The location is the old Steamworks Restaurant and the Cactus Club Chain has taken it over.
I love the Taphouse for the great beer selection, and awesome menu. The food choices are great, the Nachos outstanding and the Clubhouse is one of my favorite (I'm addicted to the orange-cranberry mayo)
However, on my most recent visit my favorite dish (the Clubhouse) had been reduced to a platter sized plate, the portion of fries cut in half and the lettuce replacing the turkey and bacon to a rediculous degree. I was unimpressed, further compounded by the incompitence of the waitress and the soggy cold fries. The prices didn't change, and unlike usual I left still hungry and just as out of pocket as usual (the price did not decrease with the smaller, less attractive portion)
I've sent many friends here to try the menu and beer, but I won't be recommending anyone any longer. That last visit was depression....
Nice new image for the Cactus Club..who took over the old Steam Works restaurant (The Lighthouse) in the New Village in Park Royal.
Different ambiance...we sat in the lounge and even though the games were on the wide screens and many of them - it did not interfere like a lot of sports bars...there were billiards but in the back section and also there but separate...great bar
FRIENDLY and very attentive staff....great furnishings - lots of plush leather...A very polished, but down to earth GM
Best Yam Fries EVER!! Great tasting and plentiful salads and the wonton soup and seafood chowder.... Yummy
I will go back there for sure this is a 5 star
We had lunch at the Taphouse for the first time. Enjoyed the ambience of the place, really liked the menu - lots of interesting choices, and a very nice selection of beers and wine. The service was very attentive.
Despite the interesting menu, we played it conservative with the beef dip and burger. The beef dip was very good. We both had fresh and tasty side salads. The burger was huge and was good, but I found it overly spiced (though I am hyper-sensitive to spicy food).
When the server noticed that I had only eaten about 1/3 of my burger she asked if everything was okay. I explained that it was too spicy for me, but that I was extremely sensitive, so it was not a problem. And I told her the salad was excellent. She clearly felt bad and offered to bring me something else, which I declined.
When we received the bill, they had deducted the cost of the burger. I mentioned that this was not necessary, but appreciated. This is a great example of customer service that motivated this writer to do his first review. We will definitely be returning.
Dined here a few weeks ago with friends, just after the restaurant finished their renovations and re-opened.
The service was downright sloppy. Our server was not informed about the menu and ignored our table for extended periods of time; we kept having to flag him down. He forgot to bring basic items to the table -- cutlery, water. We ended up waiting one hour for our appetizer - a simple meat and cheese platter - which he had forgotten to ring in. By the end of the night, one of the managers was serving our table.
The food (novel conceptions by the new menu) was bland and extremely overpriced; definitely no value for the money we were paying. The bread was stale, the salads were wilted, and the sauce on the entrees was watery.
The only thing the restaurant had going for it was its ambiance which was rustic and relaxing, reminiscent of a ski lodge. In light of our terrible dining experience, the management was also very accommodating. I understand that this new Taphouse is going for a pub feel; in that case, stick to treating this place as a bar and don't visit if you want a restaurant experience.
It is so nice to see that the Cactus Club has taken over and left its mark on this restaurant. It is usually subdued without the blaring music and the noise that is associated with trendy restaurants. Service is a bit patchy although everyone, from the time you set foot in the door, is very upbeat and friendly. Table service can be slow.
Menu choices are good and the quality and presentation are at Cactus Club standard.
We prefer The Tap House to Cactus Club as it has all the quality of Cactus Club but is a quieter place to visit with friends.
