Sam's is a high energy Victoria landmark, that has been serving generous helpings of good, wholesome natural foods for over 25 years. Famous for huge sandwiches, soups, salads, fresh baked goods, espresso bar, and local beers, Sam's boasts a menu with something for everyone.
Yes, Sam's Deli is a good place to go for lunch if you are near the waterfront. The food is good, made-to-order and portions are substantial, with reasonable prices. They are renowned for their shrimp (with or without avocado) sandwiches that are delicious and the soups are hearty and filling, especially good to cut the chill of the inner harbour breeze. Would I rate this as exceptional? No, while the fare is good and it's an interesting place to people watch, I am not taken with the cafeteria style of the restaurant and having at times, a lengthy wait. If you've got some time to kill and aren't part of the lunch rush, you don't have to worry as much, but still, there's something to be said about table service.
I've been eating sandwiches at Sam's Deli for over 20 years: first when I lived in Victoria as a university student in the 1980's and now whenever I come to visit or see friends. Love the roast beef sandwich. All their sandwiches are stacked high and the soups are tasty and filling. Self-service makes this a quick, inexpensive place to grab lunch when on the go in the inner harbour area of Victoria. Used to be a favourite place of our former PM Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
