Lunch Visit
By cocoeater of vancouver (288 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, June 26, 2009 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

Visited the place during the week for lunch and was impressed overall. They have a small lunch menu with some seafood sandwiches and other items. Ordered off the lunch menu and had the fish rice bowl. Came with 2 pieces of halibut over some salad greens on top of rice. First time I had a rice bowl with green salad. It was good but prefer cooked veggies with rice. The sauce was a terriyaki sauce and a bit too salty for me but overall enjoyed the meal. Service was quick and friendly and the deli style inside provided good ambiance. As for value, a bit over priced for lunch but this is West Van.

Been here several times now. The place is popular, especially in summer. The menu is wide ranging, provided you like fish - otherwise don't go ! I've had the sockeye & chinook salmon in the past. This last time I tried the halibut & chips, which was cooked to perfection. Really succulent. Presentation was good, though the portions can be small & the prices high.

A good atmosphere. Over-priced alcohol. Service OK.

Local Spot
By Digby_Scallops of out there (43 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, November 9, 2007 - 8:45pm [Dine in]

The setting is definately nice. Dundarave is a small community in West Vanc, consisting of largely one street of local merchants. The Dundarave Fish Market is a cross between a high end fish market and bistro.

The restaurant is somewhat tight for space and diners are cramped. As this is I expect very much a local haunt, this is not an issue for most people. For those like me who like to chat with fellow diners, it makes for an interesting evening, but if you value your privacy or are looking for an intimate night out, this is not likely your spot.

The portions are somewhat on the small side and the prices are on the high end. The freshness and quality however are there to support the price. And in the summer when the windows and small patio are open, it is indeed a very inviting dining spot.

On our most recent visit for lunch, I had the "red" chowder and my significant other enjoyed the crab cakes (which are also for sale in the fish market). Both were well prepared and as noted, we were not stuffed but provided an acceptable size for a light lunch which on this occasion we were seeking.

As an aside, there is a wonderful organic butcher a few doors down the street.

Riptide Squid is a hit!
By 99north of Squamish (26 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, April 8, 2010 - 4:05pm [Dine in]

We love fish and after having received a gift card for the Dundarave Fish market decided to go it a try.
We had heard so much about the Rip Tide Squid dish,,it was as good as I had thought it would be. Tasty!
The food in general is good,,,but I would say a tad overpriced but I would come to expect that from being located in Dundarave West Van.

After looking at the menu we decided the best way to spend our gift card was to try appys and that was exactly the way to go. The Entree items were overpriced to say the least.
You get more bang for your buck eating appy's anyway and get to try a lot of different items.

We were seated in front of the fish cooler which I wasn't impressed with,,,the person on the outside get continuosly bumped into from customers buying fish.

All in all, it was a good meal,,,we personally wouldn't plan a dinner out here because of the price more then anything. There are seafood restaurants out there that your dollar goes a lot farther for the amount of food you receive.

Best Fish & Chips!
By JLgirl of West Vancouver (15 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 3:37am [Dine in]

Let's just say that I don't even like fish & chips, but this place has got the best F&C platter for about $15. I was at a lunch meeting with a colleague in the summer. We both enjoyed it so much that we wanted to stay and have the exact same thing for dinner!

The name says "Fish Market".. but it is indeed a restaurant with patio opens on sunny days. Nothing fancy but great F&C.

I no longer have to drive all the way to Steveston for good F&C!

Had rave review about this place from friend so invited 3 friends and decided to try it out. I asked the waiter what the meal came with by way of veg or salad and she told me vegetables so I ordered the halibut in coconut sauce. Friends got great portions in their food but my halibut arrived on its own - small portion in sauce and nothing else - no veg or rice - just the fish - took me about 3 minutes to eat it - still hungry so ordered a salad and pinched some of my friends bread to mop up sauce. Asked for more bread but it never came. Would recommend the servers get trained on the menu so they can advice patrons accurately on what the dishes comes with as this was not enough to satisfy - quality and taste was great

Crab cakes - fresh and delicious.

Where else can you go and get something like fried smelt?

Sablefish and Sea bass are properly portioned and have always (in my experience) been perfectly cooked. The menu is concise and simple and offers lots of choice.

I will agree that the service can be a bit lax and the bar area is somewhat small, but the patio is great during the summer and the food delivers.

Perfection
By interactbiz of North Van (32 Reviews)

We tried this for the first time a few months ago. The concept of a fish market and a restaurant in one location seems so right because freshness is everything when you eat seafood.
Our visit left us wondering why we hadn't been here before. Dinner was perfectly prepared and presented. Not formal service but friendly and efficient.
Our return visits were perfectly fine. Again, food was impeccable including the extravagant deserts. They have a reasonable selection of wine by the glass.
My wife - who does not love seafood - now considers this one of her favourite restaurants. Me too.

not bad, not great

Went there last night with a group. The upstairs room is really nice for that, very cozy but a bit too warm. Service was friendly, food was for the most part really good but they delivered 2 of the meals really late! Everyone was just about finished their meal when my wife finally had hers delivered. A slight apology, no offers of more bread or an appetizer, just "your meal will be late and your meal will be even longer". The waitress even recommended the one that was really late!

The really bad part: don't order the beer on tap! That's a good rule for any establishment that you might be unsure of their sanitation practices.

In the end: for the money Milestones & Earls provide equal if not better seafood with definitely better food & you can be sure of the sanitation. I won't return to the Dundarave Fish Market & I don't think it deserves the accolades from the local magazines as there are way better restaurants on the North Shore.

Good fish but the best fries!
By gjws of wvan (6 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, June 13, 2008 - 11:10pm [Dine in]

I have been to this neighbourhood restaurant several times and never been disappointed. Must have the fries! So crispy and round and not soggy. I eat the dips but don't really need them. The fish and prawns has been good. The coconut milk with ginger and lime sauce is heavenly. Unfortunately I haven't had room for the dessert as I always eat my fries. Seating is a bit cosy. I like the fishy decor.

Too Much Hype

when two friends and I decided to try this restaurant we were giddy with anticipation. Foodies all we looked forward to something different. The ambience is charmy but no doubt about it - you're crammed into it - inside and out. The service is what you expect from late teen servers with no real experience. The food? Well the Fish Sizzle went down well with my companions. The lemon rub squid with lemon aioli (why do they say that wne it is the AIL (garlic) that makes it ailoli, was mostly dill rubbed squid with dill mayo. Too late for my hives. My crabcakes came about the thickness of a pencil, thrown down with a sorry, bout that, they're a little overdonw, I'll get you some more. The ONE more, looking exactly like it did in the dispaly case only cooked, arrived aftere my freinds had completed their diners and their plates cleared. And the little bit of mesclun in a bked cup that arrived with the plate I am hopeful - limp as it was -was meant for garnish! We didn't even bother with dessert. Too little food, cramped dining and poor service allfor too hi a bill. Oh, like a French bisro - excet the waiter wasn't rude. Just forgot us once we were seared.

Superb fresh food. Loved the 2 daily specials coconut prawns and the prawn/scallops in spiced white wine. I also had the smoked salmon pate which is unbelievable (they use candied salmon so it is sweet/cream cheesey. Good service. Casual ambiance which is nice as you can go as you are. Well worth a visit.

Great tasting fresh fish & seafood. Interesting ideas; tempura curry prawns were large and sweet; the dry rub calamari was fabulous. I really like that you can choose your fish and choose your sauce - the menu is flexible. Also the candied pecan salad is a definite signature dish.

Yes it's small...a little crowded but all the best places are. It's also noisy, local and wonderful.

Chef spotted with finger in mouth
By JHolfeld of white rock (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, October 16, 2006 - 2:23pm [Dine in]

I was on my way to the washroom passing the kitchen when one of the cooks licked his finger! Our eyes connected mid lick then he placed a meal on a plate with his hands. I'm not a germaphobe and wasn't in the mood to be confrontational so didn't say anything at the time. Our meal was okay nothing really remarkable. The wait staff was fine but we were crammed into a tiny table that doesn't accomodate the dinnerware about 6 inches away from the neighbouring table. I won't go back.

Vancouver's Best Kept Secret
By brianb of West Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 1:09pm [Dine in]

At first I was a little hesistant about posting this review as my selfish side did not want to share what I like to call "Vancouver's best kept secret" with regards to restaurants. The Dundarave Fish Market is without a doubt the best seafood restaurant I have ever had the pleasure to experience. The food is amazing, the service is exquisite, and the decor is beautiful. Nowhere else in Vancouver will you find such fresh and fairly priced seafood. The owners really know how to make you feel at home and have mastered the art of good food, good wine, and good service. Overall, if you are looking to impress a friend, colleague, or significant other this is the place to take them. Now that the secret is unveiled, it is in your hands to enjoy and spread the word! Cheers!

Pretentious
By oldguy of West End (2 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, August 17, 2008 - 8:37pm [Dine in]

We've been there twice now and I may return. Food is 7 out of 10 but the portions are pretty small. The older I get the less I like pretentious places and I'm afraid that this one is up there. Servers are young and disinterested but the food it hot when it arrives. I just don't feel satisfied after the meal and surely that's what it's all about. If you like mixing with the Dundarave set, like small portions and have an expense account then it's ok. But there are better places around for decent fish (albeit not many) and I'll only return if someone else is paying.

disappointed again

My husbands boss insisted we go. We have been before and said we would not go back , but he is the boss.
We were crammed into our little table with a couple of loud groups either side of us. Not really a good start. We were promptly served but waited far too long for everything and it came all at diferrent times.
The boss's halibut was dry and totally over cooked as was my sole.
Salads were great but we were not there for salads.
It was more friendly this time but the food was sub par.
will not repeat again.
