BEST PRIME RIB in TOWN
Stopped by on a Sunday Night to find Ric's Grill has Prime Rib Special on Sundays...talk about fantastic luck! Ordered a 10oz cut which ended up being just under $20. My partner had the smallest cut which was only $16. It was amazing.
Our server, who was incredibly knowledgeable, informed us that the prime rib is cooked right before service and we could taste the difference this makes. We were advised they using Sterling Silver Beef which is a step up from the other steak place "up the road". Our Prime Ribs came with yorkshire pudding, potatoes, perfectly cooked vegetables, jus and horseradish. DONE RIGHT! Another big winner for our visit was Caesars on Special! Our two favourite things at a fabulous price! the perfect Sunday Meal.
If anyone is looking for a great wine to enjoy with their Steak, we had the Desert Hills Mirage with our mains and it was outstanding. If you see it on ANY wine list, it's a solid choice with red meat. Thanks Rics, we'll be back!
Had dinner there with hubby and the kids.
The food is great at this steakhouse chain. I especially enjoy the prime rib. It was cooked exactly as I requested. It was served with a generous amount of veggies which were lightly steamed and were a little al dente (just the way I like them). There was a good kids menu and the children had a choice of entree, side, drink and dessert for only $9.99!! We choose the BBQ chicken, rice, Shirley Temple and Chocolate cake for each kid (excellent deal!).
The service was okay. Our waiter was pleasant enough - but not very knowledgable. I had a question about the kids menu (it listed the aforementioned $9.99 deal, but also stated that a kid's entree is free with purchase of an adult entree and suggested some special program. Our waiter was not aware of it, so I pointed it out on the menu. He went away and came back and stated he didn't know what the offer was. Huh - Mr. Waiter - that would be YOUR JOB to know about the special offer as advertised on the menu! I pushed the point and politely asked him to find someone who DID know what the offer was about. I female waitress was nearby and clarified that this offer was for Mondays only (this information was not stated on the printed menu). I thanked her for the clarification. Furthermore, I had a coupon for a free appy (up to $10 off). The waiter took my coupon before I ordered. When we got the bill, I checked it over and noted that he neglected to take off the amount for our appy. I went up to the front, explained to the same nice waitress who clarified our previous inquiry that the waiter took my coupon, but did not discount the item. She kindly adjusted our bill.
My husband handed the waiter (when he returned) the adjusted bill and his credit card. When the waiter returned with the credit card statement he said, "I had the appy taken off because you had a coupon" Ummm - Mr. Waiter.... I HAD THE BILL ADJUSTED because YOU forgot. I double checked the bill - yep - it was as I had it adjusted. Needless to say - his tip was a mere 10% (I usually tip between 15 and 20%).
I will return to this location again. It is on government street at a convenient location to the inner harbour. I like having prime rib when I visit victoria (I just wish someone would also serve it with Yorkshire pudding!!).
The restaurant is beautiful and looks really up-scale. I was quite excited about the food. I ordered the top sirloin since they seem to be known for their steaks. The complimentary bread was amazing- warm and melted in my mouth, yum. The caesar salad was also very tasty. Then came the main course...oh boy. Everything was cold, the steak was overdone and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were also kind of burnt and tasted terrible. I was so disappointed. The server was nice enough, but the food came out so slowly. I would not come back here, waste of money.
Went to Ric's for the dine around promotion and had the steak and prawns. The first steak was inedible due to grisel and being very under cooked (asked for medium rare). I then asked for medium in my replacement, and it was also very under cooked. I didn't ask for a third. Simply put, I dropped some decent coin and I will not return.
I went to Ric's a year ago with my daughter as we both like Prime Rib and I had enjoyed
it there before. This was the worst Prime Rib I had ever had. The first clue was the au jou
was covering the piece of meat and not on the side. The meat was gray colored and tough.
It was clearly not fresh and an older piece that should not have been served. Ours were both the
same. I told the waitress and one meal was deducted from the bill with an apology. I was reluctant to
go back again but went there last week and selected a table for a special dinner event. I called the day before to advise that our reservation would need to be changed from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.. The girl located the
reservation in the book and advised it was done. When we arrived this Friday at 7p.m. my name and
reservation were crossed out in the book. Yes, they had a table for us but what would have happened
if they were full ?? Anyways, it appeared that the girl I phoned DID NOT change the reservation time
although she said she did. Very disappointing as we requested a certain table. My partner's steak was
overcooked and not at all medium, like she ordered. The girl on duty apologized and gave us a free dessert.
We would not have ordered dessert anyways. I think that Ric's is not as good as when they first opened
and we will NOT RETURN again. There are many other restaurants that are more consistant for the price.
We had a coupon and wanted to try the restaurant. There were two of us and we arrived around 6:00pm, on a Friday night, and were the only patrons in the restaurant. The ambiance is very nice, and we were seated near the window overlooking Government Street. We started with drinks; I had a lime margarita, my partner had a beer. The margarita (which cost about $7.00) was the worst I've ever had - it had a very strong lime cordial flavour. I told the waitress that the drink did not taste very good; she just laughed and said "yes, the bartented uses a very strong lime cordial". I decided to try a martini (which also cost about $7.00); it was okay but very small.
We started with fresh baked bread with butter which was very nice. We ordered the crispy calamari appetizer ($11.00) to start; it tasted okay but the calamari was unusually small pieces on top of a bed of lettuce (not enough for two people to share). Once we started eating our appetizer, we noticed fruit flies at our table (not a good sign). Our main meal arrived shortly after, and was quite a dissapointment. I ordered the mixed seafood grill ($31+) which consisted of salmon, halibut, scallops and tiger prawns. This came with fresh seasonal vegetables and a twice baked stuffed potatoe. My partner ordered the Barcelona Halibut ($27+) with Barcelona sauce and feta cheese; this also came with fresh seasonal vegetables and oven baked potatoes. The fresh seasonal vegetables consisted of one sprig of broccoli, a couple of julien carrots and some white vegetable that we have no idea what it was (tasted like a cross between and apple and turnip); my partner did not even eat his. My mixed seafood grill was over cooked (very dry fish) and the scallops (2) and tiger prawns (3) were on a skewer and drowning in lemon pepper. My partner's Barcelona Halibut was mushy and flavourless and could not taste the feta cheese (he did not even finish the meal). The meal ended up costing well over $100.00 plus $11.00 HST and the tip. By the time we left the restaurant at 7:00pm, there were only two other tables with partrons on a Friday night. Despite the food not being very good, the service was good and staff friendly. Needless to say, we will not be going back to this restaurant.
My wife and I went for brunch and ordered eggs benedicts. Our meals took quite awhile to arrive >30 minutes and we were the first customers of the day. My wife's eggs benedict was fine (nothing outstanding) and my eggs were almost hard boiled. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she told me that they come out different ways. I told her that I would like them similar to my wife's (which were a bit more runny) and what I would consider typical of an eggs benedict (especially a $16 eggs benedict!). I took the potatoes off so I could eat with my wife and a few minutes later the benedict came back, incredibly runny (soupy) and on the same plate with the same english muffin and steak meat that was in the original. Service was slow, all in all I would not go back there, especially with those prices.
Like the title states, this place is pretty much a carbon copy of the Keg: expensive big steaks. However, that doesn't mean this place isn't worth visiting. The service is very good and the ambiance is classy. We ordered the prime rib, ribeye, and the warm spinach salad. Like the Keg, you should stick to what they know best: steak. The warm salad was drenched in olive oil and balsalmic vinegar, mushy pecans, and overly large pieces of under-done roasted garlic. Not a good choice. The prime rib and the steaks however were excellent: tender, juicy, and made just to order. Highly recommend the special potatoes as well. If the prices dropped alittle, I think they could get more clientele.
Ric's is a great restaurant particularly w/ the Nov promo of 3 courses for $27. Great calamari and prime rib. Dessert was fair. Drink selection w/ drafts was excellent. Been to d/t Edm, Calg, Whistler and Victoria....all are consistant. Good rooms for company meeting/functions. Good location. Awaiting for one to open in Van.
Ric's is offering a $25 3 course special during the fall, and we were impressed with the range of starters, entrees, and desserts on offer... unlike many fixed menu specials. My calamari starter portion was enough for two to share, while my partner was also very satisfied with the chowder. My prime rib entree was sublime, and the four layer chocolate cake was also very good. My partner had the pepper steak and cheesecake, also delicious. All in all, a very pleasant evening with great value and impressive quality.
I recently visited this restaurant as part of the the local 'dine around' promotion. As part of a group of four, I ordered the duck confit appetizer and the braised filet in peppercorn demi as an entree. When asked how I would like the filet I replied "medium rare". The appetizer was marginally OK -- a reasonable portion but lacking in overall taste -- it would have been much improved with even some type of sauce or glaze. The filet entree was completely overcooked and there was no peppercorn demi as advertized. When I cut into the filet it was solid and hard throughout. I brought this to the attention of the server who responded that it is not possible to braise beef other than in a well done manner. Which is when I asked, "if that is the case then why did you ask me how I wanted the filet cooked?". The server's response was "sorry". My tablemates contributed the comment that even for a braised filet, what I received was vastly overcooked.
In short, the meal was in-edible and when I brought the quality issue to the attention of the server I was not offered any options as to a recourse or restitution. I wound up paying full value for a meal I could not eat.
It amazes me that a restaurant that chooses to participate in a "dine around" promotion in order to have patrons experience the fare and hopefully return again or spread the good word would offer this level of overall quality.
Everyone makes mistakes -- it is what is done to correct a mistake that makes the long term impression. My view is that this restaurant doesn't care.
I will not return again and I will endeavour to advise acquaintances of my negative experience.
This wasn't the first time I've been to Ric's, so I knew what to expect food-wise. My wife and I arrived very early and were promptly seated to wait for our friends. After some wine list difficulties, champagne was ordered along with some Bruschetta because I was starving... 30 minutes later I got to enjoy my first sip. Too long.
The Bruschetta was quite tasty as were the crab and shrimp-stuffed mushroom caps we had afterwards. However, the servers need to be intuitive! If you bring food, then napkins and place settings are a must.
My wife ordered Prime Rib and I had the 18 oz. New York. It was cooked perfectly (medium-rare), but had a bit too much gristle.
After a bottle of Louis Roederer and a bottle of Wolf Blass Platinum 2002 Shiraz (very nice!), I decided to have a couple of Mojitos. Now, I feel that I make one of the best Mojitos around, but the bartender at Ric's knows his stuff. They were superb. If I'd known that they were that good, I probably wouldn't have bothered having any wine.
To sum it up, Ric's is a nice place to go for dinner. The ambiance clicks with me. The appetizers were delicious. The steak? Not bad. The only problem they really have is the service. Once I've got a drink in front of me, I'm not too picky. SO DON'T TAKE 1/2 AN HOUR TO BRING ME THE DRINK! It's that simple.
My girlfriend and I had set our sights on this place while it was still called Morton's; even though we had read some pretty critical reviews we were quite impressed with it's service and selections.
When we visit Victoria we tend to do a lot of walking so we swung around to Ric's after a movie and some coffee. We dined around 9pm, avoiding any kind of dinner traffic, and the experience we encountered left my girlfriend proclaiming it was her "New Favorite Restaurant".
Since we had been looking for a good steak on our weekend in Victoria, my girlfriend went with the New York with Chef's Potatoes after enjoying a delicious House Salad and fantastic Sourdough bread. I decided to invest in Filet Mignon with vegetables, and I can write that I have never tasted a dish so filling and flavorful.
Our server was gloriously attentive, albeit we were most likely spoiled on account of the late hour. She even rewarded my girlfriend with a coupon for a complimentary appetizer on her next visit in response to my girlfriend's appreciative tone.
The ambiance was softly lit and very intimate, yet not so secluded as to where a birthday being celebrated nearby didn't lend to a sense of community about the place.
I would have to recommend this Restaurant to anyone wanting to enjoy GREAT food with a special person(s) and/or a special occasion.
I ordered the green thai currey chicken and my Bf got the 13oz New York steak with a side of Veggies and a baked potato, We also Ordered the bacon wrapped scallops. When we got the scallops (for $11) there were only 4 the sauce it came with tasted like mayo with some chayenne My food was absolutely horrible it had some mango chunks on the side which was gross and it wasn't even warm And also very small for $21 I could have made this at home and I am not much of a cook. My bfs steak was okay I enjoyed it and the baked potato was Awsome. They bake the potato and then take out the inside and mix it with all the fixings and put it back in the potato and top it with cheese and melt it again. We didn't order drinks.
We came back the next day because Friday was Mojito day but they didn't have a bartender on duty so the waitress came out and she noticed that they didn't even have mint!!! lol so I will NOT be returning. I do not recommend this place to anyone
I was in Victoria for a conference and liked the ad for Ric's Grill. It also seemed to be known for their steak.
We found out Wednesdays are 25% off the bottle price, so we started off with a Coppola Claret and warm bread--yum. The salads were included in the entree price and okay--pre-dressed too much.
My partner had the prime rib steak--delicious taste and texture. Paired with the claret, it was fantastic.
I had the BBQ ribs. I spit out bits of broken bone after broken bone. My partner called the server over and it was taken away. The manager apologized and gave us the BBQ ribs on the house and I didn't wait too long for a new set of ribs. I only ended up eating a quarter of them, but was very happy with the way they handled things. I tipped the server twice the price of the ribs as he was stellar.
So I ate my leftovers the next day. Sixteen broken bits of bone in all. So I had to write this review to tell the good and the bad.
This was my second visit to Ric's, this time for lunch instead of dinner. We have had a nice experience for dinner, but I was extremely disappointed with my lunch this time. I ordered the a grilled chicken sandwich with pesto, which carried a $12 price tag and sounded nice on the menu. I expected a panini or at least some grilled multigrain bread. To my surprise it arrived on two slices of ordinary thin sliced white bread that were overtoasted and although slathered with pesto, quite dry. It was difficult to bite into. I know this restaurant is located on government street and likely caters to tourists, but c'mon, people expect a bit more than wonderbread! I should probably have specified my bread choice with the server but was not given the option. From this experience, I have to conclude that this is an overpriced tourist trap, don't recommend for lunch.
We went here in May. There were six of us, which seemed to impress the waiting staff. Maybe business was slow...
The menu was overwhelming, however the menu items which two of our party wanted were not available. They didn't mention this until we'd had a while to look at the menu and choose. Not a great start. After we'd finished our appetizers, some of the plates were cleared, some were not (the restaurant was not busy, maybe three parties). The wait for main courses was excruciating; we were ready to leave when they finally arrived, at which point our appetizer plates were cleared. I had a caesar salad with Halibut and it was not good. Seriously, I've had better caesar salad from Wendy's. Two of our party had steak. Apparently it was ok. We complained, we got a discount; overall quite a horrible evening.
During holidays we spent two evenings at Ric's Grill and every time was great, we got very good food and an excellent service. The soups were great, all fish and meet dishes were superb, but be prepared for the dessert, they are just unbelievable.
