I went there Wedneday November 11, normally on wednesday their saily special is the chicken katsu. I decided to pay more and try out their Prawn and Scallop Teriyaki Bento (which would be the saturday lunch special)
There miso soup was alright, pretty standard. My bf and his brother order two different types of odons.. they were both too salty and just ok nothing special. Because it was my idea going there.. they just responded "its alright..." though i felt bad. Finally my food took a lil longer..came with a small salad and TINY portion of the prawns and scallop... which had no flavor only fishy aroma..the cucumbers from my salad wasnt fresh. And the peanut sauce on the rice didnt even taste like peanut sauce. It was dead as always so my service was quick, which is good. Service was good. And ambiance was nice. Thats about it, i wouldnt recommend it or go back to it. But it was a nice try. I was thinking maybe i should give their sushi a try.. and maybe just not order their hot foods next time.. but...judging by the sushi that came from the bento.. i dont think it will impress me much or change my decision.

We arrived and were so looking forward to a lovely evening of good food and wine with some friends. We spent hundreds of dollars on appetizers and entrees and bottles of wine. Service was okay not stellar. The males ordered scallops as they saw another diner having the entrée with six scallops and it sold them that this is what they too wanted. When we got to the entrees the scallop orders were served with two scallops on each plate. For the money they charge for an entree of scallops and you get served two the men were not pleased. They brought this to the servers attention and the response was they are served by weight. If this was so I would expect those scallops to be very large scallops and not two small 1" round scallops. Our group felt that the kitchen perhaps fell short of scallops and rather than saying we have run out they pushed two substandard orders at paying customers. So not to belabor the point as half the party did not feel they got fair value or treated properly and on top of that left hungry- so we will not be returning. We will spend our money at other great new dining locations in Victoria.

Great Place for langford...FINALLY

I have been to Basilico a number of times now so I can give an honest review because you really should see if a place either improves from your first visit or lives up to the initial visit. My wife and I tend to eat out a decent amount and try to get to different places throughout Victoria. We can say more about Langford establishments because we live out that way. I was impressed the first time I tried this place and it has only got better from there. I consider my self somewhat of a foodie as I like to create and cook myself and the pasta at Basilico is very good. That is saying a lot because I have been to a few "fine dining" restaurants and been quite unimpressed with their pasta. John and crew make some very good pasta. I really enjoy the Linguine Carbonara and the Curry Chicken Linguine. The Vegetarian Lasagna is also very good. My wife had the steak with a Parmesan risotto that was to die for!

I have brought each of my teenage kids and they have all enjoyed the meals. The staff has been good to very good each time we went and the owner John is very hospitable. All in all I think it fits perfect in Langford. Not pretentious, very good food, good value and a pretty good wine selection. Sounds like a couple of people did not have a very good experience, but the 7 or 8 times I have been it has been great and I can not say that about too many pubs or restaurants with that type of consistency (yes I am speaking to you Tap House...lots of ups and downs).

A Very Good Tea

I thought I would be the last person who would like a traditional English tea, as I'm not terribly fond of sandwiches, or pastries, but I love the White Heather nonetheless. Under new ownership with beginning tea prices now increased to 14.75, it is more of a culinary experience than a meal. It is the perfect afternoon with friends and I always go with at least one other person so we can order "The Big Muckle for 2" at 43.95. It comes on a 3 tiered platter that is visually arresting. I feel like a child in a candy store, gazing at the goodies, while sipping tea (the selection is excellent) and sharing conversation. Everything in the Big Muckle was excellent. I never could imagine a cucumber sandwich tasting like that! Their "baking" is well known, so I will not elaborate further other than to say the accolades are well deserved. Perhaps where they excel the most is in the service; friendly but professional. They describe everything in great detail and with enthusiasm. Even calling them for the reservation is a nice experience

The tea room is nothing special decor wise. A rather plain homely room with worn furniture on Oak Bay Avenue, but one hardly notices once the food arrives.

First and last visit.
Friendly, informative service.
Romantic but somewhat too dark atmosphere (and what's up w/the Dj?)
OK sides - nice simple coleslaw
Jerk chicken was not authentic - just thick wet sauce on top of basic cooked chicken breast
Ribs were too sweet (prefer tangy/spicy) and while tender, contained big chunks of cartilage - yuck

Won't be back. Too bad, we were looking forward to some Caribbean fun!

Senzushi is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Victoria.

The restaurant looks both inside and out like it just landed from Japan, where I lived for over a decade. It is Japanese owned and run which is very important if you want really good, authentic Japanese cuisine. In Japan, with the exception of "Denny's" or Denny type restaurants" you do not mix different dishes in one restaurant. If you want really good tempura, you eat at a restaurant that does just tempura and nothing else. The same goes for ramen, in ramen only places, sushi in sushi only places ,etc. The Japanese understand that to do a certain dish really well, you must work on perfecting only that dish...sometimes for generations. Here, for the most part, one finds the All In One Japanese Restaurant which is unfortunate as there will always be some unevenness even in good Japanese restaurants like Senzushi.

So my list of Great, Very Good, Fair and Bad would be : GREAT sashimi and sushi prepared by their Japanese ita-mae (sushi chef) and his assistants; expertly sliced and presented, on a good quality sushi rice that is properly seasoned and the age-dashi tofu which has a particularly good broth. VERY GOOD: the tempura ( a good value when ordered as a dinner), the unagi, and the three large combination dinners which are also a good value for those with large appetites, and the sunomono salads. FAIR: any of the cooked fish. The portions are small and often over or under cooked. BAD: the tonkatsu (breaded pork) that was thin, tough and overcooked. The cooked white rice which accompanies many meals could be better. I believe it is of a lower grade than the sushi rice and is also sometimes on the dry side, as though it needed more soaking prior to cooking, or they lifted the lid too soon. The miso soup is also a little thin.

I have never ordered any of the noodle dishes because I know better than to think that one can eat good soba or ramen in any Japanese restaurant other than one dedicated exclusively to that dish. Vancouver has several dedicated ramen restaurants (Kintaro, Benkei, Motomachi, etc.) Why Victoria has 0 ramen restaurants with a Japanese student population this high is something of a mystery.

Despite some shortcomings on a few dishes, which I feel are caused by too large a menu (and the impossibility of doing all to an equally high standard ), Senzushi is far, far better than many of the so called Japanese restaurants in Victoria. It is also a fairly good value for the money and has good service. I usually order the chirashi sushi which is enormous, and filled with expertly cut, high quality fish and traditional Japanese toppings which are also well executed. The only drawback here, is that I wish they would offer a smaller size chirashi, as it is a bit too large for me to finish. Such a shame as I want to finish every last bite.

Prett good location. Nice size of place. Pretty good service. Expensive for what you get. There are better breakfast places in town. The fruit and granola type plate they serve is weak and over priced. The fruit was very cheaply/thinly sliced. The eggs benny wasn't as good as I had been told, in fact far, far from it. Generalliy, I would say that Avalon is over-rated, and I think that is a fair and accurate assessment. May not go back.

So I enjoy the 5th Street. The service is average, but for myself, and most people I know who go there, we aren't going there for the service. We like it because its a great place to hangout. I slip in there occassionally for a few quiet ones after work, to catch up with friends, maybe watch the hockey game, and have a tasty and reasonably priced bite to eat. The atmosphere is alway good when I have been there, but I'm speaking specifically about the bar side. I haven't been there for a sit down meal with my partner yet and I'm not entirely sure that we will. Its just not that type of place for us. The drinks are a very good value, perhaps some of the best prices. That keeps up patronage. I like it, and will continue to go there! Well done!

I told him this wasn't southern BBQ

I lived in North Carolina for 10 years and am an enthuiastic foodie and was so stoked when a BBQ joint was going to open up here - I contacted Ken, the owner, and told him I was excited to try it out and he said to let him know how they were doing. After giving them a couple of weeks to work out the kinks, we ordered food to try. We ordered Pork Ribs - Brisket - Shredded Pork - Hushpuppies - Beans - Glazed Carrots - Slaw and a few other items. I contacted Ken right away to let him know that he was missing the mark for Southern BBQ and what he could do to make it more authentic. First of all - these are NOT true hushpuppies at all - this does NOT represent the South - hushpuppies are suppose to be mealy because of the corn meal and not spongy, they should almost be cake-like with a CRISP outer crust - NOTHING and I mean NOTHING was seasoned with salt or pepper,and who dares to serve food without any seasoning? who does that? NOT SOUTHERNERS, that's for sure. The Ribs were inedible, the shredded pork is suppose to have a vinegar based sauce and finish to the tongue which it did not, the "baked beans" tasted like a cup of mushy and mealy BBQ sauce and not a hint of baked bean taste. The slaw had no seasoning and the homemade ranch dressing was tasteless and completely unappetizing. The glazed carrots were FANTASTIC! but that was all. After waiting 6 months, we tried again, thinking he would have heeded the advice of someone who knows her Southern BBQ and has cooked it herself for over 20 years - food was still NOT seasoned at all, the hushpuppies were the same disaster as before and the ribs were again completely flavourless, tough and smothered in a thick, smokey sauce that wasn't salted either. We have since tried one more time with the addition of a few new items (3 strikes and you are OUT) - the buscuits are laughable, the mac & cheese lacked flavour, seasoning and tasted like flour pasted macaroni, the "cobbler" was as bland as you could find and again, the glazed carrots were fantastic! Perhaps when Southerners tell you how to fix your food properly and authentically you should listen. Most people who I've spoken with said they didn't know if it was good BBQ or not because they didn't have experience with Southern BBQ.
The BBQ Pig Joint isn't perfectly authentic either but at least they make an effort to serve a good, hearty, SEASONED version of the food I learned to love to cook and eat.

Not as Impressed As I Thought I Would Be

After hearing plenty about this place I had to finally try them out at their swanky new location. I popped by Saturday for a quick lunch after a look over the menu. I was actually expecting higher prices but they were fairly reasonable, pizzas around 13 bucks, pasta dishes for around 13/14 dollars but more on that later.

I was dining alone and quickly got a seat by the window from the friendly hostess. My waitress arrived shortly after I sat down with a menu and to take my drink order. I asked about a beer that I never tried and she offered to give me a sample. As it turns out the beer was not to my liking so I ordered a brew that I knew.

While waiting for my beer to arrive another server brought by some crusty bread and a small dish of olives. The olives were very nice, the bread not so much. The bread was very crusty, a thick , chewy almost hard crust to it that made my teeth hurt. I really think they should review the bread they are serving.

I ordered the gnocchi and when it arrived it really wasn't anything I expected. First off, it seemed like a very small portion. The gnocchi came in a sort of spinach gravy type thing that was okay but not really what I had in mind. The gnocchi was tasty enough, I ate it but would of preferred a tomato based sauce, my bad for ordering the wrong thing.

This was a busy place for lunch on a Saturday. I had a feeling my waitress was slammed with customers as she took much too long to bring me things like the bill. Wasn't impressed with the service.
I also wasn't really impressed with the table set up. I was sitting alone for lunch but halfway through my meal a young couple arrived at the table next to me and you are literally sitting right with them, just inches away. This is really not my cup of tea. I would of loved to of finished my lunch in my own little space but what can you do, that is the set up of this restaurant.

The new building Zambri's is in is quite impressive, a beautiful space. As for Zambri's itself I found the new space nothing special at all, although I look forward to a warm summer afternoon in July enjoying lunch and a bottle of wine on their patio that looks onto Yates.

Although not what I really expected I will be back.

Almost as Good as a Trip to Japan

My husband and I go to Japan nearly every year primarily to eat real Japanese food, as alas,the vast majority of "Japanese" restaurants in Victoria and in much of the NW are mediocre at best. I've concluded that the reason why they can stay in business at all is because the majority of diners simply don't know good Japanese from bad Japanese food, which is perfectly understandable if you have never lived there.

We had pretty much resigned ourselves to eating poor quality rice, and bentos from hell until our next trip back. Then we wandered into this tiny cafe on Oak Bay Ave and finally found what we didn't think existed here; authentic, beautifully made Japanese food.

The reason we didn't make this happy discovery earlier perhaps was because of its name. It doesn't claim to be a Japanese restaurant, but a green tea cafe and the limited menu includes non-Japanese items such as sandwiches and quiche that you order at the counter. True to its name. "Kissako Green Tea Cafe" offers several kinds of green tea, but most people expect free tea in Japanese restaurants and don't want to pay extra for it. I just asked for water.

My husband and I finally decided to give Kissako a try when we noticed a chicken bento for I believe 10.75 scrawled on the chalk board in front of the shop.
My husband was interested in that and I was more curious to try a couple of maki (rolled) sushi. We became hopeful almost at once when we entered and heard Japanese being spoken behind the counter (my husband is fluent in Japanese) as this was an excellent sign that the food would not be the pseudo Japanese cuisine found elsewhere.
And we were right. The minute his bento hit the table, we knew it was real just by how it looked; artistic for lack of a better word. A bento is a box of several compartments, each containing different food. The largest section contained the chicken, which consisted of small cubes of chicken and vegetables, in a light sauce. The other compartments contained some beautifully made Japanese "tapas" consisting of 2 slices of stuffed rolled egg omelette pinwheels (in Japan, much attention is paid to how well this type of omelette is executed) and a gyoza type dumpling, another compartment contained the rice, which interestingly was not white, but brown or "genmai" style rice which has become popular recently in Tokyo. I ordered 2 maki rolls and they were very good, primarily because the rice was of a higher quality than the norm, cooked perfectly, and seasoned just right. In real Japanese cuisine, it's all about rice done right!

The menu, including the sushi offerings are quite limited. This is a tiny green tea cafe not a full Japanese restaurant and it is not open in the evenings. Still, it is a very rare gem and I cannot wait to go back.

My family and I have been regular customers of Delicious Pizza for several years now and we are just as happy with their food and service now as we were to begin with (which explains why we are still customers of theirs). Not only is their pizza the best we've ever had but the other menu items they have up for offer are super-delicious, too (their Greek salads can't be beat...yum!).

We order from Delicious Pizza often (usually twice a week on average) and we have never been disatisfied with any food or service we have received from them. Their food is always hot (unless, of course, it's supposed to be served cold, such as a salad), always fresh and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS...Delicious (that's Delicious with a capital "D").

As for the service, wow, talk about top-rate; friendly, inviting, quick, organized...all the best rolled into one (not to mention always served with a smile).

Pricewise, Delicious Pizza is more than just a little competitive and we actually find their prices somewhat lower than most other pizza places (most especially in the value-wise area, since their pizza's tend to give you "more bang for your buck" because they don't scrimp with their toppings like some places do). However, even if their prices were to be little higher, we would still order from them because their pizza's are just too darned good to pass up.

Delicious Pizza is the best of the best and you can't ask for much more than that. Definitely 5 stars from us! :-)

For the past couple of years we have seen this spot as a Korean BBQ, then some sort of Hawaiian type thing that lasted a few months and now Real Taste Of India.
After passing by here the past couple of weeks and then reading the first review on dinehere I had to try this place.

Today I enjoyed their buffet lunch with a co-worker and we were both very impressed. We arrived at around 11:50am just as the fresh buffet items were being stocked up in the buffet trays. We quickly filled our plates with some delicious curries, not too spicy, some nice plump and fresh tandorri chicken, a delicious eggplant veggie dish, some great naan bread, hot out of the oven and tucked into it. At almost 4pm I am still full and the thought of dinner hasn't even crossed my mind.

Hot, fresh, nicely spiced and delicious food. The first experience was outstanding and will mean a future visit sooner then later.

Because it's a buffet you basically serve yourself so can't say too much about the service. The girl who filled our water glasses was pleasant enough, although quite shy and a little standoffish. Perhaps she is just getting comfortable with her new position.

The value was outstanding. There are a few eateries in the area with decent enough food but outlandish prices, case in point Beirut right across the street. At Beirut they offer a very smallish swarma platter for about $13.50, outrageous in my view for basically a take away restaurant. Real Taste Of India have an all you can eat East Indian Buffet for $11.99

As word of mouth spreads I believe you are going to see a very successful restaurant at this location, finally , provided they keep up with the value and quality of food. If you are looking for a new East Indian Restaurant to try out try this place, I think you'll be impressed too.

My daughter and I went to this place on a Saturday. We should have been warned because there were many empty tables. The service was slow people who came later were served and when I wanted to place an order I was told an other waiter was serving us which took a while.
I had a hamburger with onions must have come from the day before. They were ice cold and just mixed with some ketchup?? yuk. The fries were re fried with many small burned pieces. My daughter had the eggs benedict with old potatoes as well. When we checked out it took a while because the servers had computer problems We are not going back

New Indian food place - OUTSTANDING

my co-workers and I are always on the lookout for a new place for lunch when mention of a new Indian joint came up. In the old Seoul Kitchen location, Real Taste of India offers an inexpensive buffet ($11.99) lunch that was surprisingly good.
We were shown to a table immediately on arrival and informed a few more dishes were to be placed in the buffet shortly (we arrived about 11:45)
After a short wait and the attentive waitress bringing water we went to check it out.
Rice, Tandoori Chicken, veggies, popadums, pakora, and 3 different curries (one veggie) as well as salad and sides were presented well. The food was AMAZING.
Great bargain, great service and a very nice place. We will add it to the list of places to return.

The Local was very expensive for the quality and quantity of the food. The location is perfect for trapping tourists. We decided to eat indoors and were forgotten when it came to service, and a gratuity was added to our credit card without our knowledge. I will never dine at the local again.

Every time I go to 1515's I always leave happy, great wait staff, good food ( big portions) and awesome drinks! Love how big the menu is! Never had anything that wasn't great looking and tasting there, service is usually quick and the patio is great to sit on during a warm day.

What a great hidden gem for Chinese Food

We just moved to Victoria and have been eating our way around town.
This spot was recommended to us and was amazing.
Service was sketchy at best as the waitress seemed a bit distracted, but the food made up for her shortcomings by 100%.

Home made spring rolls with plum sauce already in them was the starter. This was the coolest thing since sliced bread. I have never seen them made with the sauce inside before.

Wonton soup was shared by all with the freshest won ton dumplings I have ever tasted. Shrimp filled and not the usual 90% cabbage and 10% baby shrimp, these were all fresh shrimp.

Chinese vegetables followed and they were all fresh and tossed in an amazing sauce
We also ordered a Satay Chicken chow mein but had to bring it home as we were stuffed by them.

Everything we ordered was amazing.
The decor was traditional boring Canadian Chinese restaurant but who cares about that.
They need a young talkative active waitress and a coat of paint then this place will be lined up out the door
The bill was only $43 for 3 of us, so no complaints at all

Terrible food, terrible service. The waitress seemed intoxicated. She had bloodshot eyes & her breath smelled of alcohol. She spilled my water & haphazardly placed my food on the table. Not professional at all. I ordered the Pad Thai & mussels. It was disappointing. The Pad Thai did not have the sweet ketchup flavour common in Canadianized Pad Thai instead it tasted like Chinese fried rice noodle. If I wanted Chinese food I would have gone to a Chinese restaurant. Pad Thai is supposed to have a bit of tomato paste. The mussels tasted off as well. It was overpriced & served by a tipsy waitress. The decor was alright but nothing special.

Today we tried Mo:le. We will not be returning. We arrived and were seated immediately, which was good. We asked for coffee, and were politely advised that our server would be with us soon. 15 minutes later, the server, coffee and water arrived. I ordered the basic, eggs basted. My friend ordered the organic oatmeal, todays choice was white peach. Almost 40 minutes later the food arrived at the table. My eggs, besides being cold, were cooked hard, the potatoes cold and greasy. My friend ate her tepid oatmeal with a nice array of cut fresh fruit. That was the best part of both meals. We asked for preserves for the toast and were offered saskatoon berry jam, organic peanut butter or marmalade. We chose the first two. The jam consisted or rock hard little nuggets that seemed to be reconstituted dried berries in a tasteless coating. The peanut butter was also tasteless. The coffee was good. Not worth the money.
