Eugene's is a cafeteria style restaurant serving Greek cuisine at reasonable prices.
I have grown to like Greek Food although I have never been to Greece so I have no idea if this is how they make the food there. As other raters have noted - the Gyros and Donairs etc. are packed with meat and light on the sauce so they can sometimes be a bit on the dry side, but it's better than sauce dripping down your hand. The fries and onion rings were delicious and way better than our local A&W.
I complement them generally on the food as it is certainly fresh as it's made to order in front of you and came very quickly. But it is just a cafeteria where you have to go and order. Don't even think of trying a credit card - cash or debit only. Service is brusque and generally efficient and you collect your food when it's ready. No wasting time on serving you. This keeps the prices low but means it has all the fun of dining in a military food hall.
All in all - you can have a very reasonably priced Greek meal here - certainly the cheapest I have had in Victoria. I would prefer to rate the Ambiance at 1.5 so take that into account.
I stopped in at this Eugene's after a doctor's appointment to grab something for lunch. I've been eating at the one downtown since before they moved over to Broad street so I know what to expect. If you're looking for a fancy restaurant then go to Periklis or Sidney. If you want cafeterial style greek food made fresh, then this is a good choice. I opted for the vegetarian platter which consisted of a spanikopita (spinach and cheese pie), houmous, tzatziki, pita and greek salad. The spanikopita was warm and cut into little cubes which made it easy to eat and was really good. At first I was dismayed by the little cups of humous and tzatziki because they looked pretty small considering the price ($10) for the platter but they are deceptive and actually hold quite a bit - certainly enough for the pita which had been grilled and cut into 6 triangles. The houmous was good and garlicky and the tzatziki was really good - creamy and nicely balanced. The salad was a bit disappointing for me as it didn't have much of a dressing but I think I'd rather have it that way than have it swimming in a dressing that I don't like. This way I think it appeals to more people. Good fresh food made on the premises. Everyone at work was jealous. When I have feta withdrawl, Eugene's always comes to mind!
My wife and I absolutely love Eugene's @ Fort & Foul Bay. It is a great, friendly, warm place. The food is out of this world. It has become our #1 favourite greek restaurant. We highly recommend that you all give this place a try.............
I've worked at Eugine's on broad for a while and I have tried almost everything on the menu. I believe the reason they Humus and Tzatziki are served in small portions is because they're made from scratch.
The food quality is Outstanding. Most of the menu items are made from scratch and taste great. This depends on the individual server who made the food as some use more care then others. During a rush you are more likely to have an unsatisfactory dining experience but this rarely tends to happen.
The service is solid, knowing the current staff I can say that they know what there doing. The previous staff was cause for a second place slot for best Greek restaurant in Victoria, Instead of our usual first. (Times Colonist review)
The value rating is Decent. A little overpriced but with the rising cost of food its becoming more apparent the menu prices can seem acceptable. Personally I think its a bit much, but without waiters the tipping option is usually ignored. A lot of patrons save 15% this way.
If your looking for Ambiance do not come to Eugine's. There are no waiters and the cafeteria style layout can make for a lot of clutter. Eugine's is more of a "swing by for a bite to eat" place, then a "dine at our fine establishment" place.
Lastly Eugine's is fully licensed, so you can buy Beer, Wine and even Ouzo. The food is excellent, but I wouldn't purchase a lot due to the price. The service is generally good during non-rush hours but the overall ambiance is lacking.
Eating at Eugine's is a great idea if you want a healthy tasty snack.
Ate here once. Donair was good. Calamari was average. Spanakopita was pretty bad. Tasted like it had been frozen and microwaved. It was soggy. Wouldn't order it again. Might go back and try something else to compare. Staff are friendly and food is served quickly.
Probably the worst lamb souvlaki I've ever had. It actually tasted rancid. I would not recommend Eugene's to anyone. I will not be going back there. I'm very dissapointed because I love lamb souvlaki, but this place is useless to me.
I went in tonight for take-out and the food was wonderful! Very fresh, healthy and authentic. The ambiance is a little lacking if your looking for a full on sit down dinner but the food totally makes up for it. This is a little local treasure if your looking for a great lunch or a quick take out dinner.
