The Penny Farthing is a popular upscale British pub in Oak Bay.
Came here yesterday with my sister visiting from out of town. She had experienced the PF yam fries and mussels last summer and really wanted to check this place out again.
You know what it's like, the first time you eat something you really like and can't wait to have again, will it live up to the first experience? Happy to report two thumbs up and at least a toe.
She ordered what she remembered from her first visit and was again very impressed. A generous portion of yam fries smothering a pound of fresh, plump mussels with this delicious "curry cream" sauce. I would describe it as sort of a curry poutine. I must say, it was good.
We shared the mussels/yam fries I also ordered the coconut prawns with curry and rice. My prawns were fresh and plump and very tasty in a curry sauce, the same one I believe they use for the mussels. The six coconut curry prawns came with a disappointing tasting white rice that I can only describe as perhaps Uncle Ben's, not so good.
Our server was in a good mood and there when we needed her.
PF owned by the same people as Bard & Banker and Irish Times serve up a very pricey pint. Beer ain't cheap but I suppose standard for most pubs in the area.
All in all a beautiful day and a very nice lunch.
I took some vactioning relatives here on a hot Monday in August 06. This pub was recommended to us by the very English folks that run the Dreemskerry.
They were headed off there themselves for the Monday 2 for 1 fish and chips, so we figured it was worth a try.
Zero disappointment here for a change.
The fish and chips were excellent..The real deal, not that overpriced smakk portioned kitschy junk you get in Vancouver.
This is a very cool dark wood English type pub atmosphere, and we will be back there in a flash next trip to Victoria.
We go to Victoria at least 4 times a year from Vancouver..........Washington. We always make it a point to stop in at the Penny Farthing. The food is consistently good, not spectacular, but good, solid Pub Grub. The libations are decent and varied but it's the service that is always top-notch. The girls are always ready with a smile, no matter how busy the PF is on a Friday or Saturday evening. The ambiance is also one of friendliness and inviting in nature. We always feel more than welcome at the Penny Farthing and so will you.
The Penny Farthing scores big points for its decor and ambiance. So much effort was put into creating an authentic english pub. Stand outside and have a look at the incredible detail that went into the building, then go inside and be surrounded by dark wood and cozy corners. Excellent service, and great pub food. This pub has become an icon of Oak Bay.
When we want good, hearty comfort food, we go to the Penny Farthing. I have eaten here a half dozen times and I've never been disappointed. The atmosphere is just wonderful. We like to sit in a different part of the pub each time we go so we can experience all the wonderful details.
