fresh and done to the precise moment as to bring out the flavors without the often had over cooking. We each had a glass of wine off of the well balanced wine menu. Too full to be tempted by the dessert offerings, we were happy to enjoy the chocolates that came with the bill. Definitely will be going back with a group for dinner in the near future.
I have always enjoyed dining here and have many times since it opened and recommended it highly to my friends.. This time the first thing we noticed was that the prices were higher. We ordered our meals, there were 4 of us. The waitress was quick and efficient taking drink orders and our menu selection. I noticed on the entree section that it didn't list vegetables so asked what it came with, since you used to get a large portion of nicely prepared veggies with your meal. Well the food came, I'd ordered 1/2 rack of lamb. It was tasty and cooked to my liking. The veggies were 2 small broccoli stalks that were hidden under my lamb and a tiny pototo crochet. We were all shocked at the increase in price and reduction in the food. I am not a big eater and I was still hungry at the end of the meal. We were all highly disappointed and I will not be in a hurry to return unless I start to read some improvement in the quantity.
Also we were placed beside the 'wine cellar' and we were entertained by 2 employees chatting inside the door.
Not sure where to start. Dined here twice previously and enjoy great meals at decent prices. This time around was the worst I've seen in a restaurant of this calibre. Service was non existent. Lack of stock of wine. Ordered a glass of pinot noir but they were out. Decided to order a bottle of something else and server couldn't find it. Finally decided on a wine by the glass that was just ok (definitely opened for a few days). We were the only table in there and when 3 other tables walked in we didn't see our server again for over 45 minutes. He was the only server in the restaurant with a young girl as an assistant. Waited for someone to clear our appetizers which we had finished 25 minutes earlier, finally when the girl (not the server) came to clear she then offered the dessert menu. I said we didn't even get our entrees yet. Next thing we get a rubber duck which was cooked all the way through (requested medium) and a very thick piece of DRY halibut (sitting under a warmer WAITING for the server to pick up the food) delivered by the girl (not the server). Finally when the girl (not the server) decided to come back she asked how everything was the food was picked though and we were done I told her that it was overcooked and dry. She then went to tell the server and the server finally arrived to apologize for not serving us because he had 3 other tables (can't imagine what he'd be like with 5 tables) and apologized in a soft voice about the food. There was no attempt to rectify this poor experience, so I then asked for the check since we were not wanting to try dessert after that performance. Level of service can usually be determined by how long empty water glasses sit on the table before they are refilled. 2 times the girl came to the table the glasses sat empty, it wasn't until I waved her down after choking on the dry piece of halibut that we would like some of the FREE water. This restaurant has a WOW factor. Wow, can't believe how horrible it was.
Wife and I had an entertainment coupon so we decided to try it as we'd heard good things about it.
Evening started out awkward as the waitress broke my wife's water glass on the table shattering on her and water every where. She handled it well and was apologetic. Should have offered to cover our appy as a result but didn't.
The flank steak appy was excellent.
Wife had the jerk chicken which was spicey but tasty. I had the Alaskan Halibut with a raspberry butter sauce and came with a nice risotto and fresh veg. One of the best fishes I've had in years.
We split a piece yummy and sweet pecan pie for desert and she had an after dinner coffee.
The $16.00 off for the entertainment coupon helped but with tip we still shelled out $100.00. Glasses of wine are close to $10.00 each as are the deserts so be aware before you go. I recommend it on the food alone not the price.
Have been going to Beacher Street for years. Within the past year the managment staff and cooking staff has gone DOWNHILL. The food is not what it used too be and the staff are lazy and rude. Have now found a much newer, fresher, funner place too go on 34th in which you get much better quality and quantity as well as AC for those hot nights. Talking with anyone about Beacher street and they all agree - its a thing of the past.
I went to Beecher Street Cafe around 2:30 pm on Dec.19th for brunch.First off,the cafe was cold,so I was uncomfortable.I ordered a regular eggs benedict.The fruit salad was unpalatable.Honey dew melon was included which was hard and unchewable and the portion was miniscule.The eggs were a bit under cooked as I had asked for medium poached and there as hardly any hollandaise sauce on the eggs.The sauce was bland and tasteless.The English muffin was tough.There was a wee piece of ham included which had a tough rind.This cost $12.99.The waiter was good and so was the pint of Russell lager I ordered.I don't know who the chef was(and I use that term lightly)but there was no effort put into the cooking of the food or the presentation.Oh,there was a very small portion of potato which was blackened.I should have sent the order back and left,but was hungry so I ate the eggs.This surely was a very,very poor experience.Stay away from this establishment if you are looking for a good meal.How disappointing!Also far too expensive for what you get.
We have been frequent customers at this restaurant in the past few years and have always enjoyed the great food and great wait staff. Something happened! There seems to have been either new Chefs or new ownership. The food was not as good as we remembered it and the staff had the air of being put out that they had to be serving us.
I will give them one more chance and if the service and the food are not back to the usual standard, this will be a place that we will not return to.
I don't know what's happened to the Beecher Street Cafe. It used to be a great restaurant. However, we were very disappointed on our last visit. The food was okay, it might have even been very good, but we were so frustrated by the bad service, that it ruined the meal.
Our waiter made the occasional appearance at other tables. He brought them water, menus and bread. He even took their orders and brought them food. However, we were pretty much ignored. Eventually, he took our order and within a couple of hours our food arrived. In the meanwhile, we had ordered a beer and a cocktail and after a while they were brought to us - warm!
We were in the restaurant for close to 3 hours and in that time we had 1 round of warm drinks and our entrees (no appetizers, no bread, no after dinner coffee or dessert). Our water glasses were filled once and then left to sit empty (even though we asked several times for more water).
On top of the bad service, the restaurant was very hot - no a/c, not even a fan! It was a dreadful experience and we will not be returning. Too bad, it used to be a favourite place.
One of my absolute favourite restaurants in the White Rock/South Surrey area. A warm and pleasant ambience makes for a more distinguished atmosphere, suitable for whatever the occasion. The staff are remarkably friendly (a trait unfortunately rare in the restaraunt industry) and always willing and helpful. The food is delicious especially the Goat Cheese appetizer and the Curry Chicken Fettuccine. Their homemade desserts are delectable, try the Belgium Chocolate Moose.
We experienced to slowest service in our entire dining history at this restaurant. We arrived at 7p. Our waiter took our wine order and then disppeared for about a half hour. We called over another staff member to say that we were ready to place our order and she said she would find the waiter. Instead a waitress came over and haughtily informed us that our waiter was busy preparing specialty coffees and she would take the order. Our appetizers arrived after 8p - well over an hour of us being seated. The entrees and dessert arrived at a painfully slow pace as well. By the time the entire meal experience ended it was close to 11p. In fact we watched as a kitchen helper finished her shift and left for the evening BEFORE us! We would have likely opted for another restaurant had we been in a city centre where options would have been more numerous; however, in this corner of the world there are slim pickings. The meal though decent was certainly not worth the wait nor the journey over to Crescent Beach. We shall remember this place not for the food but rather as the restaurant where we encountered the poorest service EVER.
Beecher is our favorite restaurant in the White Rock/South Surrey area! It has a charming, romantic ambiance and the food always lives up to expectation. We have always had a wonderful time and find the manager and wait staff to be very pleasant, knowledgeable and friendly. We have frequented this restaurant 2-3 times a month for over a year now and often bring guests from out-of-town. I would highly recommend it!
Although I say it's a hidden gem... I guess it's not that hidden or secretive anymore as each of my 4 or 5 visits over the years the restaurant has been quite busy. the fist time I came upon the restaurant was when a girlfriend and I were out for a winter walk in the quiet and dark community of Crescent Beach. As we were walking back from the beach we took a different path back to our car and out of nowhere came upon Beecher Street cafe. It was very surreal as the whole neighbourhood was so quiet and all of a sudden we opened the door to this vibrant restaurant with live music and great food. the staff was super friendly and within our first visit we felt like we were regulars who had been coming for years. Definately try the Ahi Tuna appetizer or the Calamari to start. The Rack of Lamb and the Halibut are favorites for dinner. Go check it out and see if you enjoy it as much as my girlfriend and I do.
