San Remo is a Greek and Mediterranean restaurant on Quadra near Hillside.
I was very disappointed with my online ordering experience yesterday. I ordered 3 items: the $7 jalapeno appy, the $8 eggplant appy and the $17 souvlaki entree (for 2 meat skewers). 2 minutes later I get a call from the restaurant to inform me that the online souvlaki listing was wrong: it only comes with one skewer. And when the order arrived, I was charged $9.50, $8.95 and $17.95 respectively for my 3 items (and the Greek salad had no dressing on it. When I called to discuss the price discrepancies, I was told that they were not going to honour their online prices. They lost $200+/year of my business for $4.40 - I hope it was worth it.
San Remo's used to be such a great little spot; what happened! Our last encounter was pretty much a total disaster. If you are making a reservation, look out. They don't seem to understand what a reservation is. We were told, once we got there that they "don't really take reservations" but that we were welcome to wait. Hardly feasible given that we had four guests coming. The food was late, cold, not as described on the menu and over priced.
The front line staff was friendly enough, but they just had too little to work with.
Pity. Used to be a nice place. Definitely off my list; there are so many other places to try in Victoria.
Took the kids there and thought it was a bit pricier than expected so asked for shared meals. This must have irritated the kitchen as they clearly dug around to find the toughest mangiest old ribs and leathery chicken possible. The ribs were tougher than old shoe leather and tasted worse.
To her credit - the waitress asked what the problem was and offered a complementary desert. The chocolate mousse cake with dollops of whipped cream was good and other diners seemed to have edible food but this probably ranks as my worst dining experience in Victoria. Pity, as the decoration was good but I think it was still very pricey for the location. I cannot recommend this restaurant unfortunately.
Places in this location went under for years, until these guys came along and made a very successful restaurant. The food is generally good, and the San Remo Pasta used to be outstanding (drenched in sauce, loaded with artichokes, mushrooms and shrimp), until something changed (the recipe? the cook? the ingredients?) and over the years, it never fully recovered. One thing they haven't changed is the Chocolate Cheesecake, which, when covered with fresh whipped cream and slivered almonds, can easily compete with any dessert in town. It's worth a visit just for the cheesecake.
Dined there last night. It was just okay. Not great, not bad. Waitress was a little 'flakey' couldn't remember what wife ordered, brought red wine instead of the white ordered, forgot to put shrimp on caesar salad as requested. My order, Mousaka was returned because of the miniscule portion served. (I have this dish at San Remo before and last night's portion was half what it usually is.) Overall, not up to the standard I had remembered from previous visits.
