Finally a Good, Well Priced Indian Lunch Buffet
By renoir of Victoria (10 Reviews)

Forget the previous reviews. This place in now under new ownership and there wasn't a frozen pea is sight.
Obviously when my friend suggested this place for lunch, I was reluctant, but he assured me that it was really good now and that the awful reviews must be really old (they were) and that he thought it was now the best Indian food in town for the price. So I went with him for the 12$ lunch buffet, available daily until 2pm.

The buffet was not huge, consisting of 6 main dishes and a soup plus good rice and nan, but everything was well made and delicious. The buffet today offered dhal, chana masala, a delicious fish masala, a chicken curry, and a fresh eggplant dish and a vegetable and potato dish. There were no lamb or meat dishes which was fine with me and there was an appropriate degree of heat in the spicy dishes. The cream soup was really incredible, rich and buttery flavored. There was a small salad bar, but really it offered just cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions and those killer little green peppers and there wasn't any desert offered other than one item which I passed on. I'm fine with not having a more elaborate salad and desert bar if it means keeping the price at 12$.

The cliental was mainly Indian, which I always take as a good sign of authentic cooking. The service was good with the waiter coming often to refill our glasses of water and I will definitely be back.

This place is not close to any South Indian AUTHENTIC food. Everything we ordered Dosa, Idly, Medhuvada, Tamarind rice tasted like dirt. I am writing this with confidence, since I am a South Indian and this place mocks great South Indian Cuisines. Prices too hight and quality of food is POOR. There is nothing good about this place other than if u like to lighten your Wallet

No Good Indian in Victoria

ARGH! Ok, so I'm from England and have been spoiled with stellar balti dishes for far too long, but come on Victoria! Where's the authenticity in Indian cuisine? $50 bucks for watered down Bhuna and Rogan Josh...yuck and ouch! Appies could have been purchased from Safeway and tasted fresher! Soggy, burnt bread and meat added to sauce, not cooked in sauce. I give up! I've tried them all folks! Buy yourselves a tin of Patak's and let loose...you'll be better off for it!

As the title suggests its ok but not outstanding. I love the Rogan Josh but that's probably about all that does it for me on the menu. Where are all the good indian restauraunts on this island? Spice Jammer is one of the better ones but its pricey to say the least and it's not THAT good. For the money this is a good one to at least try.

Not for real Indian food fans

Horrible! What else can I say? If you can't even make a decent raita, what hope is there for more complicated dishes?

Service was slow, which turned out to be a good thing, because things got even worse once the food arrived.

There are other good places for Indian food in Victoria, and this one would be at the bottom of my list. The best is probably the cheapest - Sabri near Tillicum Mall.

Worst Customer Service Ever!!!

This was the worst dining experience ever! As we made reservations, we were seated right away however it took 20 minutes before the "waiter" took our order and over an hour and 10 minutes before we were brought any food! Not once did he come back to check our drinks. The food was good, although I am uncertain if it was really good or if we were just starving! When we were done we wanted to get out of there and went to the counter to pay. We were told they could not accept our money until the "waiter" brought us the bill. We had to wait another 10 minutes and talk to another server just to get the bill while our waiter set tables. It was very over-priced for what you get. All in all, we will NOT be going back or recommending this place to ANYONE!

Too expensive and not tasty.

I'm a vegetarian and I love a thali (assorted small dishes). So when I saw on their brochure that they are known for their thalis, we had to go.

The veg thali is 18.50. A bit pricey, I thought ($1 more than the meat version?!?), but I was willing to pay for something tasty. Too bad that this thali was not.

It came with 1 veg, 1 daal, 1 saag, a dish of raita and some rice. This sounds like plenty of food, until you examined portion size. Each dish was a scant half cup, even the rice! No naan, it came with poori, 1! And it was not true poori. This was like a roti that had been deep fried. No dessert, not even rice pudd.

The flavours were fine, but it was unsatisfying, especially when we had paid such a premium price.

The service was also fine. One poor guy ran around to all the tables, while the owners?!? stood chatting at the front.

As for ambiance, go elsewhere. This restaurant looks like it was furnished with garden store castoffs and used Christmas lights.

We won't return.

Unfortunate

This was possibly one of the worst dining experiences of my life.

I probably should have backed out slowly after witnessing the 80’s garden patio décor, but I thought perhaps it would be one of those gems that looks terrible but offers terrific food!

It wasn’t.

I LOVE Indian food. I recently moved here from the mainland where Indian restaurants were my restaurants of choice when dining out. So, I’ve eaten a lot of Indian food!

It was very expensive and, in one word, bland. And if you were expecting fresh vegetables, think again – we’re talking frozen vegetables here, people! Yes, those crappy carrots-diced-into-cubes frozen veggie mixes. Yum.

I would talk about the service, but I didn’t have any. The food took FOREVER to come out and I waited 40 minutes just for a refill of water. The wait staff seemed disengaged at best and generally annoyed that there were customers in the restaurant. Don’t worry guys, I won’t be back to make you serve me again! You successfully alienated another customer! Mission accomplished!
