Siam Thai is a family run Thai restaurant on Fort near Wharf in scenic downtown Victoria.
We visit Siam Thai when in Victoria. They have great lunch specials and dinner is always well prepared. The Pad Thai is tasty and we also get the Cashew Chicken and Green Curry. The Satay is also a sure thing. All the food was flavored nicely and they can adjust the spice level to your liking.
Nice place for a meal in Downtown Victoria...
Went to Siam this past Friday. I have been a few times and always enjoy what is offered. On Friday my dining partner and I started with the crispy thai spriing rolls, the only disappointment of the meal. They were greasy and I thought had sort of a funky/fishy sort of taste. I'll pass on those next time.
We shared the veggie curry and veggie phad thai. Both were very good. The portion size was just right for the two of us and although I would of enjoyed a bit more heat we ordered both dishes medium. Great service, although the place was packed at around 7pm on a Friday night they found a table for us in no time and our order was taken promptly. Victoria has a few very good Thai Restaurants Siam is one of them.
We went to Siam Thai with friends for the first time in July 2007. It was her birthday and their choice of places to go. They had a reservation and we were seated within about ten minutes. I cannot tell you what was ordered only that it was all delicious. I am not from Thailand and have never visited Thailand, so I am certainly not an authority on what Thai food should taste like.
We would definitely go back.
Siam is a small restaurant near the Keg downtown. There is nothing really about the look of the restaurant that makes it stand out, but it is a good place to get some Thai food in Victoria. The portion sizes for the noodles and rice are perfect for a meal. The curries are slightly watery and could come in a larger pot size, but are otherwise delicious. The pad thai is standard, but if you love peanut sauce, you must try the Noodle Delight. The food can be a bit spicy if you're not used to Thai food and the waiters aren't the most prompt in re-filling your water glass. The seafood soup is delicious with large pieces of shrimp and the perfect blend of coconut and chilis. For dessert, finish off with a generous portion of deep-fried bananas and vanilla ice-cream; the warm sweet banana enveloped in a crispy fried shell and paired with smooth vanilla ice cream is great, but be sure to share this dessert as it is more than enough for one person.
OMG! I leave Victoria for 3 years and one of the best Thai restaurants gets sold and takes a nosedive! Siam is now owned by a Chinese couple that don't seem to care about their customers anymore. The dishes now are filled with low quality veggies and meat, the rice was bloated (too much water), and the wait staff were not food safe! The non-Thai waitress handled my glass of water by the rim & carried the jug of ice water by the spout! I didn't dare drink the water. In addition, the server didn't check to see how my meal was and refused to serve a group of 3 that walked in 15 minutes before lunch closed. I tried to address this with the manager or owner on staff but they said "so what".
I DO NOT RECCOMMEND THIS ESTABLISHMENT TO ANYONE!! It has lost all of the great things it once had. A friend of mine warned me because he worked in the kitchen a few months ago (and the staff have no food safe certification whatsoever), but I decided to try anyhow. IT WAS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. If you enjoy authentic Thai Cuisine, you are better off trying the Little Thai Place or any kitchen that you can see inside.
I must say, this was once my favorite restaurant. Great food, friendly service. But ever since they changed owners, things aren't the same. Food now is so so. Service now is not acceptable. We've had several bad experiences with this place recently. One time our simple 4 dishes took over an hour to be served. Also our waiter was rude and he had no knowlegde of the food he was serving. This ruined our evening. The owner/server did offer us a $6.50 dessert for our $90 food bill. Big wow. From now on, I'll have to go else where for my thai fix.
Me and my wife have been to Siam quite a few times now. The food is extremely good, I recommend the Pad Thai or the Cashew Nut Chicken. Although the service is a little slow, the prices are great. I have no idea what other people are talking about when they say the ambience is only 3 STARS!!!!! In my opinion, It is very nice and TRADITIONAL!!!And in reference to Kettles review, please, this is a good site, don't be racist. I happen to be Chinese I am actually hurt by your review.
In response to the previous review about respecting the family business and where they hail from... The servers are Chinese! Yes, maybe the owners are Thai, but they shouldn't hire Chinese workers and think they can still call the restaurant "authentic"! After coming back from living in Thailand, I went to Siam and spoke some Thai to the servers. No one had a clue how to speak Thai. They didn't even know khao, which means rice, and is the most basic term. My first dish I tried was the tom yum. The most famous soup from Thailand, it tasted like beef broth. The other dishes were good, but at least get the tom yum right.
If you want to support these "people and the country they hail from" then try going to Baan Thai, Sod Sai on Douglas, or even the Little Thai Place where all the kitchen staff are Thai.
the People at Siam Thai restaurant are friendly and very nice. As they are a family business i believe that shows pride for the beautiful country they hail from. the food is exceptionally good and as far as i'm concerned the food spice rating should always be at 4 LOL at least for me it is :) i look forward to dining again at this esteemed establishment. the establishment is a well deccored place of a very nicely quaint Thai Theme . ive always found their atmosphere pleasant :)
Ultimately i am a "true born" canadian who is more than willing to support these fine honorable people for the deprivation of being away from their homeland not to mention serving the public as they do and quite honorably i might add :)
Siam has really good food and friendly staff. The vegetarian paad thai is the best i have ever had. They have large protions and I would highly recomend visting this place. I was scepticle at first because i had bad experiences before at other thai restaurants but after trying siam I keep going back!
I had never had Thai food before but some friends of mine told me to try this restaurant. The tastes were out of this world and the prices were really good. The service is very quick and for the most part quite friendly. I would recommend this place to everybody.
The tom yum goong soup was very very good. The entrees were all good, but not that great. I have definitely had better thai food. Overall, it was a decent experience.
The restaurant was decorated very nicely.
I've been going to Siam for the past 7 years or so, and have to say that this is the best Thai food I've ever had. I've eaten at Thai places in Vancouver, Seattle and many others in Victoria, and every time I try another Thai restaurant there is no comparison. The place out in Sidney is quite good (Sabhai Thai) I would call it my second choice, but Siam is #1.
The food at Siam is mouthwateringly delicious. They use flat thick delicious noodles for their Phad Thai and the flavour and consistency of the sauce is perfect. They have absolutely nailed the flavour for their Phad Thai dish, it just melts in your mouth. The food is always hot and fresh, served on clean hot plates. Another favorite is the Siam Curry and again they have perfected the recipe, with the perfect amount of Bamboo shoots, peppers and perfect consistency of the curry soup. One of my favorite things is the spice-rack, available on request for free - which has 4 spicy condiments you can add to your dish (not sure what they are). You also request the spiciness of your food when you order (mild, medium or hot), but the spice rack allows you to fine tune. We always order a white rice with the Siam Curry. Although I've only tried one of the desert items, the Deep-Fried Banana (not sure what the actual menu item name is) I cannot describe how sweet and delicious this is - served with vanilla ice cream. We rarely order drinks but the Thai Ice Tea is good too.
The service at Siam is always excellent, without exception. They never let your water get empty before someone rushes over to top you off. Everyone is really friendly and polite.
The value is very good - An order of 2 dishes with rice (Phad Thai, Siam Curry and medium white rice) after all taxes and including 15% tip it works out to around $34. This will leave two people stuffed, possibly with a leftover for midnight snack. For the quality of food, this is a bargain.
The ambiance is just right. I love the brick walls and cool ceiling woodwork. They transformed a piece of Victoria history into an authentic Thai haven. They dim the lights slightly in the evening and keep the atmosphere very relaxed and calm. The restaurant always smells so damn good. My one complaint would be when you get stuck sitting next to the front entrance in the Winter months it can get cold with people constantly coming and going. This is about the only thing I could ever possibly come up with as a negative about Siam. I can't recommend this place enough, it is my favorite restaurant, hands down.
Been going to Siam for years. I was there this past weekend, everything is fantastic. The food is great, same as before. The CHINESE servers, who's been there for years (before the new owners) are fast and friendly. It's sad to see racist comment at this day in age. Check out the other restuarants in town, most sushi place are not own by Japanese people, most SUBWAYS are owned by Koreans, 90% of Tim Horton staffs are from the Philliphines. I guess it's mind over matter. Remember, Canada is a multicultural country, a melting pot of all culture...work and live as people, not as a race.
Oh, if you really really like hot & spicy like we do, just ask the server for fresh Thai chilli, they have it now, they didn't before. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We went to Siam Thai a couple of months ago. It was our first time eating there. I ordered the green curry which was not one of my favourite experiences with curry. I found it to have a slight buttery taste?? Not something that belongs in curry. My husband ordered the Siam curry which was nothing less than fantastic. I really wish I would have ordered that instead. I love the huge bowls of rice. Perfect for 2 or 3 people. I'll go back.
My family and I have been going to Siam since my son was an enfant. We were at Siam yesterday for his sixteenth birthday, it's our family's favourite restaurant. The service and food are always great. A must try is the Phad Thai and deep fried bananas with ice cream.
