The new location has been opened now for about two months or so and I have visited at least a half dozen times already. Not so sure about the ambience of the new location. It is huge, sort of cafeteria looking but I suppose your typical Japanese minimalistic space.
The food is always good, I have never been disappointed at Shiki Sushi. Try the My My My Roll or Katsu Chicken Bento Box. Always well done and tasty. The my my my roll is very nice. The Katsu chicken bento box is very large with a generous amount of chicken with a tasty sauce for dipping. I love the rice with that "brown sauce" someone else mentioned. It is a soy based sauce, salty but for my taste buds deeelish.
The owner Tony has got to be the hardest working guy in Victoria. He is always there and always greets people coming through the door with a "hello".
If you are wondering about prices since the move they have not changed. Very affordable sushi and bento boxes. The Katsu Chicken Bento box will run you about ten bucks includes chicken, rice, salad and a bit of fruit. You really can't go wrong with Shiki Sushi, it has become one of my favorites.
Sikhi Sushi is my all time favorite restaurant. The chefs are amazing. Food preparation area
is kept clean. Cleanliness is important to me. Food is always fresh, delicious and even sushi rice is done to perfection. I could eat their tuna or salmon nigiri every day! Like delivery option too. Highly recommend.
since they move location and went to blanshard, there place expanded but im guessing there not moving product. the first week they open i order from them (takeout) rainbow roll, spider roll, spicy tuna was all not fresh. so i stopped ordering from them for a few month then i order again still disappionting. i know of a few that gave up on them and now i am too. they told the owner of the non fresh food and what he can do to change that but still nothing was done. last month i order from them and there rice was mix with non cooked rice. so all my sushi that i took a bite from had a crunch to it. i just fined that there average nothing special. other may like them but i sure dont
Tried out the new location and I was a bit taken back by the decor, it's very modern, a bit cold, the ambiance, not the temperature, but very open and clean. I do not know the name of my server, but she should be employee of the month because she was quick, attentive and very funny, she had our whole table laughing.
Our orders were on the table within 10 minutes and the quality of the food was fresh and crisp. We never had to ask for refills of tea, they were right on top of that. We had someone in our group that has never had sushi before and she absolutely loved it and wants to go back for more.
It is totally worth at least checking out.
When Shiki first opened, their food and service was excellent. Then, they hired a new sushi chef, who's still there, and has the speed of a tortoise. The problem is that he's still there. One day, we were about to faint from hunger, and it took over an hour for the food to arrive. That's simply not acceptable. The manager's wife didn't care. Nobody cared. The last time, the food came, and the sushi well took over 30 minutes. It's just not acceptable. They need to fire the sushi chef, and hire someone who has skill & speed. This is a restaurant, for pity's sake. You can't have people waiting an hour for their food, and then leaving unhappy. I won't be eating there again, and we were their biggest supporters and among their first customers. They simply don't care, and I've had enough.
This "Japanese" restaurant serves very peculiar Japanese food. . No Japanese would think of putting brown tepid gravy on white rice but that is how they served it to me in a tempura bento box and it was not the kind of sauce one would find in "curry rice". It was terrible and made the rice inedible. I have lived and worked in Tokyo for years and have eaten in Japanese restaurants throughout the world and this meal was hands down the strangest "Japanese" bento I have ever had in my life. The tempura was decent but I will not be back and this experience has made me far more careful about dining in so called Japanese restaurants in Victoria.
I often get the Shiki Sushi lunch special, a large bento box, that they have daily for $6.95. It has soup, salad (the dressing is really tangy and good, I found) rice and a generous helping of chicken. You get a lot of food, and I find it quite tasty. In reference to the strange brown sauce, that is quite traditional, you'll find the same thing in Japanese Village. Incidentally, I think it is quite delicious. I have to concur on one issue: The service. Slow to have your order taken and slow to receive your food.
I have been to Shiki Sushi over a dozen times, and have never had a bad experience. Their spinach salad with sesame dressing is the best I have had anywhere. Other favourites are the Yam roll, Veggie roll, and a Shiki Original (I think), the Mexican Roll (tempura prawn, spicy mayo, tomato & avocado). The ambiance could be improved on, but it is on par with most other Japanese restaurants in Victoria. I find the prices to be within range of most other places also. I've tried many other sushi places in town, but keep coming back to Shiki. Definitely try it.
What can I say ... it was just lousy. We went in at lunch and it was busy, but no line-ups or anything. Were seated right away, but it took almost 15 mins for our order to be taken. Prices were a bit higher than some other sushi places in the area, but the restaurant interior looked clean and well kept.
The shabu shabu soup was not good. Tasted like Campbell's Chicken noodle soup without the noodles and some green onion thrown in. Sushi was expensive for what you got and was only mediocre. Ordered a bento box with beef teriyaki, salad, fruit and rice. Dressing on salad was so bland it tasted like water, and teriyaki sauce was a bit too strong/sweet. Strange brown sauce poured over rice that I had to push to the side.
Overall? Better try somewhere else.
I've been here a couple of times, and the sushi is pretty decent. Better value than some of the other Japanese restaurants in Victoria. I do have a couple of bones to pick, though. 1: The California rolls have egg in them. I don't know if this is just a Victoria thing because it's happened to me at Azuma too, but since when do California rolls have egg in them? Very bizarre. 2: The regular bento boxes are small and what's with the weird sauce on the rice? This also happened to me at Azuma. I've been to many sushi restaurants in my lifetime and ordered many a bento box, but never have one of the compartments consisted solely of "rice with sauce similar to the salad dressing". Perhaps these are just some stylistic choices made for financial reasons or just to be "different"? Anyway, the restaurant seems clean, service is pretty quick, and prices are fairly reasonable. Solid sushi restaurant.
I am a very picky person about where I eat, and this is the BEST sushi place in all of Victoria. The service is extremely fast, my bento lunch comes in maximum 10 mins, and the cost is greatly affordable and proportional. This sushi resturant has amazing staff and if your looking for the place to eat, this is it.
