I've lived near Brentwood Bay for the past 3 years, and have watched this restaurant steadily decline in that time. They changed chefs about a year and a half ago and he has slowly taken all the good things off the menu or changed them. They used to have a delicious white wine mussel dish, which they replaced with a gross creamy and very heavy mussel dish. There is no comparison. One of the other best things on the menu was their "Fish Taco" - something that doesn't sound great, but was supremely delicious - it used to be a Deep-Fried halibut (a la fish n chips) wrapped in a flour tortilla like a Taco with lettuce and tomato. The new chef eliminated what made it great - the Fish n Chips part - now it's a slimy gross Halibut mushed into a soggy Tortilla. Several of the Sushi dishes like California rolls have been removed from the menu. They had one called a Dynamite roll which my friend used to always gets, and it's gone.
Their old menu was fairly small, but almost everything on it was good. Since the new chef, they have more than doubled the choices, and most everything has gone downhill. All the food I've ordered or seen ordered is more greasy and sloppy. The one new addition that was pretty good - the Oyster burger - only lasted 6 months or so, then was removed from the menu.
Why can't the chef leave well enough alone? I know I have personally left comment cards raving about my old favorites, so why are you getting rid of them?
The service is always good - nothing special, but never had any problems.
The food is expensive here, most items are closer to $20. I believe the fish n chips is $18 and even the wings are around $14 last I checked. I never used to mind paying a little extra to eat here because the food was so good, but with their new crappy menu, I'd rather take my business elsewhere.
One thing the chef can't ruin is the incredible ocean views and beautiful construction of the lodge. Huge wooden beams and open vaulted ceiling with 180 degree ocean views out of the wall of windows. This is a great place to take a date or go out with friends thanks to the ambiance. Just bring your own food.
our company lunch was held here, had the prawn stir fry, and for $22 was not worth it,
noodles was very oily, the mushrooms were so salty, just ruined, veggies were not flavorful either, only the prawns were ok, very big and juicy, i'm geussing the $22 was for the prawns alone, to me that meal was worth $8, everything else was mediocre, service was ok at best. asked for water and had to ask 2nd time to get it, my colleagues ordered burger's and fish/chips they were good but still not worth the price,
We recently had some out of town guests and wanted to treat them to a West coast dining experience,so we chose this place.Unfortunately, our guests must now be seriously doubting our taste in dining choice!
Our server must have been having a rough day as she was pretty surly, and also after informing us of the specials for the day, immediately stated that if any specials were ordered, all 4 of us should have them,as this would simplify serving!
I had the fish soup as a starter, which was a bit long on the salt, and short on the seafood.
We missed the specials, but my wife and myself ordered the scallops on a bed of pasta. They duly arrived, and immediately appeared as something that could well have been bought at one of the chain of stores offering convenience foods for a summer BBQ.We got a single skewer of scallops that looked as if they had been left on the BBQ for a bit too long. They were over done to the point that they were fused together. This arrived on a bed of rather oily pasta,to the point that the mass of pasta was a single, undiscernable ball. There was no other embellishment to this dish,so it was pretty uninspiring to say the least. We sent this dish back and to their credit,it was replaced without too much fuss. The replacment was better, but not by much, and in no way justified the greater than $20 asking price.
Our bill for the 4 of us,with one bottle of average wine, was in excess of $200.For this,I would expect much better food, and somewhat more enthusiastic service. We last went here about 2 years ago,and was very impressed then,Im not sure what has happened in the interim, but it really is a pity if this place has consistently come to this.Either way,I wont be going back until Ive heard more positive reports on this place
