Pub-style food with West Coast influences serving burgers, wraps, salads etc. Patio with excellent ocean views. Sister restaurant to the Flying Beaver at Harbour Air's Richmond terminal.
THis restaurant just (re) opened in June 2009 under the ownership of Harbour Air. They are located in the same building as Harbour Air and feature a similar menu to the Flying Beaver at the company`s richmond location.
The restaurant has 68 seats and comes into its own in the summer as it has about a dozen tables shoe-horned into the floating patio that is right at water level. If you want to watch comings and goings of boats and planes - this is the spot. However, the aroma of aviation gas will be encountered and it can be noisy at times.
The evening we were there was fairly busy and they were playing loud music on the patio. That seemed to drive the customers away as it emptied out quite well by 7 or so. Service was bit slow and lacking polish but the food that we had was quite good and reasonabley priced for such a location.
This location previously had the Blackfish cafe and they have redecorated and changed a few things - but it has to be the location as it is quite enjoyable on a sunny summer`s evening. We shall see if they can overcome the lacklustre service to retain a loyal clientele. I am not sure visitors were aware it was there as it`s not obvious from Wharf street and you have to treck across the car park to get there.
The view is nice and if you don't mind the noise it's fun to watch the float planes come in and out. Unfortunately I found the food and service to be pretty sub standard.
Our poutine was cold - the fact that it was delivered so soon after ordering should have been a tip-off that it had been sitting around. When we told the waitress about it all she did was say "Oh really? - no effort to do anything about it.
We ordered a pitcher of Mojitos which were the worst I have ever had - tasted like it was made with some kind of packaged mix, yuck.
Then we ordered some wings - half plain and half BBQ. I was told we would be charged 50 cents for ordering 2 types of wings. I asked our server if she could waive this on account of the bad poutine and she said "It's not at my discretion."
So we ate our wings - at least they were hot., then decided we'd go spend our money somewhere with decent food and drinks and better service. I got the bill and sure enough there was the 50 cent charge for getting 2 types of wings. I asked our server if I had ordered only BBQ wings, would I be charged 50 cents to put the sauce on them, seeing as all they did was put BBQ sauce on half our plain wings. This was too much for her poor brain to comprehend and all she could spit out was "It's not at my discretion!" Needless to say, the 50 cents came out of her tip.
I wouldn't recommend Flying Otter to anyone - other than the location it has nothing going for it and it seems they are coasting on the fact that it's a nice spot.
