I came here with a few girls, unfortunately the hostess wasn't very pleasant and looked like she was really forced to be there, but as we got to our table things started looking better. Very nice restaurant, the service was okay nothing special. We ordered some drinks and everyone seemed to be really happy with those. I got the burger with yam fries and it was very very very good !! Definitely happy with my food, the restaurant was a little too busy and loud for my liking but over all a good time!
Have eaten at the Red Lion many times but now they are charging an automatic 15% service charge on your bill. This is what I usually pay anyway however, now they are making it mandatory. You only know of this charge when presented with the bill as it is not written on the menu, advertised anywhere or mentioned by the server. This seems illegal, but I'm not sure. However it is a bad policy that will only infuriate customers as being a gouging unfriendly and untrustworthy policy. I shall not patronize this restaurant again until the policy changes.
Just got back from dinner. The food is decent, although calamari was way overdone (actually tasted like it was reheated). Personally I believe that a restaurant of this class should not let this calamari out of the kitchen and if it wasn't for the waitress who noticed something is wrong and brought back a new dish of this review would be much worst. And that is the only thing I find above average in this place....service. The service was excellent. If you looking for great food ...look somewhere else.
My new favourite for Chinese cuisine, good service great food, big portions, didn't have to wait too long for our food this place rocks! We ordered pork fried rice and Kung pao prawns; fresh vegetables, and big fresh prawns with an amazing sauce definately will order that again. The resteraunt was very clean and it looked like the prices would be higher than they were .
I live a few blocks away and love pho so I thought I'd try this place. Ordered pho tai and was surprised when they said they didn't have any basil, they brought the pho and it was the worst pho I've had I guess they have better other food. But how can a Vietnamese place mess pho up?!?
You cant really screw up fish and chips...so for me i didn't mind the meal, its the service that was atrocious!
Break it down:
took forever to take our drink / food order
water was left empty the whole meal - until asked multiple times to fill it
meal took FOREVER to arrive even though not that busy
waitress never asked how things were going
waitress took forever to clear our dishes
waitress took forever to give us the bill despite our flaggin her down!
wont be back ever..
Cindy's has now changed hands. It is serving evening meals with a Russian twist. Currently that have an excellent value three course menu, from now until xmas. The soup was excellent, the lasagna with salad was very good and the creme brulee was as good as it gets. An added bonus they allow you to bring your own wine with no corkage charge!!! Go and support Patrick, soon I think it will be called Patrick's
Recently my family and I had lunch at The Boathouse Restaurant. Before making a reservation I checked reviews on the DineHere website where I found only one positive comment. I am thankful the other negative reviews did not put me off. We arrived and were greeted with a smile and "(my name)?" The menu was inviting and our choices were attractively prepared and excellent. The attention throughout our meal was thoughtful but not 'pushy'. WHY do people rush to write undeserved - to say nothing of rude - 'brickbats' when 'bouquets' are so much easier to give?
I've been here at least 4 times so far. I've never had a bad experience with a single dish here. There's no menu, it's Ichiban style. Just sit and eat what you are served. This really is the absolute best Japanese restaurant. You should try tuna sashimi, volcano roll, red dragon roll.
Went on a weeknight and it was fully booked. Good thing we had reservations. Small table by the window. Had the Buffalo Mozz salad, a bit small and the tomoatoes were not ripe enough. Tried a taste of the marco polo pasta (chorizo mushsoom) which was very good. Then had the smoked black cod which was very good but the portion was a bit on the small side. Assorted sorbet to end the evening which was very good. Overall food is very good. Service was good given they were very busy. Place is rather small and with large tables, noise can be loud. Pricing is a bit on the high side with pasta just under $20 and mains in the high $20's.
My husband and I went here for my birthday dinner. We used a voucher we had purchased. I used to come to the restaurant years ago when I worked in West Van. The food was amazing and our waitress was super attentive and sweet. We thoroughlly enjoyed our three courses. The flavors were wonderful. Lots of fresh herbs. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The best Indian food we've had in a long time. The restaurant wasn't busy when we were there, which I think will change given the quality of food here. Highly recommend trying them.
Zen is tucked away from the street, and surprisingly large once you walk down teh narrow glassed entry. Quite a large patio off the back, with a nice peakaboo view.
Prices are definitely on the high side, with probably the most expensive chirashi ($30) we've ever encountered. Spicy tuna was excellent. Service and ambience were about average.
Was a decent deal with the Groupon, but I've had great sushi elsewhere for much more reasonable prices.
It was my first visit to Pastameli and I ordered a seafood soup. It was tasty, with lots of fresh ingredients. Service was friendly and not intrusive. Considering they were very busy that evening and there were only two servers, I think the service was good. If I am in that area, I will likely visit and order the cioppino again.
Dining here over the years has been mostly fine. During our latest visit, it wasn't fine, it was memorable. Every dish commanded attention. Chef Jason Harris joined Beachside Forno about a year ago and has succeeded in elevating simple dishes by adding complex finishes.
An example was the chilled fresh pea soup with a small centrepiece: a butter flaked crouton topped with smoked ham and creme fraiche. My entree was poached chicken ballotine, not itself a simple dish but a melange of barely cooked fresh vegetables and light saucing kept it from being decadent. Dining partner, who usiually thinks BBQ should be served to moonshiners, loved the ribs and sides. One was a cauliflower potato salad with creamy dressing with tiny sparks of candied bacon; the other a fresh coleslaw flavoured with fennel seeds.
One of our young guests raved about the Beef Bavette, a full flavoured skirt steak that is under-appreciated because is not readily available. The other enjoyed the Wagyu beef burger even though she had them hold the trim, being the caramelized onions, crisp pancetta and white cheddar. Something about enjoying the meat, I think. I haven't even mentioned the house baked flatbreads, specialties that you will re-order.
With knowledgeable and prompt service, the evening was quite perfect. Excellent entrees, creative desserts, fine coffee and a bottle of Joie Noble Blend, an irresistible mixing of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois and Schoenberger. Finally, a BC wine that is a really fine beverage and a reasonable value.
Me and my coworkers were really excited when this place opened, because the food is really fresh and good, and there are lots of specials so there's always something new to try.
These guys are doing a lot right, but the one thing they need to improve on is to develop a swifter pace on delivery. The location caters to the lunch crowd, and so when food is being picked up on a break, it needs to be made fast. Little things, like cleaning the appliances after serving the customer, not during, would be helpful. Maybe some additional prep can be done before the lunch rush. That might help, too.
This little tweak would make a big difference to the overall experience, but don't let it stop you from trying the place. The staff are really friendly, and you can tell they are trying hard. It's a clean and welcoming environment, and the price point is a bit higher, but so is the quality. My lunch usually comes to around $12 without a drink.
I'm really happy to have a high quality "sandwich shop" in the neighbourhood, and I really do love what they are doing.
Room is attractive and comfortable but food was mediocre and service inadequate. Maybe it's hard to stay interested when serving in a mostly empty room. Maybe the room is mostly empty because the service is disinterested. The restaurant promotes itself as Swiss but the dinner menu does not reflect that in any meaningful way. The choices include numerous pasta dishes and is mostly mainstream fare.
Just really bad experience overall. There were 4 or 5 women at the front, all looking bored and non-friendly..no hi how are you, welcome, nothing.
The waitress looked like she was having a really bad day and not once looked happy smiled or even cared we existed. Food came fast but not cooked properly and I will not go again. They only get customers for the name and view and if you're ok with that, go for it. Don't go if you're looking for a hot fresh meal with a smile. Ugh. So disappointing :-(
I have been going to Trolls for years as my family is always early for ferries, so when me and friends had some time to kill and rumbling tummies, my vote went for Trolls. Both boys disagreed with my but since I'm pregnant, they caved!!!
Troll's has gone so much down hill its not even funny, its a combination of overcooked discussing overpriced food and terrible service. I had chicken strips, who can mess up chicken strips? Well they were not only taking their sweet time cooking the food but they were noticeable overcooked, so when I tried them it was no surprise that they were completely dry and disgusting. Now normally it would have been fine but our server never checked in how our food was. I had to track her down and tell her about our food. She didn't apologize, she just said "I'll get you another one" but in a tone that less than satisfying that I was complaining. I waited forever to get another meal which needless to say was just as unsatisfying as the previous. Our waiter yet again, didn't come to see how I was liking my meal only came when my friends flagged her down. By this time, I had lost my appetite, and didn't want another else. I told her once again about the meal and she just walked away with it and eventually got our bill. I was disappointed to see that I had to pay 100% of my meal... which made me 100% unsatisfied...
In all, service is terrible, I had an empty glass of water the entire time and gross food as did the rest of my party. Luckily for them, we had to leave for the ferry, so didn't have any more time to complain.
When I got home, I told my husband who said; "I could have told you that, I went there not too long ago and it was disgusting"
Needless to say, I will never be going back. I'd rather have ferry food which I might add has gotten way better over these past years. Can't say I didn't warn you!!!
This is the 3rd time we had breakfast at Troll's & every time you can smell the urine that came from the Men's toilet.
This morning the whole restaurant smelt of piss so we had to sit in the outside patio. The female server was exceptionally rude "everyone here is waiting for the ferry" when I simply told her that we have been trying to flag down a server to order our breakfast to no avail after 10 minutes, when they are not even busy this morning.
Food was mediocre except for the hash brown patties. This will be our last visit but Vancouver Coastal Health should be knocking on their door....hopefully before too long..
A lovely brunch! We were wondering around West Van after a walk on the seawall and decided to grab a bite to eat. We were pleasantly surprised by the place we found. The place was cozy, food exceeded our expectations in terms of taste and size and, the wine list had few great options to choose from. (I strongly recommend the salmon eggs Benedict, the best on the North Shore) and service was excellent. It was very fast and super friendly. And if you ask real nice they can do an oversized Belgian waffle in the side instead of a toast. We will definitely go back. Greatly recommended!
