The view is nice and if you don't mind the noise it's fun to watch the float planes come in and out. Unfortunately I found the food and service to be pretty sub standard.
Our poutine was cold - the fact that it was delivered so soon after ordering should have been a tip-off that it had been sitting around. When we told the waitress about it all she did was say "Oh really? - no effort to do anything about it.
We ordered a pitcher of Mojitos which were the worst I have ever had - tasted like it was made with some kind of packaged mix, yuck.
Then we ordered some wings - half plain and half BBQ. I was told we would be charged 50 cents for ordering 2 types of wings. I asked our server if she could waive this on account of the bad poutine and she said "It's not at my discretion."
So we ate our wings - at least they were hot., then decided we'd go spend our money somewhere with decent food and drinks and better service. I got the bill and sure enough there was the 50 cent charge for getting 2 types of wings. I asked our server if I had ordered only BBQ wings, would I be charged 50 cents to put the sauce on them, seeing as all they did was put BBQ sauce on half our plain wings. This was too much for her poor brain to comprehend and all she could spit out was "It's not at my discretion!" Needless to say, the 50 cents came out of her tip.
I wouldn't recommend Flying Otter to anyone - other than the location it has nothing going for it and it seems they are coasting on the fact that it's a nice spot.
The Blue Fox is still popular for all the right reasons. Please lower the music volume though. The breakfast lost a bit of the love it once had, just enough to notice. All the staff are quite friendly. I also noticed the effort they make to to keep things tidy, especially the bathrooms! Just please lower the music and add a touch more love to the menu items!
My ladyfriend and I ate dinner here (the Broadmead Romeo’s) on Sunday Aug 28th. The food (their roast lamb special) and the service were both good, and their live patio bunny (Romeo) very cute. The problem came when we drank only half of our bottle of wine and wanted to take the rest of it with us (since we were driving, as are most of their customers). Our server told us that we could not do that. We knew that the BC law was changed quite a while ago to allow customers to take away their unfinished bottles, but she said no, they do not allow that, and after checking with her manager, the answer was still no. The manager offered to charge us for only half a litre (about $19) rather than the whole 750 ml bottle (about $29). Rather than create a scene by picking up the bottle and walking out, we accepted her offer (being charged for ½ litre rather than the ½ bottle we drank) and left very unhappy about the whole thing, and will never go back.
From our inital greeting by the owner, Greg Hays to the aperizers, wine selection, main course and finally the cheese plate our experience was a culinary treat that stands as our best dinning experience in Victoria.
Off the beaten path, a 15 minute walk from the town center, Cafe Brio is a rustic Italian oasis sandwiched tightly between non nondescript buildings. The front patio encased in creeping vines beckons you in. In our conversation with Greg we learned the restaurant was built to his a co-owner Silvia Marcolini's design some 20 years ago during the biggest snow Victoria has ever seen.
Its high ceiling, earth tones and subtle lighting transport you immediately back to an Italian tratoria. The atmosphere is "vivacious" reflective of its name "Brio" and its owners. Chef Luarie Munn has created a superb menu of fresh ingredients from local farms sure to please knowledgeable foodies.
Many of the servers have worked at Cafe Brio for over a decade and are very knowledgable of the food and wine parings. Our server suggested a Querciabella Chianti which proved to be an excellent choice. Both Greg and Silvia visit Italy yearly to bring back new ideas and interesting wines.
We started with 2 stuffed olives followed by an antipasta selection that include a fantastic Boudin Noir blood sausage and a chicken liver parfait pate both homemade. We then both had the pasta Bolognese which was perfectly cooked al dante. We finshed with a cheese tray of Farm House Cheddar and La Baquette de Kerneval (french cow).
All in all a fantastic expereince and a "must visit" if you're in Victoria.
Came here last night with seven other friends for dinner just before 5pm. When we arrived we were just about the only diners in the entire restaurant. We found a table and sat down to look over the menu.
We all ordered the same thing, more or less, from their "special before 5:30pm" menu for $14.99. The deal includes soup or caesar salad and then an option of either a starter like calamari or you can choose to have dessert instead of the starter and then your main dish. The starter or dessert option is were everything went sideways but more on that later.
The food, in my opinion, was very very good. Usually when you order these "deals" you get very small portions however my caesar salad was a full on portion, it was very tasty, fresh, and just the right amount of dressing. My order of Chicken Parmigiana was equally as good. A big plate, nice and hot with two very big pieces of chicken smothered in an excellent pasta sauce and just the right amount of cheese on the dish.
I was very impressed with my main meal. Not so impressed with my option of the chocolate cake as it was a little on the dry side.
Now to the situation that almost ruined the nice meal. Our waitress , for some reason that we can't understand, delivered the dishes for everyone at different times. Four of us had been served and delivered our main dish and actually finished before the other's had been delivered theirs. We aren't talking five or ten minutes here, we are talking at least thirty minutes or more. So there we are, the people served first actually sitting there with a completed meal of Chicken Parmigiana before our other friends even had their first bite of their main meal, the exact same thing. No real explanation from our waitress who at this point wasn't the most attentive, a request for water took much longer than it really needed to be.
I was going to give service a 1 but the manager saved the evening in the end. We asked to talk to the manager and she came over and explained to us that she didn't really know what the mix up was but was trying to figure out what happened. She was very sympathetic , apologized for the mix up and made everything right by giving us a good discount on the bill.
We understand that stuff happens sometimes and mix ups can occur but really appreciate the way they handled it. This is what customer service is all about and because of the way they handled it we will all definitely be back to Macaroni Grill.
ordered "tuna roll" from the menu... at pick up, they made a larger 8pc version that wasn't on their website menu, charged 68% more money for only 25% more food (2pcs). rip off !!! if you say "tuna roll" i think they should clarify with you if you don't specify size. the smaller one is first on the menu which again is not the one they have posted. ridiculous. sushi was completely average. if they had given the right order i would have said this place is a good value.
The Yokohama is located on Blanshard Street, just across from the Royal Theatre (close to the Court building). It is incredibly busy and service suffers on nights when there is a popular concert at the Royal, so it is good to check out the Theatre website first. If it's a concert night, come at 5 p.m. or at 7:30 p.m. in order to avoid the worst of the crowd.
This restaurant is an oft-overlooked but excellent dining experience. While you can order from the menu, the $23.95 all-you-can-eat dinner option (offered Tuesday through Saturday) is a very inexpensive way to have a variety of items at minimal cost. A very important distinction: this is NOT a buffet where things are laid out and you help yourself, not knowing how long it has been sitting; it is all-you-can-eat, which means you order as much as you want and it is made fresh.
There is a wide selection of "kitchen" items, including appetizers (the tempura sauce is excellent), a la carte items (especially the chicken teriyaki), tofu & noodles (don't miss the agedashi tofu) such as agedashi tofu), and soups/salads (the miso soup and sunomono salad are highly recommended). The broths and sauces are excellent, and that is so important. Given how much soy sauce I use, a nice ending is ice cream (I like to end on a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of vanilla).
There is a reasonable selection of sushi items, including cones, rolls, nigiri (fish on a small ball of rice), and sashimi (fish without rice). The sushi menu is somewhat limited, featuring spicy or plain salmon or tuna or BBQ salmon skin, as well as items of more appeal to the sushi novice such as california (avacado and fake crab), cucumber, avacado, and tempura prawn. Recent additions include flying fish roe (good) and chicken or beef teriyaki (kind of boring, but "safe" for sushi novices).
In terms of ambiance, they have nice, appropriate decor for a Japanese restaurant. The music is not always fitting, and they do broadcast hockey games and the like on their big screen TV which you may consider a plus or a minus (if you don't want to see it, there are tables that don't have view of the TV).
Please take your friends with you, because it's hard to find places where you can have a good amount of Japanese food without running up large bills. This is an excellent place to get sushi, but is not near Chinatown so tends to be overlooked. I would be very disappointed if Yokohama went under because it truly is the best place to go for reasonably-priced but good quality Japanese food in Victoria. It may not compare as well with the best that Vancouver or Richmond have to offer, but in our small market it's a great place to go.

I lived in Victoria from 2006-2008 and went to Beacon Hill Park all the time with family. Yesterday we went after so many years and while waiting for our ride, thought we'd get something from Beacon Drive-In. I was shocked by the attitude the blonde waitress there gave me and my little brother! She handed our orders to us through the window and just walked away and was glaring at us from another window, this girl needs to learn manners not only in a work place, but life itself! So disturbing that people working in customer service are so arrogant and rude. I've worked in customer service for over 5 years and always do my best to please the customer, yet this girl didn't even smile or say one word to us! If anyone knows an e-mail address I can send my complaint to, please let me know! I don't let things like this go easy, she was acting like this to everyone, honestly hope she gets fired and Beacon Hill In steps it up with their employees!
Well, The Bent Mast has certainly changed, without becoming a stranger. The sign outside states that the ghosts didn't help put out the fire, but perhaps they have been whispering into management's ear and helping to effect a change for the better. The food quality and cooking have vastly improved. The staff has -by and large- remained the same and the atmosphere is a happy one. It's always been an eclectic, place catering to a client base that stretches from 6 - 60 or beyond. Keep up the good work people and ghosts. I had a great time when I was there.
I am happy there's new carpets and the whole place smells a lot better and is clean. It a great place to go back to.
If you like the 'red' coloured sweet & sour sauce that 99.9% of other Chinese restaurants use, you won't find it here. The first time I ordered S&S boneless pork months ago, I was disappointed the sauce was a colourless, cornstarchy, oversweet mess. I should of returned it but gave them the benefit of the doubt, thinking they had a new cook or he just forgot to add the red food colouring to the sauce. Recently, I phoned in and reordered the Chow Mein, Beef & Broccoli and S&S Pork dishes. I explained to them about my past order and that I wasnt happy with it. The fellow said their sauce is always red and I must be mistaken. So I told him I would reorder but emphasized my concern about the sauce in question. I picked up the order and was totally pissed off after opening up the S&S Pork. White sauce! Yuck! That went directly into the garbage. Now, after two times of ordering it here, that will be my last time ! Either the cook is colour blind or thats the way they always prepare it. Sweet & Sour Lean Pork can be a good dish if prepared properly & consistently like other Chinese restaurants in the city. I definitely will stay with Mings where they have the best Chinese Food in the city.
We love the atmosphere in this place. The outside terrace is a bit noisy but thats because its on Yates Street. The service was a bit slow but efficient. We did enjoy the food a bit more than another competitive Italian restaurant just across the street and down the alley (wont mention any names). Fiamos seemed to be a bit more authentic. The food could use a bit of work to bring out that real Italian flavour but all in all it made for a nice meal and a nice evening with my significant other.
My wife and myself are great eggs benny's fan. We have eaten at literally every restaurant, cafe, bistro and you name it in Victoria (as well as many in the US and Europe) and have yet to find as good as a selection as those served at Willies (think the have 6 or 7 kinds) and none as tasty as those we eat at Willies. For those of you that like the tradition American version of benny's on a Engish muffin forget it. I was pleasantly please to see this wasnt the case at Willies. Theirs are served on house baked brioche and they even had one on their in house corn bread. Delicious! The eggs are free run and were poached to our liking. The hollandaise was obviously prepared in the kitchen and was not a purchased product which seems to be the case everywhere we have tried benny's in Victoria. In all it was outstanding. I have tried the French toast at Willies before and it too was amazing and the bread was the brioche. I am really addicted to this place. Love the food, love the decor (the outside patio is a gem to sit in in the summer) and the staff is great. The food can be a bit slow when there are line ups at the door but when it comes out its worth the wait. We are also so happy to see that Willies has now gone to an all day breakfast. Smart on their part and a great for their customers. We will be back... and back.. and back. Yummy!
A couple of friends and myself stopped here for a meal and a few pints recently. We were suprised by their new and improved menu to choose from. The service was much better than the last visit and the food quality has also improved and prices are o.k. too. We were all pleased with our meals along with the friendly service. The new manager was especially nice. Now that summer is finally here, we plan on sitting out on their patio more often. The bus stop is conveniently just around the corner on Menzies St. Cheers!
Lets get this straight, this is an "English Style" pub, this means you order/pay for everything at the Bar, if this isn't the way you operate you may be disappointed.
If you like good beer and above average pub-faire, I highly recommend this place, I go at least once a week for a pint and a meal and always come home with a growler of delicious beer.
I love the gelato but could not believe that you don't recycle the plastic cups you serve it in! I can't imagine how many go into the garbage through the summer...what waste & neglect for the environment. I won't be going back until a change is made to your recycling policy! Thanks.
After a long plane ride and looking at many reviews and asking lots of people around the Victoria area the place to go and get a fantastic meal was Ferris`s. Either the people in Victoria have never eaten seafood or do not know what seafood is much less good seafood. After getting seated the wait was extremely long, I order the Pacific Rim . The bowl was huge, and that was it. It was suspose to contain prawns, scallops, and other shell fish, with linguine mixed with a sauce. What I got was a bowl of tough noodles, two shrimp that were about 40 ct. and three pieces of scallop the size of my little finger. The shrimp would be small bait at the best. The dish had almost no flavor and the price was unreal. I am 56 and of all the places I have ever ate this one was the worst and one of the most expensive. To the people who wrote a positive review on this place all I can say is you have never eaten seafood, if you want to eat real seafood try south Texas,
I went for the Tacones, a good choice, they were fantastic. I tried the deep fried pickles, they were ok! Probably wouldn't try them again. The line us was a bit long but moced fast, foid was hot
HOT.! The fries were good, classic. But the Tacones are incredible, get them into ya ASAP.
Wow..Tasty.! Great breakfast last weekend, fast and delicious. This place really puts heart into their food and the ingredients taste like they were sourced as close to the kitchen as possible.. (FRESH)! They gave vegetarian optons that taste awesome to a carnivore.! Great, friendly staff. A small room that can get quite crowded, you may get a weird table and you often have to wait on weekends. But what the hell, it's worth it. Take a couple of hours and enjoy a scrumptious meal w friends or family!!
We went here for dinner on Saturday night and overall, enjoyed our experience. I think this place used to be a Chinese restaurant for a long time. They have a large parking lot surrounding the building making access easy.
We ordered the appy platter to start. Then we ordered a few entrees to share including the butter chicken, curry lamb, gobi aloo and paneer spinach. All the dishes were pretty good although I had a couple minor quibbles. The lamb was a little tough and all the dishes seemed a little on the sweet side, but overall the food was enjoyable. The value and pricing was what you'd expect with all mains in the 10-15 dollar price range.
The service was attentive and got the job done but some of the bussing staff could have been a little more effective by grabbing the plates to be removed rather than asking us to pass them to her.
Overall, we had a pleasant time and I would return when in the mood for Indian food in Victoria.
I went here for lunch the other day and enjoyed my experience. It was a beautiful day so we sat out on the patio. They apparently only had McRae's lager on tap which seemed a little limited for a tap selection but the beer was good.
I ordered a chicken burrito and thought it was pretty tasty and a good value. The service was attentive and always made sure we were well taken care of without being intrusive. Overall, I would definitely return when in the neighbourhood and wanting good bistro food in a pub style environment.
