Saltaire is a decidely west coast space with a beautiful view of Stanley Park and Howe Sound and a menu to match.
I was doing my errands, when I started to get hungry and stop at Saltaire for lunch.
I was greeted by my friendly server, she was polite, knowledgeable and was helpful with the menu. All throughout my lunch, my server kept checking on my meal, and was very attentive.
I decided to order the black tiger prawns fettuccini provencal - fresh tomato, garlic, basil, white wine, butter. My server was right, it was filling, with amazing taste and lots of prawns, they didn't skimp with this meal. At first I thought I could the entire dish, but I had enough to bring to work for another meal, and it was delicious.
I got to enjoy my lunch beside the large window, facing the water, and its a nice place during the day, and ideal for dates with the view. I liked the cozy and relaxed style to this place.
I recommend this place for special occassions, or to enjoy a great meal.
Ambiance: The interior was nicely decorated and the view is fantastic, especially if you're sitting at a window seat. The upper patio looked like a nice place to relax from the outside.
Service: There wasn't anyone to greet us when we arrived on the 2nd floor, we waited about 1-2 minutes before a waiter came to seat us and give us menus. The service started out to be not bad, but after our order was taken, our waiter disappeared until we asked for the bill. The person that brought us our food wasn't even the same person, and there were only 5 other tables on our level. Nobody came by to ask us how the food was or ask if we needed anything like water, etc. The other table seemed like they had better service though, I noticed their waiter (same guy that sat us) re-filled their water without being asked, was attentive and was generally pretty nice.
Food: The food was decent, my wife ordered the black tiger prawn fettuccini ($18), pasta cooked just right, al dente. 8 prawns. flavors were nicely infused, maybe a tad too much black pepper. I ordered the black angus sirloin steak sandwich ($18) with a side of yam fries and a side caesar for an extra $2. I enjoyed the caesar better than my main dish. I asked for medium rare on the steak, but it came out well done. I was expecting a bigger portion on the sandwich.. 3 slices of tomato on the side seasoned with pepper were a nice touch. Yam fries were not oily or seemed to be re-fried.
Value: We felt the value was just okay. I guess we're paying a bit extra for the nice ambiance, like the view. I think a steak sandwich at another place would have tasted better and have had more value. The pasta was a generous portion.
Overall: We won't be back, but it's nice if you haven't been. Go during a sunny day if you have free time and aren't in a rush for service.
We had a beautiful table on the patio on a wonderfully sunny afternoon. He had a burger w/ yam fries and I had an egg dish with salad. The burger was good. Nice patty and fixings. The yam fries though, wow! DO NOT have the yam fries. They were soggy, greasy and re-fried way too many times. We asked for more ketchup but it never came (we only got about a spoonfuls worth the first time around). There was way too much dressing on the salad and the lemonade is dreadful!
I was happy with the decor and the view. Service was nice. We ordered a simple green salad and pizza. The pizza had a thin crust but it's not like on the eastcoast. It was actually too crunchy and didn't taste like a crust; more like pizza toppings on a cracker or the like (use your imagination). The salad was nice but a little overdressed. Prices are good.
Went here for dinner last night. We decided to go tapas style. The food was ok, but nothing special. It was a decent room, quite nice, well designed. I didnt care for the cheap looking pictures on the wall, but I think they're from a art student, guess to save money.
The big issue though is the service. The waiter was insanely rude. When we indicated that we wanted to do tapas style, he made no effort to help us. When he delivered the first round he put them down infront of the person who ordered the item, rather than in the centre of the table. We had to clear the clutter from the table ourselves and move things around. He kept coming back and trying to take our order for our mains, and we kept explaining we want to do tapas style, and we ordered a couple more items.
I could keep going on, but add to say he snapped a couple of us several times, and pushed us to hurry up, obviously trying to go home. Service like this is unacceptable, and should never be tipped. Bad servers need to make bad money, so they get out of the business because they dont make any money.
Several of us dined here this week. We've eaten here before, but only for lunch in the summer and on the patio. We started with an appetizer of calamari 2 ways. It was fine, but nothing special. For mains, one of had the salmon....it was overcooked. Another had cioppino and found it satisfactory. Another had steak with macaroni and cheese (odd combo). She found the mac and cheese to be quite dried out. I had "seafood puttanesca". I expected it to be in a traditional spicy red sauce....not so! It was basically a butter sauce. All of my seafood was very overcooked and rubbery. The prawns even smelled a bit off. We were asked if we wanted bread, but were surprised that we were charged for it. All in all, we found it to be quite pricey and quite disappointing. We won't be back.
The patio here is a delightful spot for lunch on a warm sunny day. The absence of reviews suggests that the cognoscenti want to keep it that way but it could easily be busier so I'll share with you, but only tell your best friends!
We tried Saltaire yesterday, when we were in West Van for business. The location is great, the view is fantastic and the decor is well done.
The food and the service are what matters, however, and they were mediocre. The salad was freezing cold, bland and uninspired. The pizza was okay, but sounded much better on the menu than it tasted. The soup was passable. Our server took a while to take our orders, forgot to tell us about the daily specials, and took even longer to bring the food.
I've had much better food and much better service at Earl's and Milestones (not that I consider Earl's and Milestones benchmarks for food and service — it's just that they provide a useful comparison).
I quite like the ambiance of the restaurant -- nice fireplace and bar, tables well positioned. On our last visit on a sunny evening we sat on the upstairs deck. I felt sorry for the servers (who complained to each other) about the hike from the kitchen to the deck. Food was fair but not particularly good value. Views were terrific as we watched the cruise ships navigating under the Lions Gate bridge. Nothing exceptional from the kitchen this evening and a rather weak wine pairing. Risky choice if you are looking for that special evening. We have had better meals in the past so I won't give up. But there is lots of competition in Ambleside, Dundarave and Park Royal.
We went on a double date. This is definitely a romantic date place wih stunning view!!
Food is alright.. Our favourite appy is "Yam Fries". Not a bad contender of the yam fries at Hamilton Street Grill in Yaletown.
On a recent Saturday evening we were taken to Saltaire by another couple. I am sure that during daylight hours, especially in summer, the view of, and over, the water from the restaurant and the deck is quite pleasant. In winter, at night, all focus is inward. That said, the restaurant was quite cozy, nice fireplace and open bar, but definitely for a casual dining experience.
Service was slow and not really friendly. Bread is not brought to the table automatically, but there is a bread appetizer on the menu which our table ordered. It took about 10 to 15 minutes for the bread to arrive. How difficult can it be to throw some bread in a basket? As the restaurant was only half-full, it was not like staff were rushed off their feet.
The main courses (we did not order appetizers other than the bread) were solid but not out of this world. I ordered the pork tenderloin with bok choy and liked the contrast of the sweet and bitter, but was unsure as to the purpose of the "potato chips" that were sprinkled on top of the entire dish. One dining campion enjoyed the pork chop that he had ordered.
Deserts were huge (we were glad we hadn't ordered appetizers) and were actually quite good.
Overall, an acceptable casual dining venue. I would like to try it again in the summer.
We Came in for Dinner with Family for my Daughters Birthday. The food was wonderful ( Mouth watering Curry ), the service outstanding; our waiter Kevin was a Hoot. and the Patio they have is amazing. My Daughter was very happy and so where we. Yum Yum, we will be back many more times. Thank You Very Much.
and while the food was excellent, the several hours it took to get to us was not. I know there was a big party nearby and there were only two of us, but you did take our reservation! The location is lovely and the menu options solid if not particularly innovative. I'll give the restaurant another try but there are lots of other good options to visit before then.
I went to Saltaire years ago and was not impressed, but now a few years latter and an invite from my girlfriends I went back. WOW has it gotten better. I'm guessing a new management team or something. The food was tasty, good portions, and fair priced. The Waiter was great and entertaining. The Patio is one of the best and great for viewing the Cruise ships going out. I am so happy this placed turned around, you can tell hard work was done. We will all be back. Thank you :)
just had dinner here on may 30th nice decor, excellent patio,I had the pork which was fantastic,my wife had the bruschetta(very original)and the salmon which was cooked perfectly.the service was very good and I can't think of a better place to watch the sun set and enjoy a martini or two. We'll be back for certain and will be bringing friends
We went to this restaurant once before and thought it was rather good. So we took my parents there on Mother's Day for a nice brunch -- or so we thought. The table was very nice, with an excellent view, and the look of the place is very strong. For ambience, they've done a good job. However, the menu on Mother's Day was nothing short of a joke. The only main courses available were 4 versions of eggs benedict, an omelette, and a frittata. It was like that episode of Fawlty Towers where they could only serve duck for dinner except here it was eggs. We asked if they could at least make french toast for our 3 year-old but were told 'no', the chef can only prepare the special menu items. (There were lots of toddlers in the restaurant and absolutely nothing on the menu a toddler would want to eat - and this is on Mother's Day; what were they thinking?) And it's not like we were asking the chef to prepare foix gras from scratch, it's just french toast - any idiot can make it; why can't their chef? (Maybe he's just a special 'egg chef'). It seemed to us that the entire menu was designed to make it easy on the chef at the expense (literally) of the diners' enjoyment - this was our number one complaint. It was assembly line cooking. The salads were soggy, and the actual eggs benedict we were forced to eat was poor: the english muffin was ice cold and hard as a rock, the eggs were dreadfully undercooked. Our server was decent enough but the wait for our various courses was too long, especially when the food tasted like it was made the day before. For the money paid, this was a disappointing meal, and we deeply regretted having chose it. We will not return.
Last Friday I went to Saltaire for appetizers and drinks with a couple of friends. I haven't been there for a while, and the first thing I noticed was the change on the menu. It was a good surprise and I must say the appies were delicious. We had a bottle of red wine and one of my friends had a couple of Martinis that were pretty good. The waitress was friendly although she was quite new so wasn't too knowledgeable on the wines. The chili garlic prawns were really good as well. The only thing I didn't quite enjoy was the Food channel on the TV....a personal thing though...
WE ARE 8 LOVELY LADIES WHO EACH MONTH PICK A RESTAURANT AND GO TO LUNCH. FRIDAY WE CHOSE SALTAIRE.AND WERE VERY HAPPY WITH THIS LUNC H.1 OF THE LADIES HAD THE FRENCH ONION SOUP AND THE REST OF US DROOLED. SHE SAID ITWAS 1 OF THE BEST SHE HAS HAS. WE ALL ORDERD SOMETHING THAT THE REST HAD NOT. EACH WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THERE CHOISE. THE SERVICE WAS OUTSTANDING AND THE PRICES VERY GOOD FOR LUNCH. I CAN TELL YOU THE SPECIAL SOUP AND SANDWICH SPECIAL CHANGES EVERY DAY AND IS GREAT. THE VIEW IS VERY VERY GOOD EVEN IN WINTER. PLEASE TRY [ OLD GIRLS OUT TO LUNCH]
Having eaten numerous meals at Saltaire over the past 2 years, I am confident in saying that it will exceed your expectations. The menu is creative without being pretentious, leaving you wishing you could have tried more dishes. I highly recommend the tasting menu if you can coordinate that with the chef. There's nothing for fun than dining with a group of family and friends while dish after dish arrive in front of you. No thinking, just eating and enjoying (and anticipating the next course!).
If you are looking to show off our beautiful city to guests, Saltaire is the place. Comfy and cozy during the winter, and vibrantly sunny during the summer. Walk in straight off the seawall or dress up for an evening out!
The resaturant I visited yesterday, Saltaire, is a beautiful restaurant with a lovely ambiance and a million dollar view. The food is great and has amazing presentation. Hats off to the chef. employees seem to enjoy their place of work and it shows.
Only thing that needs fixing is the attire. As much as holiday spirit is nice; loud, tacky jewelry is simply unprofessional and deterring from the otherwise serene atmosphere.
