Best Restaurant in West Vancouver Ever!
By PPolley of West Vancouver (1 Review)

The meal I had last week at Matteo’s was the second best I’ve ever had in West Vancouver. (The first best was the first time I had the pleasure of dining at Matteo’s.) The only reason it was second best was that the surprise element was gone. I already knew how fantastic it was going to be!

Décor
The charming patchwork of Persian rugs paired with boldly checkered tablecloths, make the décor more Bohemian Chick than the expected Mykonos-revisited. It’s a refreshing approach to Greek décor.

Food
The food is stupendous! Because they use only farm-fresh organic ingredients—straight from local growers—the flavors in every dish are explosively delicious. They don’t mince on the garlic either so it’s all super-food healthy!

Wine
Matteo’s does a marvelous job of pairing amazing wines to their evening fare. And, usually the wine is already corked before you get there. So you’re not paying for bottles that hit their peak well after the meal is finished.

Value
You're paying for the highest quality ingredients--farm fresh organic, gourmet spices and oils from Europe, free range protein. The quality makes the prices totally worth it!

I’m going back tonight! Can’t wait!

Appalling Food

My dinner companion and I decided to eat at Matteo's on Sunday night based on the reviews we read at Dine Here. The owner greeted us hospitably and after seating us, immediately came to the table with an open bottle of red wine, which he began to pour into a glass. He seemed quite taken aback when we explained we didn't drink. Next a waiter - I think he was - came with an open bottle of bottled water, that claimed to be San Pellegrino. Instead of condensation on the outside of the bottle, it was on the inside, and one taste suggested very strongly that it was tap water. But we hadn't ordered it, so didn't obejct.

My companion and I agreed that a main course was all we could eat that night, but the waiter brought - unsolicited - 2 bowls of flavoured mayonnaise dip, some quartered pita bread on a side plate, a bowl of what looked like large chunks of beets, but which he told us were turnips marinated in red wine and a large bowl of salsa, which he called Greek Salad.

We each tried a turnip chunk, which were raw and tasted vaguely of the wine, but did not like them. The salsa was OK, although the vegetables were so finely diced, it was difficult to tell what they were. Nevertheless, a close inspection revealed more of the beets, some zucchini, tomatoes and possibly some onion. There was plenty of feta cheese crumbled on top, and it tasted OK. Much like Greek Salad. There was way more than enough of it in the large bowl, too.

Seconds before we got the food we actually did order, a plate of sizzling fried cheese was plopped on our table, as the owner wanted us to have it. It was pretty good, although it was orange and white marbled cheddar, which is readily available at the nearby Safeway. The owner came right back with our "veal with wild mushrooms." He explained that normally it came with rice, but he felt we had eaten enough and didn't need the rice - nor, I guess, any vegetables that might normally have been served, too.

Each plate had two large, tenderised veal cutlets, drowned in a large pool of brownish sauce, which bore no sign of wild - or even tame - mushrooms. In fact, all l I could see in the pool, were blackish specks that I hoped were pepper, and a lump of something white, which I thought must be some of the fried cheese that had fallen onto my plate. Popping it into my mouth, I was horrified to find it was a lump of butter. It hadn't melted, because the meal was not hot enough. I couldn't possibly guess what seasonings had been used, but the lake on my plate was a very strange-tasting brew. I couldn't force myself to eat more than a couple of small bites, even though I am not a picky eater.

After my starving friend had wolfed down his food, while complaining about the taste, we had difficulty getting anyone's attention in order to get the bill. However, the owner eventually brought us the bill, which - based on the food we'd ordered - should have come to $50 before taxes, but had somehow grown to $72.00 Clearly some of the "free" food was not free, after all!

Although we did not complain, the owner very kindly mentioned that he was not charging us the sales tax.... but he was quite put out that we had not lingered over our meal the way we ought to have. Unfortunately, we had lingered far too long in our own opinions, and we both needed fresh air.

As to the decor, it was not in any way reminiscent of Greece, but was attractive enough. As in many Greek Restaurants, the music that occasionally blared through the speakers was very loud, but unlike other Greek restaurants we'd eaten at, was mostly Leonard Cohen.

Overall, that was the worst meal I've ever eaten in a restaurant, but because we didn't want to get into a discussion, we said nothing to the owner about the food or strange service, we just paid, left and drove to Whole Foods for something eatable.

The most memorable dining experience you will ever have!

Wow! Wow!
I had dinner at this restaurant tonight and it was unforgettable in every way. I must say that I'm not sure why there were any reviews that weren't 100% positive on this restaurant: "still ironing out the wrinkles"? Certainly not these days!
Matteo served us personally and paid every attention to us: it was like we were his own personal dinner guests. I have never been so pleased with a dining experience before! The food was unbelievable. I am a vegetarian and he created numerous dishes for me to sample: every single one was perfectly fitting to my picky diet and each dish was absolutely tasty in and of itself. Every time Matteo walked by the table, he was bringing more little treats and tastes and dishes to try out. The wine was flowing. The desert was something out of a dream: so simple and light but satisfying.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely. It was not too formal and stuffy. The decor was whimsical and inviting and the candle lighting was lovely. Everything (including the restrooms) was immaculate and clean. The prices were very reasonable. This is a higher end restaurant, so if you're used to a $15 per person Earl's type meal, then this place is not for you.......but I can't stress enough that the value is incredible. I feel like I really got my money's worth.
All in all, this was just about the most enjoyable dinner I have ever had. The great service was so refreshing: all the staff treated us like we were their esteemed family and friends (and we are really just a few average young ladies). It is so nice to go somewhere that is free of the usual arrogance that you can often experience from people in the service industry. I'd call this restaurant a fine dining experience without the fluff and fuss....but with all the well placed attentions that one can truly appreciate.
YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE OUT......I know I will be talking about this dining experience for weeks and months to come.

Still ironing out the wrinkles

This restaurant has only been open for a little while, and when we visited, the learning curve was quite evident. The wine we wanted had not been delivered, and the charming waitress had a hard time answering our questions and explaining what some of the menu items were. We had to take our best guess. I wouldn't recommend sitting on the outside, as we did, since you're just about on the sidewalk, and the noise of traffic and dust and dirt don't add up to a pleasant dining experience. The inside is a bit overdecorated for my taste but would surely be more comfortable. The food is not traditional Greek (at least Vancouver style) and you won't find all your favorites. The vegetarian moussaka was decidedly unusual. It's worth another visit.
