At Fujiya, their cooler is always packed with freshly made sushi and bento boxes for food on the run.
Being a huge sushi fan I find it hard to love the sushi from fujiya but if you are looking for decent, quick and cheap - this is the place to go! It is always busy but they are always replenishing the food so you know it's fresh and the lineup to pay moves really fast. If you have any questions or special orders they are quick to answer or get you your food. I find they use a bit too much rice and it seems a bit chewy but the rolls are always packed with good stuff too so I just don't eat all of the rice. They make a decent, extremely cheap, sunomono salad and have several sizes of fresh miso soup. If you want to cheaply experiment with sushi to find out what you like before you spend more money to go to a fine dining sushi restaurant, this is the place to go! Great for a cheap snack too! Plus this place has a ton of japanese groceries so you can experiment with making sushi and other japanese delicacy's on your own too!
A few years back, before the sushi bar was expanded, this place was a gem. The food was cheep, fresh and yummy. They closed for renovations and the sushi has never been the same. This is what we like to call 'macdonalds sushi', its cheep, fast and filling, but not necessarily good. Prices on a few rolls have gone up so much, you may as well go somewhere good now cheep was the only draw. The rice is poorly prepared and often a bit mushy. Sushi is not properly chilled, often sitting warm in large stacks in the cooler. Fujiya is however, an excellent Japanese specialty store, its a great place to find products like husk on rice that normally isn't found for sale outside of Japan.
With so many good cheep takeout sushi places in Victoria, I don't understand why Fujiya remains popular, its reputation is entirely undeserved.
Fujiya is certainly one of Victoria's little gems. There are few places that you can be in and out in less than 10 minites, spend less than $8 on a large meal, and know that it has been made fresh in the past few minutes.
Not the best tasting sushi I have ever had, but by no means a slouch in the taste department. And the value of food for the money, no where else I've been locally can touch it.
We took the bus out to Fujiya from downtown Victoria and it's definitely worth it. There are many different varieties of sushi as well as snack food, meats, candies, beverages, and even Japanese video rentals.
We picked up a few boxes of sushi to take back to the motel we were staying at, and they were still fine by the time we got there. We also had leftovers for the next day. The quality of the sushi may not be up to par with the best of Japanese restaurants, but it's good take out quality and definitely nice to your wallet.
One of the best places to get Sushi in Victoria. Mostly take out, although they do have tables to eat outside if the weather is good. Always fresh they have several people making the Sushi all day long. Never had a problem - eaten there more than 10 times over the years. Their recent renovation (2005?) has improved the place as well.
I agree with the last reviewer that not all changes after the reno are positive. That being said, there is no other place that I think of that I can roll in (ha) and grab some well made sushi, wasabi peas, and pocati sweat drink and cruise out the door in less than 2 minutes (unless its rush hour, when the line up can be out the door). The staff are super efficient to the point of me risking some positive racial profiling and calling them Japanese-efficient. The miso soup is still 99 cents for a large and overall it is still a good value to get a meal that fills you up and is mostly healthy. The only real drawback is the parking lot -I've come close to being rear ended a few times by mini mama-sans (like my own mom, sigh) who drive with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake, alternating between the two or better yet using both at the same time!
Fresh sushi to go - what a concept! This place is always busy and there's a good reason why. The food is always fresh and consistently turned over with each customer walking through their doors. The value and selection is unbelievable for the times when you feel like Japanese food but don't want to go out to eat. It's quick, easy and delicious! One of my favourite spots when I don't feel like cooking.
Quick and reliable sushi when you're on the go. The food is very fresh, consistent and an excellent value. Fujiya is one of those places where you grab your food from a cooler and pay for it at the cash register. The preparation staff are right there to help you with any special requests or questions. There is no seating inside, but there are some small tables by the front door. Microwaves are available if you'd like to heat anything. The food itself can be a bit bland, but I still love this place.
I still get my takeout there. Since I like shusi a lot; and the food is still good.
However I wish it was as good as before. At the beginning, I thought it was just quality control because I guess the cooks are temp. After several visits, I feels it is just not that good anymore.
what a great place!
great price for great food! i love buying the fresh items and i also love the groceries!
fujiya, i only have one request, please stop putting raw onions in the chicken katsu roll, they're super spicy and cut too big, i always end up picking them out and ruining the roll (;_;) (;_;) (;_;) (;_;) (;_;) (;_;)
