Oak Bay's favorite all day breakfast nosh, serving up Jewish delights and other breakfast favorites. Located just up from Willows beach with a fun friendly atmosphere and a great dog friendly patio! See you soon.
The previous review seems to have been written by the owners, but I am a long timer reviewer so maybe a bit more balanced. Maybe - it's your call. This is a good restaurant that keeps has reasonable prices and seems likely to do well, but it could be fantastic.
First the complaints: The front door closes very slowly so on cool days - it gets cold in there. Shivering diminishes the ambiance and the outdoor tables and chairs tease with anticipation of a summer that may, one day, actually arrive. The fruit, in place of hashbrowns, sounded oh so healthy, until it arrived and consisted of an orange slice, and 2 other very small slices of fruit. I think it might be fairer to call it a fruit garnish. I had an omelette with cheese in it, and apparently the way they cook them is to cook the egg mixture first in a small frying pan and then, when finished, place the fillings inside the omelette folded over taco style. The result was that the cheese was cold in places, and I have had better omelettes, although the filling was actually quite tasty. My wife made a similar comment with the Eggs Benny on a bagel. It was good but the bagel was a bit tougher to eat than an english muffin.
The cafe has atmosphere and certainly could charge more for its offerings. Then I would really gripe. The owners celebrate their Jewish background and make it feel very homely so it feels like more than just a cafe.
Great location in the village on Estevan and it has potential.
I eat at The Village Restaurant in Oak Bay every week. I have found the service to first class, servers are always friendly and they keep the coffee cup filled. There is varied menu of breakfast and lunch itens, all reasonably priced.
While I realize restaurant reviews are subjective, I can't help but feel the previous reviewer may have inadvertently put his review under the wrong "Village" restaurant. This dining spot is in Victoria - I understand there are places with a similar name on the Lower Mainland.
If you are in Victoria, give The Village a try - it is open 7 days a week from 8:00am to 4:00pm - I don't think you will be disappointed.
The service is VERY poor, every time I have been it takes along time before the waitresses come to the table, and they are all grumpy, never friendly, they really need to hire waitresses that at least enjoy there job. I have gone back over and over to give it a another chance but it is always is the same disappointing experience.
My husband and I just discovered this restaurant so tried it out on Sunday. It was busy but (one of the owners?) came out and acknowledged us right away and was very eager to organize everybody at the outdoor tables. He appeared to really love what he was doing. I had the cheese blintzes which were tasty but not as sweet as I prefer. It was also over $30 for both of us but all-in-all still worth it for the (almost) ocean-view and will go again.
New restaurant in Oak Bay run by two brothers. Energetic fun atmosphere just up from Willows beach. They are serving Discovery coffee which is great in my books, and the food is fresh and well cooked! They are also the only place I know of that brings in real Montreal smoked meat all the way from Montreal, and beside the traditional smoked meat sandwich they use it in some breakfasts, including an eggs benny on a real Mt. Royal bagel! Awesome!!!
