This converted service station has not broken the bank in spending money on decoration. The furniture and decor are simple and unadorned. It can be cold in winter.
The service is friendly and unsophisticated and the food is the normal fare with burgers etc. predominating. I never had a bad meal there - but I would not go as far as saying that food was gourmet. Certainly - it is a funky different kind of restaurant that is a bit of an institution.
Pluto's is the place I go to most often for breakfast on the weekend. Why? Simple - no waits! Most of the popular breakfast spots in downtown Victoria often have substantial line-ups to get inside, but with Pluto's you can usually walk right in and grab a booth.
The food is decent - nothing spectacular, but it tastes good and it's usually brought to the table quickly. The wait staff are usually prompt and on the ball. The ambiance and decor are okay.
Overall an okay experience - and no wait!
I've lived in Victoria for two decades but had never been to Pluto's diner until recently. I'd heard that the food was not very good up until now but I was pleasantly surprised when I went.
Breakfast: this is their specialty and what brings most people there. They offer a good asst of breakfast meals, including a mean huevos rancheros. The prices are not cheap but I feel it is decent value, except for the coffee - it's cheap swill and they charge nearly $4 for it!
Dinner: I've tried burgers so far and they have been good - and you can upgrade a side of fries with poutine for a couple bucks more. It comes with onion rings, gravy, and roast garlic, the latter I can do without.
Service: it is hit or miss depending who you get. A couple of the servers there are not very friendly, and one clearly dislikes her job and seem to try to avoid coming to your table. I have to order a pitcher of beer a ta time because she otherwise only comes by every 15 mins.
Atmosphere: it's a funky place that has the potential to be really awesome with some renos. It could be made into a cool retro garage themed place by lots of adding neon signs, old metal garage signs, a jukebox and props liks an old gas pump. Instead, they have weird artwork and cheesy stuff plastered all over the walls. Maybe they could get the Restaurant Makeover guy to come in to help out. Don't expect to see this place on 3D until then though.
