Three of us hit the Trattoria for our first time around 6 pm on a Friday. Only a few tables were occupied so we were seated promptly. Marble tabletops and red and white checkered dinner napkins are the main decorative nods to an Italian Trattoria. It looked like a good place to hang with a group of friends over drinks after work and small groups drifted in while we ate dinner.
The brief menu focuses on pastas and pizzas with some side and dinner salads/antipasto and breaded veal/chicken dishes. Waiter didn't mention any specials so we chose off the menu. Service was very attentive and the food arrived promptly so full marks for service.
But we were a bit disappointed with the food. My Caesar starter salad was nice, crisp and garlicky so that was a good start. But I was halfway through my linguine carbonara before I realized the bitter aftertaste I was detecting was burnt garlic and not just a sharp cheese. The prosciutto pizza that one tablemate ordered had a lovely slightly charred thin crust but the sauce was pronounced bland and the prosciutto and cheese were just dropped cold on the hot pizza . A minute back in the pizza oven would have warmed and crisped up the prosciutto and melted the mozza. The spaghetti and signature meatballs that our other tablemate had was well executed but the marinara sauce was also quite bland, likely the same sauce used on the pizza. We're used to more kick in our Italian food so that was a little disappointing.
Three entrees, a Caesar salad and an iced tea came to $82 with tip so the value without alcohol is decent.
The table was dirty. The cutlery was dirty. The smoked salmon eggs benedict was delivered cold to my table.
When I complained about the dirty table, the young hostess dabbed at it as if she might hurt it.
When I complained the cutlery was dirty, specifically the fork. Only the fork was taken away to be replaced.
When I complained, after my smoked salmon eggs benedict arrived cold, that there was no salt and pepper at the table, the waiter came back with some pepper only. Then I had to ask him about the salt. He ran off to look for some salt. This poor, amateur service was the worst I've experienced in a long time.
When I complained that my meal was delivered cold, I didn't have to pay for it.
Did I miss that it was Amateur Employee Day at the Trattoria?
Around two hours later, I discovered that I had to run to the toilet. I kept running to a toilet for the next 9 hours!
The food tasted great.
