Serves noodles and ramen
This place has the best udon noodles I've ever tasted. The care and love for noodle making is very apparent when you see the friendly owner preparing your noodle dish behind the counter. I was interested in trying Konpira after reading a news article about the owner's traditional noodle making techniques. If you enjoy udon, you should try this place out.
While going to a Chinese place we check the salt-and-pepper seafood at a Japanese one first thing are noodles and asking about Okonomiyaki. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okonomiyaki).
At Konpira they impressed us once and forever and every time.
Ambiance is nothing fancy but very Japanese, if you know what I mean...
This is one of my favorite japanese restaurants in the Downtown Victoria area. While they are well-known for their yummy handmade udon noodles, their nigiri sushi is also very good. This has now become my go-to place for sushi. The sushi selection is not that diverse as some other sushi places near by but they have all the staples and their portions are very generous and fresh. I enjoy the restaurant setting but if I'm in a hurry, take out is always an option. The staff are also very friendly. I'm now a regular patron of this establishment!
This place is so unbelievably yummy!!! This restaurant takes care in preparing the food and you can taste the difference. They offer california rolls with real crab meat and it's worth the extra 1$, the servers are friendly and actually seem like they enjoy their job (this is rare in sushi places IMHO). I really have nothing but good things to say about this place, except it's too bad they close at 8:30 on a friday night, but I guess that's just the norm for Victoria. Anyways this place rocks!!!
I've been to Konpira about 5 times now and have never been dissappointed. I really enjoy having the Nabeyaki Udon which comes in a traditional Japanese individual serving pot with Udon, chicken, egg, and assorted tempura. The soup broth is very tasty and the Udon even more so. Another dish to try is their Sukuyaki which is a hot pot dish with vercimille, beef, veggies, tofu in a very flavourful broth served with rice on the side. For a dinner for two including both these dishes comes to under $25. A great deal if you ask me.
I'm going back again soon.
