I have eaten here a couple of times as the food is quite well priced and the location is convenient to all points in Victoria as it is on the corner of Gorge and Douglas.
The place is always busy but service is predictable and efficient. I had a coupon which was nice but even at full retail prices, the value is still there. Many of the meals come with wedge fries which stay hot for a long time so be warned. Nothing was greasy and it all seemed well cooked atc.
All in all - a decent place for a meal.
We tried this on Christmas eve when not much else was open. The portions were smaller than I expected so a hungry son wolfed down all the food that I had hoped to take home for the next days (as a snack before the turkey you understand...)
I was a bit peeved at being charged $6 for plain white rice, but the foods we had were extremely good and came in quick succession so we were able to put more than one food on the plate at a time. Authentic? How would I know. I know they had chopsticks at each place setting and if you wanted to use a fork you had to ask for it. The kitchen was clearly in view from the dining area so it was nice to watch someone else working hard - the place was clean and efficiently run. Decor was the normal slightly tacky Chinese restaurant style and the outside does not do the place justice. All in all - it was a very good meal so I do recommend it, even given my finicky tastes.
It's tough to get a table here at peak times (most of the weekend in my experience). This coffee shop/cafe sells a range of lovely sandwiches, salads and quiche. It's always crowded so in summer we have often sat outside. The ambiance facing Shelborne leaves a bit to be desired and sometimes I wish that the proprietor would move people along rather than let them dawdle.
Good food, great coffee and a warm atmosphere has made this one of our favourites...now I will wish I had not told you that as it will be even busier.
our company lunch was held here, had the prawn stir fry, and for $22 was not worth it,
noodles was very oily, the mushrooms were so salty, just ruined, veggies were not flavorful either, only the prawns were ok, very big and juicy, i'm geussing the $22 was for the prawns alone, to me that meal was worth $8, everything else was mediocre, service was ok at best. asked for water and had to ask 2nd time to get it, my colleagues ordered burger's and fish/chips they were good but still not worth the price,
I've had many amazing meals at the Fox - best veggie burger in town, best salad I've ever had period, and yes the breakfasts do live up to the hype. Menu has been changed up recently & I think it's better than ever. There's a reason for the line-up, and admittedly, waiting 10 to 30 minutes is a chore, but you're almost guaranteed a consistently fantastic meal and great friendly service once inside.
The hidden prize is the pie. The meals are so big almost nobody ever has room left to try it, but it's worth a trip there just for the pie - hands down the best I've ever had, and I'm no stranger to pie.
The service criticisms below are a surprise - I've always found the staff to be 100% friendly & fast. Don't trust the complainers, judge for yourself. So many people wouldn't be willing to line up if it didn't live up.
Syn, Platinum, and now its the Office. I hope it stays as the Office for a while since it's a great place. My first time there was for a XMas party and the buffet food provided was great. I will have to go back to try something from the menu, which I'm sure will be delicious as well. The $27 Movie Monday deal for dinner and a movie across the street is an enticing offer. And they have live music too! The different lounge and bar section works well. The only thing I would change: the name. Saying "I'm going to the Office" is confusing and who wants to be reminded of work?!
We visited on a Saturday at 10am and was happy not to stand in line. Ordered two eggs benny, and although I was disappointed that my eggs were overcooked, the meal was good. What I do really enjoy is their baked goods, which can be found at the Royal Museum as well. A line did end up forming later, so I suggest going early (as with every breakkie place in Vic) to beat the rush. I am looking forward to visiting in the summer when the patio is open.
I love this place and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Pizza and pasta for $8.95??? Such a deal! The service is always spot on - friendly, helpful staff. The food is delicious, served hot and is fresh and fantastic. I really enjoy the salads too - and they are all made fresh, so if you are like me and have food preferences, they are so accommodating. Top it off with their tasty desserts and, yup, I'm in heaven. A great place for families - we often have birthday dinners there. Been going there for years and absolutely no complaints. I suspect anyone who complains about this place has ulterior motives - so make up your own mind. I'm positive you would enjoy the restaurant as much as I do. Am I biased? You bet - because it is my favourite place to dine out!!!! OPA!!!
We went to dinner with friends and ordered out meals. Three of the meals were brought to the table and we were told that the fourth one was "on it's way". After 10 minutes we asked again and were told that it was "on it's way". After another 10 minutes the meal finally arrived. By now the other three were just about done and the last person felt like they had to catch up.
The waiter apologized and when the bill came she had taken off a desert. Since the dining experience was ruined we reminded her that it was customary to remove the late dinner from the bill. She said she would ask the manager and returned a few minutes later saying that manager had refused to take the dinner off and told the young lady that was our waiter that she would have to pay for the free desert out of her own pocket.
We asked to speak to the manager and went to the front counter. The manager ran to the back of the restaurant and hid. The staff said she would not talk to us.
We paid the bill and left.
We are regular customers there and have taken our business clients there for lunches as well. Living nearby we often order dinners from them.
I've never been treated so calously by any restaurant in the world.
We won't go back there again and definitely won't be taking business clients to a place that could care less whether you get your food at the same time or not.
Since living in James Bay (4+ years), I have been enjoying one of the few affordable/good places to eat in Victoria. Spending time in Vancouver you realize how overpriced most restaurants are around our city but this is one of the few gems that doesnt cost a fortune and has quality food. The guy who runs this restaurant is one of the friendliest people you will meet and he seems to employ a staff that have similar qualities. Combo D is a massive meal for just over $10 that is more than enough for even my giant appetite.
First, the service: the service was OK. The female server was personable, easy-going, and very quick to provide refills and bread and all that. The only odd thing was, for a restaurant that only had 4 tables with people, she took an inordinate period of time to come and check up on us. Interestingly, once the server had collected our money she literally disappeared and we left the place without anyone saying good-bye or anything.
Second, the food. God, where do I begin? The focaccia bread was nice (almost identical to the bread that they serve at Pagliacci's) and the olive oil balsamic vinegar dip, well, that's easy. A monkey could make that. However, it went downhill from there. For an appetizer, I got the $12 calamari. Medium-sized portion, but over-breaded, soft, and too salty. For an entree, I got the keftethes (Sautéed Greek meatballs baked with red island sauce and feta cheese), which came with vegetables and rice pilaf. The meatballs were nothing to write home about, mediocre to say the least, but they actually contained SINEW and TENDONS! Seriously, I had to politely spit out half of two meatballs because the sinew was tough. The "red island sauce" was little more than a plain-tasting, lukewarm tomato sauce. Not impressive. The vegetables, well, they were just vegetables. The rice pilaf? With every bite I encountered full-undercooked (hard and chewy) rice grains. And the rice pilaf was lukewarm. I couldn't even finish the meal, and, while out of politeness I took the meal home in a doggy styrofoam container, I'm definitely not going to eat it. So, value-wise, not worth the $30 + tax for this lame meal.
Third, ambiance, not much to mention. The place was near-empty, but that's normal for a Monday night. Perhaps. The lighting was a bit glare-ish and bright, but otherwise OK.
I don't know how this restaurant has survived for more than 30 years. Maybe they used to be good. Maybe it's just because there's not many Greek restaurants in town. Maybe it's because they're close to the poor tourists and hotels and that's how they survive. I will not return to this restaurant . . . ever . . . and I will not recommend it to anyone visiting. They need to do a serious overhaul on their food preparation skills.
Man does this place remind me of a restaurant I once worked at...Like 22 years ago! The waiters wear goofy looking jackets, the stars on the ceiling look like something my kids would put on their walls, the layout with the live fishtank and tables scattered about the restaurant without proper division is quite quaint. Quaint as in quaint in the 80's.
Moving onto the food. Hmmm, authentic Chinese? Not quite, not bad but really white-washed. This place wouldn't cut-it in Vancouver, in Victoria with all the Caucasian patrons that were in there on a Friday night it'll survive ( but for how long I wonder?).
The waiter cracked a few jokes, he filled our tea and waters regularly, offered food suggestions, delivered and cleared dishes quickly, there's no complaints here.
I can't recommend you eating here, there must be better Chinese places in Chinatown?
We haven't been to Basilico for a little while - diners are worn out by the HST, what does .05 look like and the economy in general. You have to do something to treat yourself every now and then. We had such a wonderful time, great service and great food. We tried the Marco Polo pasta and one of their fabulous pizzas. Everything was perfect and great value....I understand they're coming out with some terrific specials in January so treat yourself!!!
I love the food at Delicados. It is always fresh, healthy, and very flavourful. We dine in sometimes as well as taking out food other times. The staff are very sensitive to special requests, especially concerning allergies. We always enjoy our food and service from Delicados, and will return many times!
After a week of dining at all the touristy places, this Pub was such a breath of fresh air. Although not really - they had a real, honest to god wood fire going in the fireplace and you could smell the wood burning. And I guess that's the point of this place - it's authentic, it's real. It's not like the other four restaurants I ate at this week. They were all cutesie, tourist BS joints, with cutesie tourist meals. I walked in and the server asked if I wanted a menu - and offered that the special was a burger and a local beer for $12.50, taxes in. I skipped the menu and was not left wanting. The burger was huge - huge - and appropriately cooked. A large portion of fries, a large salad with no skimping on the ingredients and a pint of local lager. For $12.50, for god's sake! Taxes in!
You know, the way this site rates places, I'd give Garrick's Head a "solid" rating across the board - because that's the best rating I think a pub could have. Honest, straight-forward, solid. But that would be 3/5, and you'd go to one of the poncey tourist dives instead. If you must, go to the rest of them - but save a night for Garrick's Head. There's no pretense here, and it's well worth the while.
Food: Having eaten here all of once, it was decent, clean, nutritious, generous portions - no fault at all. They did the burger, salad and fries perfectly.
Service: She didn't fuss over me, but the server too was what I'd call solid: Do you want to look at the menu, or do you want what I'm recommending you have? I appreciated that. She - and the Pub - deserved the tip.
Value: All week, I've paid $6.50 a pint for local beer. $7.50 by the time taxes were in. So $12.50, taxes in, for all of the above? I'm not sure how they do it and break even. Exceptional value. Incredible value.
Ambiance: Delightfully, refreshingly, NOT touristy. Real. Appropriate. It's a pub. Not a dressed-up-North-American-version-of-what-an-English-pub-might-be-if-it-were-on-television, but a pub. No pretense, real food.
Garrick's looks to seat around 40. The crowd was mixed while I was there, about half full - 20-somethings, perhaps the college crowd, a couple artistic types, three middle aged guys with beers...just a decent place to hang out.
A note to the traveller: Garrick's is not easy to find. They do not have a storefront on Government St, although that's their address. Coming in off Government, you go through a building lobby and wonder if you took the wrong turn - I took two tries to find it. Don't go without the address, and pay close attention. There's only one sign hanging on Government Street. But it was dark, windy and raining when I went out - so that didn't help.
If you're visiting, and you're tired of the tourist stuff, treat yourself to one real meal in downtown Victoria. Go to Garrick's.
I just came back from my first visit to Sizzling Tandoor, located where the Maharaja used to be. I will definitely go back.
They have a menu (although I didn't look at it so I don't know the price range), but our group all decided to choose the buffet option -- with tax it came to $13.44 each.
It was very good. There aren't a huge selection of dishes in the buffet - maybe 8 or 10 lunch items plus salads and desserts - but I didn't feel like I needed anything else. There was butter chicken, tandoor chicken, a lentil dish, curried potatoes, and a few other items. My first plate was a tiny bite of each item except the tandoor chicken because I was afraid it would be too spicy for me, and then I went back for more of everything that I had chosen the first time. My friends said the chicken wasn't too spicy after all, but I was very happy with the dishes I chose.
The servers were very good at keeping our water refilled, our dirty plates cleared, and fresh naan whenever we wanted more.
Great curry dishes and very friendly & knowledgable staff! We've been going here for at least 5 years and it's been a wonderful mainstay. We usually do takeout, partly because the interior is tiny and often full. And guess what? It's actually open on Sunday afternoons while the rest of Victoria's culinary offerings switch to their answering machines. I also feel good about supporting a small operation in which you can easily speak to the person preparing your meal ;-)
2 hours for order to arrive - after being told the 1 hour wait (which is bad enough) over the phone. When phoned to ask where order was, was told it was a busy night - order will be there in 5 or 10 minutes....30 minutes later dinner arrived. This is the third and last time I will order from here. Last order they forgot parts of the order - but after a 1 hour wait that time we didn't bother phoning to wait another hour for the rest of our order. Not worth the money - don't waste your time!
I used to order from here a lot on rainy or lazy days. The dish that has been keeping me going back is their Tom Ka Gai , a sweet and spicy soup with mushrooms, herbs, chicken and coconut milk. Normally the Pad Thai is ok, but this time they had new packaging that seemed bigger than what they used to use. They seemed to add more noodles to compensate but didn't add any more sauce so it was bland and disappointing.
I do not plan to order in from them again but I will still be stopping in for soup.
Ordered Chicken Teriyaki, Sunomono Salad and California Rolls. The rolls were great, the salad ok, but the chicken in the chicken teriyaki was very tough and overcooked.
I've ordered Udon soup in the past and the noodles were overdone but I liked the taste of the broth. I imagine if you're eating in the restaurant itself it would be a lot better.
The service was speedy and friendly, and the fact that they have debit at your door is a plus.
