TROLLS Restaurant in Horseshoe Bay has a diverse menu that includes other offerings than the seafood for which it is famous. The Horseshoe Bay location is the original Troll's, opened in 1946 by Joe Troll. His family still runs the place, and it's become legendary among fish and chip connoisseurs.
Surprisingly I have been here more than once & every time I swear never to come back but with a crowd I don't always get to choose!! Troll's has to be one of the most over-rated restaurants in the lower mainland. It's signature fish & chips is okay but over-priced - please don't try anything else on the menu here. Service is poor and ambiance non-existant
Do yourself a favour and walk one block west to YA-YA's Oyster Bar which is infinitely better value
I went with my wife for dinner at Troll's last night again after swearing off of the place last time. The service was AWFUL. Indifferent, slow and distracted leap to mind. A refill on the coffee? After asking twice, I finally got it. Same with my wife's water. 45 minutes to get our order from a server who seemed more concerned with yipping to his co-workers than doing his job is not going to make any fans. The fish and yam fries weren't anything to write home about. The cod was barely warm and for the upcharge for yam fries was insulting considering such a minute portion. The Troll's wrap had less flavour then Elmer's paper glue.The bathroom was lacking sanitation, the carpet was filthy, the piped in muzak was annoying and the only good thing was the view that I never got to see as we were herded to the back.
There's no reason to improve I guess as they seem to have a captive audience. There's also no reason to go back there again as my money can find better value elsewhere.
(Corrected report). Trolls has a great family atmosphere, but not much else to commend it. The quality of the fish and chips is very poor for what is supposed to be a fish and chip restaurant. Fish is small with hard and dark batter, Chips are soggy and mainly little bits. Why can't they buy better quality potatoes?
Other food on the menu is awful. Chicken stir fry - lots of broccoli but no sign of any chicken and it was badly cooked anyway.
Service is a "don't care" attitude.
This place should have so much going for it, but seems to have sat back on its past reputation. It now is fast gaining a bad reputation. Food is bad, service is bad, decor is old fashioned and worn out. If you want good fish and chips in Horseshoe Bay, Ya Yas delivers much better quality and value.
The kitchen staff at Trolls must not care an ounce about the customer.
I have been 3 times in a row and they have got my order wrong ALL 3 TIMES.
There are no apologies. It's like the wait staff doesn't care.
The whole kitchen should be fired for incompetance.
Don't EVER make a special order in this place.
Ordered the one piece halibut and chips and a pop, and a coffee at the end.
The halibut was one long piece, but the batter wasn't crispy. It was a bit soggy actually. Don't know what all the fuss is about with the place. I've even MADE better fish and chips at home.
All in all, it was a $20 lunch for one. Too much for one piece of fish and chips, even if it was halibut.
On a side note, though, I did go there previously to this review and ordered from their take out menu the cod and chips and it was much better. Maybe because they have their own deep fryer and staff just for take out and you know the cook is not busy wasting time and energy on other people's menus. You see him batter it up, dunk it in the hot oil and take it out just for you.
In the sit down restaurant, you never know what is happening behind the kitchen.
With all the negative reviews about Trolls I just had to throw in my bit. We ate there yesterday, Sept 7, 2009 and had a great meal. They told us right at the beginning that the kitchen was quite backed up and that our meal would take at least 30 minutes. I was not timing it as we were in no hurry but it took no where near 30 minutes. The oyster burgers were good and plentiful, the seafood salad was great, the service was very good and the prices fair and reasonable. You people need to give it another shot!!! I will be!
IWe have taken guests there before and everyone thought it was great. This time the food was cold, hugh portion of chips and very small portions of over-battered fish. UInfortunately this will be the last time we eat there. I think the father must have turned it over to the son.I am not sure why it has to be 300 characters - it is very simple the food was not good.
While waiting for the ferry we decided to have an early lunch. Were seated quickly but waited quite a while for service. As in previous visits seems to take about 10 minutes before the waitress comes to the table. The restaurant was about 20% full when we arrived. Ordered Halibut & chips which was quite good but my partner ordered a burger that was horrible. I have never heard of a toasted bun on a hamburger that was served as if toasted, then refrigerated and then taken out f the fridge and served cold with the burger. Every time we have been to this restaurant we get the impression that the sense of urgency is zero. And how many of the patrons are waiting for the ferry and have limited time??
Other times we have been there, the service was equally as slow. The time before, the fries were barely warm.
For a casual family restaurant, I believe that the prices are very high and the value is poor. If the service was better, I may be willing to pay more. Next time in Horseshoe Bay, I likely will not return to eat here.
I remember when Trolls used to be a place of Great Food and Service with a Smile. Now We Find Trolls to be nothing more then a place for young teen employee's with no cares in the world to please a customer. Our Fish and Chips where cold, and the Tar Tar Sauce was warm and had a strange skin on top ( should a dairy based sauce be warm?????) I get that this place is still there because of vacationers and Die Hard Regulars looking for a place to use a coupon, but does that mean it should sacrifice food quality and service standards. I think Trolls needs to go back to Basics and re-think what has been lost.
What a complete disappointment this place was.
Four of us arrive to a restaraunt 1 hr and 45 minutes before our ferry is due to arrive, to a place that is at best 45% full. We are told there was a problem with a deep fryer in the kitchen and that dinner will take 1/2 hour, regardless of what you order. We figure no problem, that leaves us 1 hr and 15 minutes to eat..if the ferry is on time (for a change). The waitress takes our drink and food order and returns 20 minutes later with the drinks (4 diet cokes..I guess they are complicted?) We dont see her again (althought she passed by 5 times) for 45 minutes, at which point she says the kitchen messed up our order because they were 'fooling around' (exact quote!) and it will be out soon. Another 35 minutes goes by and she finally arrives with our food. Four clubhouse sandwiches, 2 with fries, 2 with salad...all wrong! Wrong bread! 2 arrive with coleslaw! One arrives with no side dish at all! We point it out that nothing is right, she says she'll talk to the manager (who turns out to be in the kitchen also 'fooling around' with the cooks (term used loosly). We have now waited 1 hour and 40 minutes for the hard to cook, and rarely ordered 'clubhouse sandwich and fries'! Then the ferry shows up on time. No time to get a correct order. We leave and get a dinner on the ferry. I will never return to this restaurant. if it was not for the fact that people are 'trapped' waiting for the ferry, this place would have gone under years ago I am sure! I'd give it one half a star, only for the location...but the public restrooms across the street have the same location coincidentally! My advice if you travel...bring your own food!

The food was atrocious, no other words to describe it!
The West Coast Benedict was horrible, a hardboiled egg instead of a poached egg, totally tasteless soggy 'sad looking' shrimps, the muffin: it didn't even looked like one, instead of the Hollandaise sauce I think they used some sort of diluted mayonnaise, the best way to express the hash browns: "one year old square moose droppings".
We're told by the kind waitress that 'free range eggs' on the menu would make breakfast too expensive, and that the hot oatmeal on the menu would come out of a small package. (instant, just add hot water)
A quick peek on the way out in the kitchen revealed a young kid as cook with obvious no experience.
Fair is fair, the brown toast was perfectly toasted!
Never ever, back to Troll's again.
It's a 'bus stop shelter' for some ferry passengers, craving for poor quality deep fried junk food.
Sorry folks, I wish it was a different scenario at such great location.

Well, I'm sorry to read some of the negative remarks, at one time this was one of the greatest fish and chip places in the western part of the North American continent! Period!
Good to read a positive comment from some "Brits" as they DO know their "fish and chips!" Troll's was always just a place one went to while waiting for the Nanaimo ferry, it was always a real bonus to find one of Canada's greatest "fish and chip" restaurants there........
Maybe people now just expect a little too much....
What happened to this place?? Used to be a dependable, decent stop for great fish and chips. Nothing fancy, but the fish made up for it. Went there last Sunday, and could not believe it. The place was an absolute pig sty. We were sat right away at a table that had a complete layer of food beneath the table on the floor. Right away we were very turned off, as on closer inspection the booth and chairs were just as filthy, and we're talking french fries and such, so there's no way the staff could miss it. We then asked for a high chair and were given another piece of filthy furniture. Because this has always been a favorite of ours we tried to be positive. When my husband asked for something to clean the highchair with, the person at the bar gave him a wet cloth, like it was perfectly acceptable for the customer to clean his own table and chairs before sitting down. As if this wasn't bad enough, the condiments were all equally coated in food, as well as the cutlery. (You'd think we would have left by now right?) No we decided to trudge through it, and we regretted it. We should have went with our first instinct and left.
So I took my family from burnaby to it on the weekend. We order their 3X sampler platter with salmon, cod and halibut? The food took over 30mins, when it did come all the fish batter were soggy, the server acknowledged. We had order milkshakes, salad and yam fries. All were good, but when the fish came again (another 30 later!!) It was frustrating as it wasn't that busy and how long can it take to fry? we were all full. the fish this time were way over cooked to a deep brown. The fish was dry. We complained to the manager and she say never apologize but instead brushed it off. I had to have a 5 min conversation before she would knock 30% off the bill.
Bottomline, pride has been lost. This was once a great restaurant.
We had a great table with a good view. The service was a little slow at first, but very friendly. The food was terrible. I had the grilled wild salmon (it had no taste and the texture of chum salmon) with an underbaked baked potatoe and broccoli and small corn ears, very microwaved and tasteless. I would not recommend anything other than the fish and chips... if you want something better, go to the Boathouse.
Not a lot will winning a lottery do. You would think that with teh money comeing into this place and the money won from the lotteries that they might put a little more pride into the place. I just didn't feel comfortable in this place. Everything was cheap except for the prices. I guess the owner is too busy spending his lottery winnings on vacations leaving got knows who to run the place, but what does he care about the customer, he's rich and that's all that seems to matter to him. I'll pay a good price for good foor, but wont pay a forture for umm, what is that you just served me anyway? Did I order that? MMM got to love that freezer burn taste
We were travelling from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo via the BC Ferry and had a stop at Horseshoe Bay. What a treat we had. The shops were wonderful to browse in but the best part was getting a table at Trolls for fish and chips. I had heard so much about it and wondered if it could live up to the hype - well the answer for me is a resounding YES. The staff were all super friendly - we had two small children with us who were made to feel right at home with colouring books and crayons. There were fish and chip plates for children which was nice along with a childrens price There were cartoon drawings of all the people who come to Trolls on the walls that the kids loved. Our fish and chips came out perfect - crispy and light not greasy - and the french frys were to die for - I know it said on the menu they use a special kind of potato but whatever it is - it reminded me of the old style chips.
The staff were all "gung ho" and took the time to stop by to talk to the kids and comment on their colouring - they now think they are the new piccasso!
Had a great time, will definetly make the drive again to Trolls even if we are not taking the ferry.
Whilst on holiday in Vancouver (from the UK) over Christmas 2006, myself, husband and 2 kids (aged 10 and 16) were coming back from Whistler one evening and were looking for somewhere to eat. Not knowing the area, we went to Horseshoe Bay and found Trolls. It was busy and so obviously popular, we had a little wait for a table. Thought the atmosphere was great (couldn't mention the view, it was dark outside!). With myself and son being veggies there was something suitable on the menu for all of us. I had the Nachos and I've got to say, they were the best Nachos I've ever had and I've tried Nachos in many many restaurants. As far as I can remember the prices were reasonable (but then being from the UK we found Vancouver good value all round). So as I say, we liked it, liked it a lot.
I'm surprised to see low ratings for this restaurant... I've been going here once or twice a year for about 5 years and I've never had anything other then a good experience... It's not 4* dining but the food has always been solid and worth the drive from Vancouver...
I'm going back today with a family member who's just arrived in town for the xmas season... If it's changed for the worse I'll post another review.
