Il Caminetto has been a Whistler favorite since 1981. With a menu offering fine Tuscan cuisine as only Umberto can do it and accompanied by a large selection of international wines with the emphasis on Italian.
Solo dining experience at Il Caminetto last night. Haven't been there in a few years, recent renovations to the lounge look good to me.
Sat at the bar (only one at the bar), promptly set up with everything I'd need for dinner.
Review the wine list (about 15 wines by the glass), and after 6 or 7 seven minutes, make my choice. Oh, sorry., we're out of that. gggrrrrr. Give me a Bailey's instead.
Ordered a simple Gnocci with Sausage. Came quickly and was tasty. Very fresh, adequate portion. My preference (as seen in previous reviews) is to have incredients be large enough I can see what I'm eating, and having larger pieces of Sausage, as opposed to ground Sausage the consistency of ground beef would have been preferred. Good though. Accompanied by good fresh bread, with butter so hard it can't be spread ... why can't restaurants get this right?
The enjoyed a Fladgate 10 year old while listening to the bartender (otherwise a good guy who did a fine job) complaining to the manager about 5 feet away from me about how someone or other is disrespecting him. Hey, I'm CLEARLY within earshot ... sure I'm a solo diner in your lounge, and I'm not going to be spending $250, but c'mon.
Finished with a nice Limoncello, with the manager wandering over to tell me a little more about it then I already knew. Didn't mind that.
Good experience, maybe to a repeat next time I'm up here, but lots of other choices.
Very nice indeed. This restaurant is in my opinion, Umberto's (excuse my lack of a complete name) best offering in Whistler. The decore is upscale, but not over the top or in any way intimidating, as many restaurants can be. The service is top notch. Waiters are knowledgable and timely when they are assisting you. The food is some of the best Italian I have had in a long time. But, more importantly, the food portions are on the hearty side. Im big, big meals are good. I dont know about the wine, I really dont care about it because if the food is good, wine will only hinder it (dont believe me, try it for yourself!).
...you can expect nothing short of decadence in this Whistler restaurant. Lots of variety in terms of tapas and entrées. They have a vast wine selection and their servers are exceptionally knowledgeable about pairings. If you haven't been, you're missing out!
