The Noodle Box is a funky eatery that uses a fusion of cooking techniques and flavors from many foreign shores to create a menu of quick and tasty noodle dishes.
When the owner used to have the food stall on the corner of Fisgard and Store, the food was cheap and his food had the same taste as the authentic street vendors that you would find in SE Asia. Since he has moved and has become popular, the food has degraded in quality. There is too much sauce that no longer has any character of how he used to cook it. The dishes are inconsistent and bland. The amount of protein that you get now is minimal and the prices jacked up. I suggest you go to Thai Bistro on Johnson that is 30 percent less and 5 times more authentic than the food you now get at the noodlebox. I just feel that the food here is overrated for the price you pay.
If you are expecting to be in and out of the noodlebox quickly, you can forget it. Its definatley a step above fast food noodle joints. But not quite a full restaurant.
Good Noodles at a decent price. The speed at which the cooks work at rush hour is good dinner entertainment. The wait for food can be a little long depending on your proximity to dinner or lunch.
Hot tip - Sit in the back and have abeer while you wait, unlike those chumps who sit or stand up front in the 3 or 4 seats for take out.
Always worth a stop.
Noodle boxes should come with a warning label warning of addiction. I know people who eat at the Noodle Box (both locations) more than a few times a week. The beauty of it is that you get to choose how you'd like the noodle box made. You can have your choice of meats or tofu and you can choose how mild or hot you'd like your noodle box to be. Be aware that it's all made to order, so consistency can be an issue, but tastiness is a guarantee. The staff are friendly and they are open to requests, such as omitting fish sauce for vegans. Perfect take-out for wandering the streets or taking to the beach. Awesome!
What makes this place so special is the BOXES. I thought they were only on T.V, until the Noodle Box! But really... it is unique to Victoria and has a great story of how it was started. It is very busy and that's what add's to the appeal. Hip, Young & The Perfect Place to go in summer then take to the beach or anytime! Keep it up!
First off the noodle box is a very busy place, and I have only gone once but was not impressed and did not go back. I could have ordered the wrong items not sure.
Ordered two noodles for takeout, one was hot, and was not impressed. The spice or hotness had no flavour, it was just hot. Did not appeal to me. The prices are also in my opinion are a little too high for what it is. Don't think they would be able to charge that in a place like Vancouver or Toronto.
This place is definately a western creation. When I asked for my meal without fish sauce the counter person said "No problem" then yelled to the cook "double the salt" when i asked if he was joking he said no and told me thats what they sub in when people request no oyster sauce. Ummmm.......HOW BOUT JUST ADDING SOME MORE SOY SAUCE OR LEMON JUICE!!!! This place is good for a quick bite but is definately a bit of a muck up in its attempt to "westernized" South East Asian Cuisine.
Wow I cant believe this place is rated so high. They use sooo much processed sauce it ruins the whole meal. I saw them put it in its the same large jugs that you can buy at costco. Is it that hard to make stuff from scratch these days. The food just makes you feel sick after eating it and is no good. You get barley any protein and it is overpriced as well. Lots of suckers fall for this generic north american thai food and it is a shame.
We've tried everything on the menu and love it all. Nothing beats the Tom Yum Soup on a cold evening. The loyalty program of one free box after 20 could be a little more generous though. Long live Noodle Box!
Slow even when not busy, generic sauces, little value for money. You have to add extra meat or seafood (at extra cost!) to make it a good balance of ingredients. Way too much for boxed takeout. They are basically living off a rep built when it was a small cart. Food and prices changed for the worse...the price of success!
Having visited both Noodle Box locations over the past three years, it is still consistently great food. Service is slower at peak times, but you can always call in ahead and pick up! Excellent dishes, with a variety of choices every day for specials. Love it! The Douglas Street location is larger, and the lines move a bit quicker, the Fisgard location is a very small shop. cozy!
Have come here enough times to get my 20th free noodle box. :)
Favourite is the chili plum.
Spice level is inconsistant. I usually order medium mild. Sometimes its too hot for me sometimes I'd like it hotter. The douglas location tends to be milder per spice level. The hotter spice levels tend to lose the good flavours and just burn, so I'd stick around medium if you want a tasty spicy. Also, the Fisgard location usually gives me more sauce which I like.
Service is SLOW for a fast food place but friendly..especially during busy periods. Be prepared to wait, but you can chill out and watch the guys cook at the bar.
Noodle boxes are very tasty and yes..a bit adictive. Good place to bring friends for a fun place to eat. Prices are a bit steep though for noodles and a bit of meat + veggies. Usually around 10 dollars/box.
great value and delicious food. watching the preparation on a busy night is worth the wait. calling ahead to the store for ordering saves the waiting. we eat there several times a month and the kids boxes are perfect for all ages
