Well, if you eat Vietnamese often enough you know that Pho is a wonderful brothy soup with rice noodles, and a variety of additions, be it beef and vegetables or tripe for the more adventuresome.
This little place is hidden on Antique Row. You would miss it if you didn't know it was there. (isn't that always the way the great ones are?).
We went for lunch, JJ"s Wonton Noodle house was closed for renovations so we stumbled on to this establishment.
We were greeted promptly and seated at a large table. Tea was served right away, and although the place was full the food trickled from the kitchen one dish by one dish carried by the waiter with immediacy.
They obviously have busy lunches here so if you're going, get there before the rush. Apparently open for dinner also and can't wait to go back.
We started with Spring Rolls, 4 larger ones sliced in half on the plate, a great starter for two and it was generous and flavourful.
Next we tried the Deep fried prawns, you can have half dozen or full - very nice presentation with a chili dipping sauce. (NOTE: these are not the overbattered prawns that one receives in a Chinese restaurant but lightly / delicately battered and not overcooked in the least)
For the main I had the Pho Tai, a wonderful soup with rice noodles, med rare thin sliced beef that was cooked by the time I got to it, and very tasty broth.
My friend had the Bun Ho, Beef with Rice Noodles cooked with lemon grass and was impressed with the great flavours. This was not a soup but more of a bowl. Tasty!
Service was great comparative to other Pho restaurants in this neighbourhood, and it was impressive to see smiling faces on the staff that seemed to genuinely enjoy what they do.
The restaurant seemed exceptionally clean and that speaks volumes.
I would not hesitate to recommend this place anyone - we were in and out in an hour ( parking meters on Fort as you know are 90 minutes) and actually were happy that we've found a new fave. ( Don't worry, we still love JJ's Wonton House - but theres room for both! )
