Zap Thai is a small, family run Thai restaurant.
I have to admit that although I get seriously angry every time I eat here, I continue to return again and again because the food is so delicious! It's a love-hate relationship, really. I agree with the other review that it takes FOREVER to get your food in this place and the servers are either incompetent and/or indifferent. However, the cooks are clearly doing something right because this place is always busy and I'm addicted to the coconut soup and the pad thai. I think it's kind of a "Soup Nazi" (from Seinfeld) situation where they know their food is good, so they don't even bother trying to be courteous.
I am new to the area and had heard great reviews about this little place in Esquimalt Village. Some friends and I went on a Friday night. We sat down right away despite the restaurant being fairly busy. The waitress served us water and took our order after about 20 minutes of waiting. We waited for another 30 minutes, ignored by the staff, and watched as the people who were seated after us were served their meals. When we asked about the delay, the waitress said there were a lot of take-out orders being made. 20 minutes after that ( over an hour since we'd been seated) we heard our order being read out - they hadn't even started cooking it yet!!! We were upset and went up to the chef and told him not to bother, we'd go someplace else. He didn't even apologize and we left. I was sorry not to have tried the food - which looked great - but felt we were treated with an utter lack of respect. They have lost our business and the business of our friends.
On a weekday night, 4 of us ventured into Zap Thai Cafe. I remember having read a newspaper food critic saying the food was very good. My experience would agree with that statement.
I was expecting better decor/ambience and was a little disappointed the owners didnt dress up the place more. You can tell they didnt spend too much on renovations but I can understand the costs involved in a small startup. One service of note is that they are not licensed to serve alcohol. Too bad because it would have been nice to have had a Singha (thai beer).
But overall my dinner was pleasant, the staff friendly and efficent.
