Too much upsell
By Kujibo of West Vancouver (127 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 3:46pm [Dine in]

Finally got around to trying this place. Out front on the way in we noticed lunch specials for $6.95. Thought can't go wrong there.

When seated and looking at the menus the lunch special was now $8.50. Ok, whatever. Order drinks and we are convinced by server to try some of their special drinks. Order food, and server thinks it is strange we only order one of their appetizers and suggests we order more. At this point I'm getting a bit irritated with the upsell. I can hear her upselling everyone else too. She seemed very nice but it also seemed like she had $$ signs in her eyes and that was a bit offputting. The $6.95 lunch advertised outside could have been an honest mistake but given the upsell pattern I was noticing I doubt it, and quite frankly if intentional disgusts me. Also took way too long to get the bill, and there were some other missteps, so I have to give a 2 for service even though otherwise she was nice. I read the north shore news review that service was overbearing and I can see what they mean.

Food was decent enough, though didn't completely blow me away. Only had one visit so its a bit hard to tell. I'll give the benefit of the doubt here as I was a bit harsh with service.

Anyway I won't be repeating here unless I'm in the area and really feel like Thai.

Big Disappointment

Submitted Friday, December 12, 2014 - 10:57am [Dine in]

As the restaurant opened at 11:00am we arrived at 11:55. The owner (Rose, we were told) had still not shown up and there were people waiting. They said she was on her way. It was pouring rain. Ten minutes later she arrived without the keys. Did I mention it was pouring rain? Another 10 minutes go by and the cook shows up with the keys. My friend had an Entertainment Book coupon which Rose would not honour. It was for dinner not lunch - our mistake. Things are not improving. Saying the food was mediocre is a bit of a stretch as the Pad Thai was stodgy (and $10.00!!). The soup was not heated through. The salad looked sad - I didn't eat it. My friend ordered the Red Curry. It was yellow. The appetizer was $4.99 for two spring rolls - they were the smallest spring rolls I had seen. When we went to pay she mentioned the coupon and we thought she was going to honor it as we certainly had to wait for her. Instead, she said, "Your coupon was probably expired anyways." It didn't expire until Dec. 31, 2014 as we told her. Unbelievable!! Will NOT be going back.

Nothing special
By 778guy of Vancouver (18 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, August 25, 2008 - 4:11pm [Dine in]

First off I totally agree with the review below regarding too much up sell. I had heard great things about Rose Thai so we decided to try it out for lunch today. The place very clean and well decorated inside however once we were given the menus they were quite tatty/beaten up and had many of the prices covered with white out and sloppily written in over top (like the kind of menus you find in cheap east van feed bag restaurants). I realize that this is a minor detail but it was quite a stark contrast to the otherwise well kept premises, also it just looks terrible to see that the prices have been raised right in front of you!

Anyway we decided to order from the lunch special section (which was NOT priced as advertised). The specials come with soup a spring roll, salad and a main dish which is a decent deal for under $10 in west van.

The soup was so so, it looked and tasted somewhat like thin and watery Chinese hot and sour but with about a quarter of the ingredients. The spring rolls were quite good but its pretty rare to find a place that does a bad spring roll, salad was nothing special. The mains were good but not great, I had a green chicken curry with seasonal vegetables and my friend had beef with red curry. One thing I really disliked about my dish was the fact that it contained green peas, (like the frozen kind with the big green giant on the bag) peas like these are never found in authentic Thai dishes and the only places I have run into them are at cheap fusion Esq spots like the Thai House in North Van, no good! to be honest the food was decent (except for the nasty peas) and other dishes served smelled and looked great.

My major beef with Rose Thai was our server (she is pictured in the review posted in the North Shore News review on the table in the front of the restaurant, possibly the owner?) despite us being one of only 3 tables in the place she was rushing around like there was a fire, when we tried to ask a couple of basic questions about the menu she gave unhelpful one or two word answers before scuttling off, the whole experience felt rushed and at the end she got upset with us for asking for our simple orders to be separated! I understand how busy and crazy working in a restaurant can be during a lunch or dinner rush but this was in no way the case, all the frantic running around in her high heels just seemed uncalled for and erratic, it certainly did not even translate into faster service.

I might go back at some time to try a couple of the other dishes I liked the look of but it wont be high on the list. I would imagine that Rose Thai will do well with the faux connaisseur crowd who are abundant in West Van but not so much with people who really know and enjoy great Thai cuisine. As an alternative I would suggest Krua Thai on lonsdale, the place is not quite as flashy or large inside but the food is genuine and service is always great. Enjoy.

Hope it lasts

We had an excellent meal last Friday to start a weekend of Asian dining in Vancouver. The fragrant jasmine tea to start was quite unique to me. Served in a clear teapot, it is quite photo worthy - and tasty.

We had stuffed chicken wings to start. They were some of the tastiest we've tried. Then on to garlic thai pork, egg noodle pad thai and mixed veggies in green curry sauce. The garlic pork was a little light on the pork but way heavy on the garlic. If you're a garlic lover try this dish. I love egg noodle pad thai - they serve it at Thai House and that's the only reason I go there once in awhile. No need to any more as Rose Thai makes an excellent version.

The owners have done a nice job of converting this former Greek restaurant and the ambiance is white table cloth but still informal. Service was prompt and courteous. Prices may be slighly more than some other Thai places but Rose Thai is definitely worth checking out.

For a Friday night the restaurant wasn't too busy - five of about a dozen or so tables occupied at 7:30. Like I said in my title, I hope there's room for two Thai places on this stretch of Marine Drive and I hope it lasts.

Terrible customer service

Submitted Monday, May 9, 2011 - 9:52am [Take-out]

Placed takeout order from here. Specifically asked for one of the dishes VERY MILD as I explained it was for my preschool age child. We picked up our order. PROBLEM #1: Missing dish. PROBLEM #2: Dish that was supposed to be very mild was spicy. PROBLEM #3: When I called the restaurant to report the missing dish and the dish with incorrect spicy level, I was treated very poorly! The person argued with me about the dish stating "what's mild to me may be spicy to you". Aren't I the customer?!!! Isn't what I think the most important!! Refused to redo dish for my son even though had initially offered to deliver the missing dish. PROBLEM #4: Called us back to state that the person who packed up our food was certain that missing dish had been packed. So basically accusing me of lying!!! I stated I'd checked and rechecked the bags several times but the dish wasn't there! PROBLEM #5: The person then went on and on about how busy they were and that I wouldn't get my missing dish until very late. So I guess I as a customer don't matter! I can put up with a lot in a restaurant if the food is great. However, there food is just okay so I'm not going to put up with being treated so terribly for mediocre food. You may order here and things be fine if they happen to get your order exactly as you requested. However, if they make a mistake or get something wrong, be prepared for them to care more about themselves than you as the customer! Not worth eating here in my books.

Great place for lunch

Five of us had lunch here this week. Great deal...about 30 choices on the menu (chicken, pork, beef, noodles) all for $6.95. For that you get a small bowl of soup, main course, salad and spring roll. I think that the waiter didn't speak much English so the service was a bit lacking. But altogether a great deal. Nicely decorated and clean washrooms.

I've been to Rose Thai about several times now? The food is great, the service is outstanding, the ambiance is so comfortable and relaxing, and the price is so reasonable.
I honestly think their Pad Thai is the best, every good Thai restaurant should have amazing Pad Thai and only Rose Thai can pull that off.
The yellow curry crab is probably the meaning of life. Really, the crab is amazing, I beg you to try it.
The washrooms are amazingly clean and all the tables have elegant white table cloths, enough said, the place is a m a z i n g.
Service is just exceptional, ask for water, they'll give you it, they'll even come to you before you raise your hand. It all works so perfectly I can't say any more.
Come to Rose Thai I swear you won't regret it.

The best Thai food to date!

Rose Thai was a restaurant that I had never felt particularly inclined to go into as I am not very into fancy dining, however after the Taste of Ambleside fair I changed my mind completely. They were definitely the most interesting restaurant participating, with the most selection and the friendliest staff.
We were greeted on their patio by the owners daughter, who was very quick and cute as she stamped our tickets. The other two waitresses were very friendly as they served our samples, which included Pad Thai, Tom Yum Soup, Wonton Soup, Satay, Rice, Curry and a neat Thai Pancake. . We tried all the selections and enjoyed them all immensely, especially the curry and the soup. It was a very relaxed atmosphere to sit on the patio and enjoy our samples, something that you couldn't do at all the restaurants participating.
Because of this lovely experience, we decided to go back tonight to try some of their other selections. After enjoying the Tom Yum again, we tried the Ostrich with Mango, Curry Crab and Green Beans with Prawns. The food was some of the best Thai food that I have ever experienced by far. You can tell that the chef has had many years of experience. The fact that there is no MSG is also a great plus for this amazing experience. The restaurant was very cozy and friendly, not too fancy but just nice enough. The owner chatted with us and the other servers were very efficient and cheerful. Overall I thought it was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend going for a nice evening out!

The restaurant is situated in a nice part of West Van, along Marine Drive. Parking is ample and convenient. Restaurant is clean and orderly. It's a nice little restaurant with a warm atmosphere, but where is the live jazz that other people have mentioned in dinehere. It would be nice to see more live jazz ... each time I visited Rose Thai, I was hoping I would catch some live music, but each time, I'm disappointed because there was no music.

It's a good thing when we can bring different cultures together where live music can help to bridge the gap between the east & the west. Look forward to some live music soon! Keep it up - the restaurant has a lot of potential.

I was off work on Remembrance Day (November 11, 2009) so I went for a brisk walk in Ambleside Park. Afterwards I wandered onto Marine Drive and discovered Rose Thai Restaurant.

It was about 11:30 and happily enough the restaurant was open for business. I met the proprietor (Rosemary) and her lovely daughter Michelle. I ordered the green vegetarian curry dish for lunch and it came quickly. Michelle told me that the cook is a professional chef with a great deal of cooking experience in other Lower Mainland reataurants.Rosemary and Michelle were delightful to talk to.

The food was as good or better than any Thai food I have eaten in Vancouver and I have lived in Vancouver since 1975. And the menu prices at this restaurant are extremely reasonable.

The layout and decor of the restaurant is quite nice and overall it seemed to be extremely clean. The restaurant did get quite busy after 12:30 but mind you it was a major holiday and it didn't seem to affect the excellent service.

I noticed that Rose Thai Restaurant also had a fairly comprehensive dessert menu and an excellent tea selection. I had Green Tea ice cream and a pot of green tea to go with it.

I plan to go back again soon and I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to family and friends. My dining experience at Rose Thai Restaurant was incredible.

Pathetic Service, not good value for food served

visited restaurant with some friends for dinner recently as we wanted some good authentic thai food. the restaurant's ambiance was quite nice, with cozy settings. restaurant was quite empty when we visited with just another table occupied and we were greeted by a gentleman, perhaps the owner
2 of the appetizers on the menu which we had wanted were not available while a number of other items had stickers placed on them(meaning not available) or on the price(meaning priced changed) menu selection was inadequate
greatest dissatisfaction was the attitude of the lady server who had an attitude problem -haughty and not helpful when asked about items on the menu. she gave short, crisp replies without bothering to explain questions on dishes which we were not clear
food was just about alright but not impressive at all, but value for money was poor as prices were steep for the quality of food served
unlikely to revisit this restaurant again anytime soon

I visited Rose Thai on a number of occasions in the past two years, and I have enjoyed my visits there (everytime)! Let’s face it. All restaurants have their good days and bad, but overall, the owner of the restaurant really cares about the business and its patrons. The restaurant is celebrating their third anniversary this year. The owner has created a very nice décor for the restaurant … a warm, elegant and romantic restaurant. In my many years of dining out at Thai restaurants, the prices at Rose Thai are reasonable, lots of selection on the menu, and a very good wine bar. The food is prepared by a chef who has had over 20 years of Thai food preparation experience. The restaurant is also quite clean & tidy. They also have a nice patio outside … nice to sit out there when it’s not raining. It’s a nice place to hang out in West Van and it’s close by Ambleside, which is a short walk to the beach, the Art Gallery, Silk Purse and the Harmony Arts Festival. Not bad at all for a taste of Thai food, with a nice décor and live music too!

The worse dining experience I ever had!

We went there for dinner tonight! It is a horriable experience.
First, the food doesn't taste good, and the food is not clean at all, we found a lot of sands in clams and the steam fish (No. 52 C on the menu) hasn't been clean ( they didn't get the dirty stomach out and gills still in the head). We asked the owner why and she said the kitchen forgot because they were too busy and then she left. (She did appologied but she still charge us even takes 15% off this dish price).
Second, the service is not good at all. We invited one friend has dinner with us. He said hi to the owner before we get in to restaurant and she just skip it. (No feed back)
Once we in the restaurant, she wasn't very happy that we just order soft drinks not wine or beer. Our friend order first ( No.52 A on the menu) but they forgot his order until we ask they (that is almost one hour later). The food wasn't good too our friend just had a bit and totally skip it. No one come and ask us how was the food during the dining. No one come anf fill up our water cup. Give us the wrong food (we don't at the begining) and they still charge us.
Third, the price wasn't good according to their food and service. they charge for hot water with a slice of lemon (first time of my dining experience). They charge $1.99 for a small bowl of rice and that is not even coconut milk rice (just plain rice)

After the we had the food, two of us are feeling tommy ache (not sure the reason yet).

We will not go there again. We will not recommond anyone to go there too.

My experience with Rose Thai is complicated!!! I have eaten at this restaurant several times, and for whatever reason continue to go, why? THE FOOD IS AMAZING!!! Yes I agree with the previous reviews in some respects, yes the owner at times can be a little overbearing, and yes sometimes the bill takes a while, but all in all, it's a great restaurant. All good things take time, and from what I have seen this restaurant makes improvements all the time. Keep up the good work!!

Best Thai Restaurant in Vancouver.

Submitted Tuesday, April 30, 2013 - 5:51pm [Dine in]

I had an amazing experience at Rose Thai. The food was simply delicious and the service was exceptional. Love it. Love it. Love it. I had been to so many Thai restaurants and found that Rose Thai stood out the best. My sister and I went to Rose Thai on a quite slow day, we didn't want to come in because we thought that since it was so slow, the service would be very grumpy. But, the pictures on the window made our mouths water from how good it looked. So we entered in. A nice lady greeted us as we entered in and led us to out table. She first started asking if we would like a drink, how caring that is! Usually, some restaurants just lead us to our table with the menu and forget about us, not Rose Thai! We said we would like ''water, thank you'' but when we saw the tea on another table, we got tempted so we went with tea. So refreshing, so relaxing like a day at the spa! This restaurant completely made my day. The menu was enormous and was hardcover with lovely, clear, pictures with (yummy!!!) tasty looking food. We ordered the Tom Yum Soup, Green Beans, Pad Thai, and Red Curry to start with (all reasonable prices!). When the food arrived, its aroma filled the room and we were satisfied, we couldn't believe how good it tasted and smelled! The Tom Yum Soup was exceptionally well, its hot and sourness was just perfect with a hint of lemongrass. The Green Beans, were very well cooked as well, I could tell the sauce was a secret weapon to make the dish complete. The Pad Thai was a favourite (according to the lady) and we thoroughly enjoyed it as well (became one of my favourites too!) Last, came the Red Curry which was delicious. It was just perfect for my sister and I because we don't eat too spicy foods, the chicken was very tender and super well cooked. (I rate it 5 stars!) Overall, the price wasn't expensive at all for such good food! Amazing food, pardon me. Simply wonderful. When we were about to go, the nice lady offered us some coconut candy! My sister said '' no thank you.'' But I took some just for the sake of politeness, I tasted it and then it just devoured into my mouth, great, now I'm addicted to coconut candy as well. Anyways, after I left I just kept thinking how amazing the experience was. I will be back soon, Rose Thai! I strongly and highly recommend Rose Thai as your typical everyday fine dining. If you have not tried Rose Thai, go now! Or you will be missing out on some good stuff.

This restaurant should be closed, permanently.

We arrived on what should have been a busy night for the Rose Thai Restaurant West Vancouver, but the place was almost empty. This was a Sign from above to go somewhere else, but no, we had to walk in…..

The waitress, who I'm guessing is the owner seems to be in a horrible mood, but managed to take time out of her schedule of doing to find us a table.
Once seated, we asked for water and she asked us if we want tea as well. Thinking it was complimentary, because of the way she asked us; we said yeas and thank you; but at the end of the night she charged up 10.50 for a pot of tea.

The Rose Thai menu we were handed was the size to a hard covered novel and featured page after page of blurry food photos accompanied by an extremely pricey and complicated menu to read, let alone hold.

We ordered soup to start for 13.95. The owner said that the soup would not be enough for four of us, but if we ordered another portion for 6.00, she would make it a really big bowl. We said yes….. The soup arrived, the waiter said for us to make room on the table as this was really Big-Soup and it will take up a Really Big space! Once he lifted up the lid, we could see that the "really Big" was actually referring to the bowl that the soup was in and in fact, not the soup itself. He then served the soup (19.95) and all we ended up getting one medium size shrimp (No pealed), a teas spoon of "Safeway Style" vegetables in a cup of chilly infused tap water!

Halfway through our soup experience, the owner came running back to our table to say that we had made a mistake on our main dish food orders as we had ordered 2 different chicken dishes. We confirmed that we actually like chicken and that the order was correct the first time.

Next came the 4 small side bowls of rice. The waiter introduced it to our table as "Here's your Uncle Ben's Rice" This was really not that funny as we actually went to the Rose Thai Restaurant for an authentic experience. To top it off, the restaurant charged us 5.00 for each bowl of rice, a price that would make Uncle Ben cry….

Since there was no one else in the Rose Thai Restaurant in North Vancouver, our main dishes arrived really fast, So fast that maybe the food fell out of the bowls on the way to the table, because the portions were extremely small. Example: Our chicken dish in coconut curry had about 1/2 cup of vegetables, 1/2 cup of shredded chicken with 1 can of coconut milk for 14.95 and with was supposed to feed a table of four.

Five minutes later, we had finished the three dishes (No surprise given their size) and rice and asked for the 2 separate bills. We then presented the owner with two Rose Thai Restaurant coupons from The Vancouver Entertainment Book. The owned then informed us that we could once use one coupon (9.00 value) per table. We questioned her because no where on the coupon did it say anything about one coupon per table and the rules with using the Vancouver Entertainment Book are only one coupon per bill. The owner went on to say that she agreed with us but said that she changed her policy on the entertainment book coupons after the book was printed and came out. She said that it is the customers fault and therefore the customer must pay.

In conclusion, the Rose Thai Restaurant in West Vancouver was a complete rip-off, with extremely small portions being served. This restaurant cares more about how they look than how they cook. They charged for rice and soup that other Thai restaurants in Vancouver would include with the meal and the complimentary tea was 10.50. Very misleading, very un-Vancouver like.

We were very disappointed the Rose Thai Restaurant will probably end up in the restaurant obituary section of your local newspaper soon enough.

Thanks for heartburn!

One of the Best Restaurant in Vancouver

A friend of mine highly recommended me about this restaurant coz she said the food was awesome. So last Saturday I decided to go with my boyfriend. Before I went over there, I was looking on the internet about this restaurant. ( I always check the reviews of restaurant before I go). I didn't wanna go after I read couple of common, However, my friend said it is really good and I should get a try. So I did. I didn't regret going there coz it wasnt like what people said.
My boyfriend and I went there around 7:30pm. The restaurant wasn't too big, about 8-10 tables, but already 4 tables occuppied. Servers were very nice to us. My boyfriend ordered a Thai beer which they recommonded, and he loved it. I didn't order any drink but water. We ordered Thai spring rolls to start which was awesome. Then we ordered a Pad Thai and a seafood hot plate and some rice. Food was very delicious. During the supper, I can see the servers were running around, but we were well taken care by them. I didn't see that they were rude to any other customers either. I didn't see any lady that people mentioned who has $$ sign in her eyes. I did appreciated that servers recommonded drink and food to us coz we are not very familiar with Thai food. Recommondation was reasonable too, I didnt see any upselling attitude from servers. I guess maybe they have improved??Or actually people made it up coz they dont like recommondations??
From my actual experience, I would definitely going back again coz. #1 Food was really amazing. #2 Atmosphere was great. #3 Price was reasonable. #4 Servers were nice.
I do highly recommend those who never try this restaurant should go there at least once. It worths to go and try and find it out urself.

Rose Thai brings a pleasant touch of Thai to the community of West Vancouver with it's good food, excellent service and a wonderful fine dining atmosphere. If you go there I am sure that you will enjoy the pleasant Thai decor and soft music that is played.
I frequently go to the restaurant, where I am greeted by "Rose" with her big smile, who has been always been happy, very friendly, providing great service and excellent food over the last two years that I have dined at the restaurant; either for business lunches in the afternoon or for an enjoyable dinner in the evening. The service is excellent as I have found my pot of tea or teacup never to run empty. On some special occasions while dining in the evening, have had the pleasure of listening to live music where very talented musicians perform - singing and playing soft enjoyable music that is something special and unique to find where one can eat and relax to the soft beat and swing of the music.

When talking to the owner she seems to have different themes and events planned each month or on those special occasion as she tries to connect with the people in the community who are interested in the arts of fine music and fine dining.

I have eaten here weekdays for the incredible lunch deal and been so satisfied. I have also eaten here twice from the regular menu and been more than pleased. The special tea in the glass teapot with the candle warmer is great as you always have hot tea. White tableclothes and peaceful ambiance. The penang curry was wonderful and spiced perfectly. I loved the green tea rice cake for dessert. So unique, somewhat like a green gummy bear with toasted walnuts. Other desserts I want to come back and try.
