Bf decided to take me here for my b-day and it was a very good dining experience and I'm glad we were able to find the place! The restaurant is quite hidden and we managed to drive by it 3 times before spotting it. I think it's because of the signage of the restaurants on either side of it drowns out the appearance of this place.

The food was absolutely excellent. We ordered the wrapped tenderloin, lavender lamb chops, vegetable springrolls, sea-scallops and tiger prawns - yin yang style, seafood capellini and very berry cheesecake to end things off. Everything tasted really great and if I had to choose favorites, I would go with the seafood capellini and sea-scallops and tiger prawns - would def. go back just to have these 2 dishes again! The only thing disappointing was the cheesecake - the middle was still frozen but the parts that weren't frozen were very tasty. Martinis were amazing as well - try the baby pink!

Server was actually really friendly and I would've given it 5 stars if she hadn't been so forgetful. Everytime she would clear our plates away, she would also take away our cutlery but she would forget to replace it! This happened at least 3 times and we ended up just getting the cutlery and dishes ourselves from a nearby table. It's also a shame that dishes come out one by one since it would have been much better dining experience if we had 2 or 3 dishes to work on at once.

The restaurant is quite clean and has really nice lighting - great place to take a date. Would def. considering returning to dine here again, if only for the capellini and scallops and prawns!

Awesome tapas at a very good value

Four of my friends and I came here tonight for dinner. We arrived at 8 pm and were promptly seated by the server. This restaurant was actually introduced by my friend as it's her favorite fusion tapas restaurant. Since 5 of us shared everything, so we ordered:
1. Shoestrings that was good and crunchy yet not oily. I think the oil temperature that the fries went into the deep fryer was high enough so the fries didn't absorb the oil. It was also served with balsamic glaze. Yummm.
2. Scallops on yam. The scallops here were humongous compared to other restaurants I've been to, including Market by Jean-Georges. N, it was cooked to perfection, being the middle still a little raw and very juicy, unlike Market where the scallops were thoroughly cooked until a little rubbery.
3. Awesome lamb rack. The seasoning for the lamb rack is very different from other restaurants being the herbs were very balanced and it was cooked well that it's tender.
4. Curry mussels that was a little spicy with very tasty sauce. All of us loved this dish, the mussels were cooked to perfection meaning not at all rubbery. We tried Chambar before and we were happy with them but now we will not go anywhere else for mussels but here. It also came with naan so that we can dip it in the sauce.
5. Duck breast with some element of chinese sauce. We all love their duck breast, it was cooked to perfection again. The center is still a little pinkish and it was very very tender. Adding the sauce also made it rise to another level .
6. Black cod with prawns. This is maybe the best dish of the whole restaurant. We thought that the plating of this dish was excellent. It took my friends 5 mins just to take pics before we could start digging in. It was very super tender with buttery melt in the mouth texture and again cooked very well. Unlike other fusion tapas where the sauce used miso and jap seasoning, this resto used sth else that tasted better, with the "WOW" factor.
7. Berry cheesecake. It was good but I had better cheesecakes outside.
8. Molten chocolate with ice cream. My gfs couldn't stop eating and only left me a bite. How sad cuz it tasted very good and I wanted more but they ran out of another one tonight. :-(
All in all, we love this restaurant and this is definitely our new fav resto and it wasn't expensive. With this quality in downtown, we would pay $65 min but we only paid $45 inc tax n tips here. I would definitely recommend this gem to all my friends.

Nice White Rock find!

My girlfriend and I stumbled across this place on a busy long weekend.

Decor is a little more upscale for a tapas place. Dark colours surround you and trendy dim lighting make the ambience a little more inviting.

We ordered the Asparagus Spears, Chili Prawns, Shitake Dusted Scallops, Lavender Lamb Rack and Balsamic Short Ribs. Our dishes came one by one and were pleased with our item list. Dishes are simple but are prepared very well with complimenting flavours bursting. I especially liked the scallops and lamb rack. The scallops were seared nicely and I loved the ragout on the side. The lamb racks had a dry rub and was grilled to a nice medium pink. The accompanying sauces for our short ribs, lamb and scallops were perfectly balanced and didn't overpower.

However the dishes are small and the prices are a little high but overall our dishes were mouth watering to say the least and I enjoyed our meal.

It was quiet during our stay so admittedly the service was good for the night. Our hostess/server was personable and friendly and checked up on us throughout our meal.

For a more formal tapas dining experience I would give this place I try. I will give this place a subsequent visit (hopefully when it's busy) to see if the food will be as good.

Finally! Asian-fusion that is actually tasty! After haveing been rejected for a late-dinner at the Boathouse, we took a short walk over to 14981. It did not disappoint!
It was already about 10:30pm on Sat night, and we asked a server at the door what time they stop serving food. We got a response, "Very Late". Worked for us!
We were seated in the back section by ourselves (a party of 7). Two couples in our party ordered the tasting menu for 2. Considering the amount of food and the quality, it was a good deal at $60 - 5-course tapas for 2 and 2 desserts.

I enjoyed my Wor Tee appie. Very lean chicken meat and scallion fried gyoza served with a light spinach salad. The molten lava cake with ice cream was to die for - the best I've ever had.

The presentation with all the dishes were VERY pretty. Service was friendly. Only one thing weirded me out. Near the end of the night, the servers walked around the restaurant with flash-lights to do some cleaning. Good on them for making sure the restaurant was clean, but it was really weird when beams of light hit our eyes. Made me feel like I was in a theatre being shown my seat.

I do agree with a previous post about the wait time between courses. But I would definitely recommend 14981 as a tasty choice on the strip.

Dropped in for a light lunch on Sat. as we were in the area running errands. Read so much about it that I've wanted to give them a try.

Strangely empty at the noon lunch hr peak, we attributed that to the closed patio on a sunny day.

The seafood chowder looked & tasted exactly of Campbell's mushroom soup slightly diluted. It lacked any seafood flavour save for the 1 large cooked shrimp & 1 mussel w/ shell & the tiny bits of seafood. The butternut squash soup topped was pretty standard. The lightly buttered pita served on the side is pretty good tho I doubt it was made in-house, but never inquired.

The strawberries used in the salad's pretty well-picked. The curry mussels didn't seem fresh & either cooked a little too long or perhaps, previously frozen too much. The curry sauce tasted very much of the prepackaged/jarred variety.

The string frites looked promising clean enough in colour dressed w/ balsamic vinegar all throughout. We had about 3 fries b4 we spotted the deep fried golden hair-like thing tangled btwn the net of fries. The server was very pleasant & quick to take it back into the kitchen for a new batch. The same fries was brought back out to us refried... much darker & very crunchy as a result & the parts that had the balsamic vinegar on it showed a darker streak across the brown of the string fry. It was even more so oily by this time. We still ate at probably over half since I don't think they spat in it. We packed the leftover mussels & tossed it out b4 getting back into the car so that they wouldn't recook those & give it to the next unsuspecting diner.

We wanted to try at least the chocolate lava cake but since he told us it'll only take 1 min. to prepare (that already was shocking in itself) we opted to wait until our meal was over before placing the order. I had the last refried string I could tolerate while fuming over their practice, we unanimously decided to skip the instant dessert & not give them any more of our business.

We'd had appetizers at a wine party earlier and felt like we needed a light meal.

We had curried mussels with naan (not bad but not my favorite dish), sockeye salmon (part of it was slightly overcooked but it was tasty nonetheless) and Thai drumettes (these were really good - nice and spicy) When ordering a la cart of the menu I felt the items were slightly overpriced.

It was a nice setting, service was good and the food was good, not exceptional but good.

We would return.

We went on a cold Saturday night and had the 6 course seafood tasting menu for 2 for $68. We really enjoyed every seafood course but we LOVED the Curry Mussels, Szechuan Chilli Prawns, and the Chocolate dessert and the Apple Strudel with ice cream. For $68 we were both stuffed and had a wide variety of beautifully presented, tasty, and very fresh seafood.

We first tried this restaurant 2 years ago and had the 6 course non seafood tasting menu and also found the food amazing 2 years ago. Both times we have been there the restaurant was pretty quiet and not very busy...we just hope they stick around because we love their food and find it different from most of the other common fare on Marine Drive in White Rock.

I almost didn't go here tonight, when some family invited me to come. I'm really glad I did go, because I've found a really decent food tapas place! We had the set seafood (chilli prawns, calamari, curry mussels, scallop and tiger prawns, sockeye salmon) and a few other items like the saddle pork, panko crusted oysters, portabello mushroom with goat cheese, vegetable spring rolls, snow crab cake, and pesto foccaccia. for dessert we got tiramisu cheesecake, berry cheesecake, and molten chocolate cake.

Everything was really good. It was a slow night, being wet and dreary, so there weren't many people.

We started with the crab cakes, and I have to admit, I've always HATED crab. But I came here with the spirit of trying at least a piece of everything, even things I normally don't like. The crab cakes were incredible! I'd go here just to have decently cooked fresh crab cakes. They were soft and pan fried; not deep fried, so they were not greasy and hard. It was a good taste, it had none of that awful crab taste that I so dislike. Everything was very good actually, but the stand outs were the things that I don't like that I found I liked here.

I also hate squid normally, but the calamari was really well done, soft - not rubbery on the inside, and lightly crispy on the outside. The garlic aioli was the perfect complement for them.

The curry mussels were really addictive! One guest ate the rest of the sauce with the naan. The flavours of the curry were quite unique.

The two prawn dishes were my favorite; scented of the grill, and done just perfectly. I hate places that overcook the seafood so that it's rubbery, but the prawns here were perfect. I wish we'd gotten another plate of the prawns, actually.

The salmon was a very good dish as well. The contrast between the two types were nice, and that onion-mandarin dressing was just delicious with the salmon. I wouldn't mind being able to have a jar of it for when I bake salmon bites for appetizer parties.

I did not eat any of the pork, since I don't eat pork, but everyone else gobbled it up very quickly. It must have been good.

I could go on at length about each dish, but since we ordered so many it'd be too wordy. Nothing was mediocre, it was all very good, perfectly cooked, the presentation was so pretty. You can tell he has pride in his cooking by just looking at the plates. We asked the chef to come out so we could talk to him, and thanked him for such a wonderful meal.

I look forward to returning, and bringing my food snob friends here to eat! They're so picky about the freshness and uniqueness of food, but they'll probably love this place too!

I recently had the six course tasting menu at Fusion and really enjoyed the flavours. The scallops were cooked perfectly (not overcooked) and the lamb chops were very tasty. We really enjoyed the apple strudel but we were quite full by the end of the meal. I was disappointed that there were not more people dining there because it is a fine restaurant and I would hate to see it disappear because of a lack of support.

It is still my top choice restaurant on the beach, period
By LowTEC of White Rock (8 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 4:48pm [Dine in]

It's been awhile since my last visit to Senses. I generally enjoy going down to the beach in off season, because that's the only time we can find a parking space and without another 50-people crowd surrounding you. Went back to Senses last weekend to enjoy a wonderful dinner. We especially like this kind of restaurants where you don't have to dress up formally to enjoy a high quality dinner, we felt relax and comfortable there. The decoration is thoughtfully laid out, and the atmosphere is rather warm and romantic, wife loves it.
Started with a few martini's, which we didn't have a chance to try last time. They were smooth and tasty, before we realized, both my wife and I had 3 for each of us already.

Then we moved on to the tapas, no surprise, they were as good as last time. In fact they've got better! We didn't hesitate to ask the server for some recommendation, she provided a couple like the pan-seared black cod, pork saddle tender tower, curry mussels, Oh My God, they are simply to die for. The black cod was so soft it literally melts in you mouth, it's that good. The curry, I was told it's their own secret recipe, is one of a kind, I personally haven't tried a curry dish tastes as good, but I have to warn you, the curry is quite spicy, if you can't take spicy dishes, then I wish you luck. We felt guilty because we couldn't stop ordering more and more. We ended up only able to share one molten chocolate cake, although we were already full, but it was just too good to pass. If only we could vote for another star on the food rating!

Second Visit Not as Good as First

A return visit was a little disappointing, the food was just OK, while on a previous visit it was delicious.

The mussels were overcooked, and rubbery, the salad i had was very oily and wilted, quite sad.

Also, the service dropped as well. Inattentive, and very disinterested. I think perhaps this restaurant is getting to comfortable with itself.

Hopefully they choose to fix these problems, but they appear to be quite busy, so they may not. Again, why would they spend the money to make a restaurant better when the customers come anyways.

Pretentious and Unwelcoming

Submitted Sunday, August 23, 2009 - 1:24pm [Dine in]

First visit to 14981 in White Rock, and found the location quite nice. It was on the main strip, so we expected it to have nice food like most of the other locations around there. However, it was very disappointing.

The food was very standard fare, but completely overpriced. For example, two spring rolls cost $10, and obviously these were simply frozen store bought ones that were deep fried in their kitchen. Things were even worse with the "Mandarin Chicken Salad" which consisted of a few wilted Spring Mix leaves bought from a grocery store, and dressed with a very dry piece of chicken breast.

The drinks were really poorly mixed-- the martini we ordered was under chilled and had a strong smell of an old Maraschino cherry, probably left out for a while and just dropped into the drink at the very end. Even the hot water we ordered tasted tinny and obviously had a little bit of old detergent stuck in the cup.

Overall a very disappointing visit to 14981, and I would not recommend anyone go to this restaurant with so many other better choices around in the White Rock area. This is a pretentious and unwelcoming restaurant with an unfair price point for the low quality food it serves.

Went there this evening with some friends after reading the reviews from this site. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal. It wasn't busy, as it was a Monday evening but the service was still excellent and the food came out quickly. All the dishes we tried were tasty and the martinis were delicious too.

If you decide to go on the weekend, make reservations and expect the food to be a little slower coming out of the kitchen due to the volume of diners.

Dishes are a little pricey but overall had a great experience. I would definitely recommend it to friends.

The service was also very good. Portions were a little on the small side, but I will definitely visit this restaurant again. A must try if in White Rock and looking for good quality food.

service- young man who was very polite and obliging.
food- we ordered a couple of dishes... none were that outstanding. They were decent to poor. After being rated by so many viewers as a the best restaurant in Whiterock we were quite surprised. Here is what we ordered so you can get and idea:
We had the price fixed menu which included:
-cesar salad
-salmon spring rolls
-chili prawns
-beef tenderloin
-short ribs
-chocolate moulton cake
-tiramasu cheescake

The only thing that was good was the chocolate cake and chili prawns.
ambience- it was nice, and relaxing... other than the fact that the people across from us were making out lol!
Oh, and my boyfriend went to the bathroom and he walk right out because it looked like a chevron station bathroom.. filthy.

I haven't been to White Rock in years, and I will definitely go back because of 14981. I went there for lunch with a girlfriend. It was sunny and we sat ourselves in the patio. We were going to order fish and chip, which would have been a big mistake!! We were attracted by the food listed on the menu. This is what we've ordered: Chilli Prawns (Exquisite), Smoked Salmon Spring Rolls (very Unique!!), Crab/Shrimp cakes (Something Different, a mixture of tender crab and chewy shrimp), Pork Saddle (great pork very juicy and apples soaked in wine was definitely a chef recommendation!) and the Apple Strudel (hmm.. Warm apple fillings with phillo and Ice Cream!!) The food was extraordinary, a blend of different ingredients and textures which made it very unique!! I find the price relatively inexpensive with a combination of great food + service + view. I would definitely return to this restaurant!

I have been going there almost since it first opened and it is still one of my favorite places to dine. Everything I have tried is excellent, like the wentzel duck breast, lavendar lamb chops and the pan seared halibut. The different flavours the dishes bring together are unique and layered. They are visually interesting too.

The only downside is that it gets very busy on the weekends and the service can be a bit slow at times. I would recommend going on weekdays/nights if you want a quite conversation. This is a great place to dine with your date too.

Senses is definitely a step up from other restaurants on White Rock's restaurant row. We were impressed by the ambience of the place and the prompt and attentive (but not interventive) attention of our server. The tapas we ordered were imaginatively prepared and presented, flavourful, and fairly priced. A definite "two thumbs up" and, hopefully, its success will bring more interesting fare to the rest of the neighbourhood. Great place to take a date.

Senses has a very modern and sophisticated deco, but too bad, the food was so ordinary. We were disappointed.
There was nothing too bad about any of their dishes, but there was just nothing wow about it either. I will be able to find more tasy and exciting food at the same price or less.

This will definitely not be on my list of "oh, let's hurry back" places any time soon.

Senses delievers with exceptional food, good service and relaxed atmosphere. The choices of food selection in the menu is plentiful, even comparable to what you would find in a Yaletown style Chinese fusion cuisine place. Service as knowledgeable and kind, if you want recommendations they've tried and tasted most of the menu. The environment surely doesn’t feel like a fish and chips environment but of a downtown restaurant in Vancouver. Overall experience another world w/o downtown prices.
