Mrs dude and i along with the dude juniors were in West van for the day looking at some shops when saw the Crave beachside, we have been to Crave main a few times.
Ok the menu was not what i was expecting because of my previous experinces at Main street.
it was quiet, we ordered a few dishes to share and the most important thing was to get the youngest dude junior something to eat, kids.
the waitress got him some fries right away and he was fine for the rest of the meal. the food was decent , nothing earth shaking and the drinks were reasonable , service was good , very good, but then at 300pm on a sunday , i would expect it ot be good with only three tbals in the place. the bill for the four of us drinks etc was 75 beans. about what i would expect WV.
may go back if we are around the area
2nd time in over 40 years of dining out that I left NO tip ! That should sum it up; but the details are they sat us at the one table that all waitstaff decided to ignore. Disheartening when those around you who come after you get orders taken and delivered . I had to start to walk to the bar waving my menu pleading for some service. Placed our orders which came in a suitable amount of time - but both our orders were in error (wrong fillings in omlettes). There are too many nice places around with good service so there is no need to go back to Crave. Menu is also very spotty with little to choose from (eg...ONE sandwich on the sandwich section.) Too bad, nice location...but, NOT going back !
My husband and I have been frequenting Crave on Main st for sometime now and have always been delighted with the quality of the food and service.
A short time ago we decided to switch it up for our anniversary and try Crave beachside. What an amazing location and view! Unfortunately that was the only highlight of our experience there.
We ordered the sablefish and risotto. The sablefish was overcooked and dry. If you're familiar with sablefish you'll know that it is a very oily fish and overcooking it is a difficult feat to master indeed, however they seem to have it down pat, Bravo! The risotto was bland and had no bite left to it. It was comparable to being served an expensive bowl of mushy porridge.
I wanted to send the entire meal back but my husband asked that I not make a fuss and instead make the best of our evening.
I would not recommend this restaurant. Should you decide to try it, go for the view and bring a hearty supply of herbs and spices in you purse!
Ate on the patio, which was nice. Service was excellent. Waitresses very friendly and very attractive too! For a kind of casual place, not actually that cheap. For four of us, the bill was $180, all in. And for that, we shared only two starters and two desserts.
Shortrib poutine was good, but really lacking in cheese, which was not the case when I had it before on Main. Beet salad was quite boring and lacking in dressing. Mains were pretty good, but my meatloaf arrived cold and was sent back. Salmon was extremely underdone and also sent back. A bit rare is good, but this was really raw inside. Accompanying veg was a very dull bit of salad. Salmon flavour was really dull. Just roast with a bit of a sauce, but really under flavoured to me. Ribs were quite good and a big portion. Shortrib pasta was enjoyed by my daughter.
All in all, a nice enough experience, but not impressed with food or price. Probably wouldn't go back, despite really good fries and service that was really nice and doing there best to help.
The food was excellent, the service was terrible. For example, when we asked what the soup of the day was, the answer was "well, earlier today it was x, I think that's what it still is". When the wine we had was no longer available, and we ordered a different one, we had to ask for new glasses, and were then told there weren't enough in the back. When the wine eventually came, it was off, we complained. We were told that 3 people in "the back" (including one who apparently is a sommelier) had tried it and said it was OK. I know this wine, it was off.
We've been to Fraiche in West Van (same owner - Wayne Martin) which is excellent. This one is not in the same league.
Entrees for a great dish of sausages, eggs and potatoes was $10.00 Eggs Benny same price. Coffee was outstanding ( $3.00)
Food was solid and predictable and very delicious. If I wasn't so health conscious I would have ordered a side of buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup. If you live in West Van ( we do ) it's a great brunch/after church place . If you don't it is NOT worth crossing the Lions Gate Bridge for. The staff are all outstanding. As I mentioned in my earlier reviews Chalmers (the owner) has to have the most ultimate people skills and attracts people to work for him who are equally stellar. ( His son floats around the place sometimes and has obviously the same skills in making all patrons feel great. )
I will be coming here again midweek . I love it as an alternative to the big mall places.
Some of what previous reviewers have said is true, but I think I've eaten here twice in the last month and had much-better-than-3-stars dinners both times.
Yes, service is a touch inconsistent. Definitely friendly but maybe a little inexperienced? But don't let that scare you - we're not talking Swiss Chalet levels of inexperienced here.
I wish I could say I've sampled more of the menu but I'm afraid I can't stop myself from ordering the poutine and the burger. The fries are outstanding, the shortrib poutine is a revelation (easily as good as Feenie's was, and the cheese is not missed here), and the burger, as said in the review title, is the best I've ever had in vancouver. Yes, Earl's and Cactus Club are good, and Vera's and Fatburger certainly have their place, but there is a new standard in town. Organic beef, on ciabatta, with real bacon and real aged cheddar. It is FANTASTIC.
Drink list is a touch disappointing, I'll say that - relative to the menu, it comes up short. I was hoping for some solid cocktails and a deeper wine list... the server did say they were working on it so we'll see how that goes.
By the way if you live on the North Shore and fancy grabbing dinner before the hockey game, this is it. For me, anyway!
Best value in West Van for sunday brunch ($10) or burger and home made fries ($15),
the poutine is also excellent. Although I haven't tried some of their more ambitious menu items.
It's a perfect location if you want a stylish restaurant setting in west van but also want solid comfort food. I have aways found the service quick and friendly
We had dinner here last night. It was fairly quite, as I expect most place to be at this time of year. We sat up by the windows and had a great view of the street as well as the restaurant.
Our server was very friendly and attentive. We were not sure what to or so she suggested that the kitchen prepare a few items for our dinner. Outstanding. The crab cakes were all crab and fresh and sweet. The risotto was tasty and creamy.
A very good experience overall!!! Will be back.
Really could not have asked for better service for a lunch. Server was attentive, and incredibly friendly. Absolutely remarkable. I find the prices a bit expensive for what you get, but with solid food, you cant really go wrong for lunch... Crave wont disappoint
This being said, the interior of the place just seems off. I would do some redecorating if it were up to me.
Went to Crave last night for dinner to see if it would be suitable for a wedding reception. Has a very nice, clean lines, hotel style decor. Obviously it has an amazing view with outdoor seating if the weather is nice. Ordered the mussels, poutine, and rigatoni for the two of us to share. The food was very good and the mussels were cooked perfectly. A friend joined us almost 2 hours later for dessert but also ordered the mussels and her's too were perfect so they obviously know how to cook mussels. For those used to poutine, it was a little odd having it without cheese curds but it still was a nice dish. The waitress was the perfect mix of friendly, professional and attentive. While waiting for our friend to arrive for dessert I asked the waitress the seating capacity, explaining that I was looking at doing a private function that would require a restaurant buy-out. She came back with the information and said that she would get the manager to come over and speak to us as we were waiting for someone anyways. I saw her go over to speak to him and he looked right at us. She came back and said he would be over as soon as he was done his meeting. Well I watched his meeting for the next 1.5 hours. It consisted of having a couple of beers with other staff, having some cheesecake, watching the baseball game and then having some beers with some more staff. It was 8:30pm on a Saturday night and completely dead so I figured the idea of a $10,000 buy-out on a Sunday night in the off season would be appealing. Well after waiting 1.5 hours and the waitress trying again on her own accord to get him to come over we finally left. The management doesn't seem to care if you come here or not.
I recently tried the crave restaurant in West Vancouver and don't agree with the previous comments about some of the food. The menu does say that the cobb salad is "buttermilk FRIED chicken" and the ahi tuna roll does state that it is a "tempura roll"...I'm sure that always means deep fried. I know the orignal crave uses romaine lettuce in their cobb salad, not iceberg lettuce and it is a huge and very filling meal. The short rib poutine was also very nice...not like the traditional poutine many people may know. Comforting on a cold winter night!
Weather kept the great outdoor deck empty so the room was crowded and we waited for a table. The young bartender was quick witted and knowledgeable so we enjoyed the wait and we liked the choices of wines by the glass. Soon, we were seated at a table and our order taken promptly. The food is casual but has flair. I enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich which had a lighter taste than what is usually found. I thought I was ordering two small plates but was served more food than I expected. We have enjoyed the 2 related restaurants, Crave and Fraiche, so had high expectations for this one. We were not disappointed.
I had such high hopes for this restaurant. The food was cold and unappetizing.... I had the asparagus salad and the pulled pork sandwich. Service was pretty good but the ambiance was terrible. The downstairs washrooms were not very appealing and the floors were so slippery that a woman actually slipped and fell.
The quality and quantity of food was exceptional. Everything was very well priced, including the wine & beer list. Lower than any other place I know in North or West Vancouver. The food portions are very generous and so very tasty! The short rib poutine is like no other and the mussles were perfect. My partner had the ribs, big and juicy BBQ ribs..need I say more. Went down perfectly with a bottle of Hess 7. To finish we shared the Key lime pie. I now know why they made that song, my my my key lime pie. Delicious!
From the moment we entered the restaurant the service was above expectation. The hostess was friendly and our server was very informative and really sweet.
The ambiance could use abit of work to make the restaurant more cozy feeling but besdies that Crave Beachside gave me a night to remember. Thankyou!
I went here the other night and was disappointed in my experience. I have heard people rave about the food and wanted to try it for myself.
I don't know if these people went to a different restaurant or what, but it was nothing to rave about. Crave tries to be different but is just another Earl's, Cactus Club, Joeys, etc. They pride themselves on fusion food and "affordable prices". But I have had better. My burger was undercooked, and the tuna roll was tasteless. The drinks tasted watered down, and the staff seemed inexperienced. They did not know the menu, and I had to ask several times for my drink to be refilled.
I will definitely not be going back.
Wow, finally a west van restaurant I can get with. Ridiculous view of the beach, unbelievable and totally reasonably priced food, great wine and beer selection, a super friendly and helpful staff and it seems so organized for being open just a short while. It's the kind of menu where you see stuff that you have to get next time. I will be back here very soon.
I thought this one would be just as good as the one on main. It wasn't worth the trip out to West Vancouver.
The chef must have not been there that night because everything was over cooked. The staff was decent, but not that great. Our waiter was extremely pushy. I would not recommend this to others.
