Authentic Iranian food at very reasonable prices. Dine in or take out. Open daily 10 am to 11 pm.
We had hankering for some Persian food and we decided to have a go at this place. Should be good given all the reviews, right?
We stepped into the place, clearly its previously life as a bar was immediately obvious. No matter, they seem to have it well kept and it lends a quirky atmosphere to the place. The server was friendly enough, though clearly not on top of the menu.
Our crew ordered a wide sampling of food, from koobideh, chicken, fish, beef kabobs.
I noticed right away one of the grilled tomatoes still had the sticker left on the skin. Come on! That's just sloppy.
The fish was actually quite okay, but it went downhill from there. The chicken was very juicy & tender, but too salty, like it had been sitting in a brine too long or to hide ... something. Unfortunately, no hiding from the koobideh and kebab torsh. This stuff, I would say was bordering on bad. As in spoiled meat bad.
(Don't tell me I don't know what I'm eating, we've had quite a bit of Persian food, here and elsewhere). Strangely, one of our party had been here earlier in the day and vouched that it tasted just like it did then, so it was not a one-off miss. And oddly enough, the entire staff, including the kitchen, had apparently rotated out already.
I'm not sure what happened, is this a really off day for them? With all these decent reviews, I would have been hoping for at least a reasonable, passable meal. No such luck.
This is, by far, the worst Persian food I've had in a long, long time. I'll be glad if I get away from this place without getting sick. There are SO many other choices in the area. Geeze, take a few minutes and drive up to Yaas or even down the block to one of the other joints. Their stuff there is way better and fresh tasting.
Highly NOT recommended. Don't go there, Stay far away.
I have been wanting to write a review for this place since I went about a year ago, but was too lazy to enter the restaurant description.
This is one of the most interesting places I have dined at. It is a Persian diner/bar/grill.
They have daily specials, and the prices of those are particularly low, and the regular menu was good value as well. The food is a hybrid of actual diner food and traditional Persian food. The wife had some kind of curry special that came with a big plate of rice for somewhere around 6 bucks. It was reasonably tasty. I had a "hamburger" and fries. The crinkle fries were so so. The "hamburger" was a surprise though, as it was actually a kebab burger. That was something different, and decent. They serve flat bread and a raw onion at the table, I guess that is Persian tradition. I can't say we enjoyed that, we left most of it on the table. There is no fountain pop here. They do have a selection of booze.
I liked the overall vibe of the ambiance, with its old fashioned dark wood and big booths along the wall. However, what really detracted from it was these big cheesy white vinyl tablecloths. It made the place feel quite cheap. If they simply got rid of these, ambiance would improve 100%.
We were served by a young Persian woman, who was somewhat distant, but got the job done. However, she was the most interesting part of the visit. She was goddess-like beautiful, but she was dressed up in 80s style garb akin to what Madonna would wear, complete with big earrings and big hair. This wasn't a bad thing, I thought it was totally awesome ... dude. It was just the icing on the cake of what made this place so totally interesting.
I really should go back and try it again. However the lack of fountain pop is a downer. The funky waitress was half the experience and I am not sure we will get the same interesting server again (I often peer in when passing by and don't see anyone funky). So I guess I don't go back because the visit probably won't be as interesting as the first.
I highly recommend trying this place at least once though.
Our usual weekend dinner gang was in the mood for something different, and Mrs. C always craves Iranian food, so we decided to give this place a try. The restaurant is located near Ambleside, and the decor looks like it used to be a diner/cafe or something similar in its last incarnation.
The whole place was reasonably tidy and comfortable, although the w/c could use some attention, and it is about time for some renovations to the dining area. There were lots of families dining in the place, but we got a booth without any trouble. Service was good, and our server was very friendly and helpful. We were amazed at how cheap the prices were for all the menu items, and that was a welcome surprise, especially in tony West Van.
We all ordered kubideh, except for one in our group who ordered fish and chips for his own perverse reasons. The kubidehs were all huge portions, and of course they all came with a roasted tomato, a pickled pepper, lime wedges, and tons of basmati rice with saffron. We also got lots of pita bread on the side and two kinds of tzatziki (or something like it) and some raw onion. The kubideh was fabulous, although the f&c was merely adequate.
We left with bellies full to bursting and most of our money still in our wallets. A very positive experience.
Recommended.
A friend recommended that we go try out this place. I am glad we went!
We did not know much about the cuisine and so we ordered 4 different things.
The Babaganoush was really good!
The Lamb Shank was awesome! It was served with green rice mixed with faba beans.
My husband and son shared tenderloin kebab and chicken kebab . Both were so juicy and fresh - Too much rice - enough to feed a horse!
Very good value and fantastic food! We will be catering our Christmas house reception from the Red Hot Grill.
It was late tonight and we wanted to get some food. We saw the restaurant next to 7 Eleven on Marine Drive in Ambleside called RED HOT GRILL. We walked in and it was quite empty. Mind you it was almost 10PM. We hesitated but then the lady was so gracious and invited us to sit down.
The place had tiffany lamps and served middle eastern cuisine! At first we were skeptical but then the food came - we were amazed. We ordered something called the Ambleside Kebab. It had a chicken skewer, a ground beef skewer and a skewer of beef tenderloin and two bbq whole tomatoes - a big plate of rice and a plate of salad!
The chicken was so juicy and tender, the ground beef was amazing! My wife knows her food and she absolutely loved the tenderloin! All of this cost only $25! We were very satisfied.
The Red Hot Grill has fantastic food. The setting is a bit strange but we were here for the food and will certainly be back with our friends.
My title sums it up really! the food is divinely tasty, huge portions, great value and a nice location.
You should not expect engaging service or outstanding decor, just casual, tasty, and exotic food :)
i believe there are lunch or pre-dinner specials. the dish i enjoy most is the plate that feeds two, which really can feed 3, and the tsaziki style dip with pita.
I would definently reccomend trying it out as a casual eatery.
I've been here a few times and usually order for pick up. The food is consistent and tastes great.
The staff are kind and you can always depend on a plate of kabab and rice to fill up the hungriest person.
I would come back more often but I'm usually out downtown. I walked by yesterday and was reminded of the good value versus some of the other kabab plces in town.
