Beacon Drive In is a good place to go for a soft serve ice cream cone. Basic, diner style meals are also offered, including burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and fish & chips. The proximity to Beacon Hill Park and Dallas Road can't be beat.
Everyone raves about the ice cream here, but I've tried it a few times from now and can't make myself like it. The last time I went I got the chocolate dipped cone and the chocolate had a distinctly nutty flavour which I didn't quite enjoy. To be honest, I much prefer Dairy Queen over this place.
ok folks here is the scoop from a former employee and now regular customer. Breakfast is a decent meal and the ice cream is real icecream not ice milk. Stay away from the chocolate dip and the fancy flavor swirls in the ice cream it doesn't need it. Plain is the best in victoria. They have new owners and management in the last couple of years and are trying lots of new things so if you have a complaint about the service or the food send them a letter I don't recommend trying to talk to staff there as you might get a kid in charge of the shift.
Beacon Drive-In (no longer a drive in really) has been around for many, many years. Many Victorians have grown up with this long-established restaurant, from going their as a kid with your parents to taking your date their as a teenager to taking your kids their as an adult, Beacon Drive-In is an institution.
For great ice-cream and fast-food on a sunny day this place is great, if you expect anything else then don't come here.
The staff consists of mostly young adults, many this is their first job, and the service can relect their inexperience - but remember folks, this is a fast-food outlet. If you arrive with patience and are in the mood for some ice-cream or a burger then this is the place to go.
I hope the place is around for another fifty years or more.
Ok, I just have to say to those that weren't impressed by Beacon Drive-In, you're right, if you've heard glowing reports about it and went to it with high expectations, you will be let down. However, that being said, it is nostalgic Victoria, this is like a walk down memory lane for many of us as it's been around since well before I came into this world. If you're expecting something fantastic like a great burger or something, this isn't the place where you'll get the best burger in town, but every time I taste their "real" ice cream, it evokes memories of being a kid and feeding the ducks in Beacon Hill Park. That's what makes this little gem truly priceless to the true locals!
Well What Can I Say....The Beacon Drive-In....which by the way is not an actual drive in, is famous for its Soft Serve Ice Cream. Island Farms Specialy Makes The Mix Just For Them And I Have Heard It Contains Whipped Cream....That Is Why It Is So Delicious. I Will Admit That They Do Indeed Have The Best Soft Serve Ice Cream Around, But The Service Is Poor And So Is Everything Else On Their Menue. It Is Staffed By Young, Under-Paid Kids That Have No Sense Of Food Safety Or Sanitization. I Ordered A Hamburger There Once And When The Girl Finnished Coughing All Over Her Hands And Threw My Burger Down On The Tray She Rushed Outside To Smoke A Cigarette And Play Hacky-Sack. I Would Only Recommend This Establishment For The Soft Serve Ice Cream. Dairy Queen Is Good If You Like Ice Milk,Because That Is What There Soft Serve Is Made From, But If You Want A Soft Serve That Is Made With Whipped Cream Then The Beacon Drive In Is The Place.
We have been going to the Beacon Hill Drive in since 1967. In the last 15 years we have been going every Sunday, except for Xmas when it has been closed.
We noticed the change that seem to coincide with the change in management. The quality and quantity has taken a real turn for the worse.
We do not recommend this drive in restaurant to any one.
I have enjoyed the soft serve ice cream at the Beacon Drive-In since I was a child. Walks with Grandpa through Beacon Hill Park or on the Dallas Road seawall always ended with a cone. I have returned over the years with visiting friends and now my own children, each time for a yummy cold treat. Unfortunately, while their frozen treats appeal, other menu items fall drastically short in quality, taste, presentation and value for money. September 2009 my guest and I each were served three small overcooked chicken strips, dry shoestring fries of the cheapest supermarket variety and one small foil topped dipping sauce, with a drink of pop, for around $12. When we requested additional sauces to make the strips palatable, we were informed it was an extra charge! I am extremely disappointed at the quality of food presented and the value for money provided. Definitely something to be remedied by this former favourite. Until then, I'll only be returning for the soft serve.
I have been going to Beacon Drive-In since I was a kid in the early 70's & now I take my kids. The actual product that isproduced is drive-in worthy, but the customer service and portions have decrease to the point where I had to complain to the manager. I order a small cone that was less then 2" high and a sundae that was the same amount of icecream in a cup with a tablespoon of sauce and I was charged double the amount. I can remember when the small cones would be big enough to make a childs eyes open wide when the cone was passed to them and I did not know anyone that could finish a large cone. Also, the servers make you feel like they are doing you a favour by handing you your food and when you question them about something, they all have that blank look like a deer in the headlights.
I used to go here all the time when I was a kid, now whenever I go back to Victoria my husband and I go here mainly for the fish and chips and ice cream. This place hasn't changed much and it's a good thing. The food is always consistantly good and the place is pretty clean considering how busy it gets. It's nice to see a restaurant that is actually well staffed. Looking forward to my next trip to the Island
I've been going to the Beacon drive in for 10 or so years. I no longer live in Victoria but it's always my first stop when I come back. The ice cream is very creamy and addictive. Their hot fudge sundaes are wonderful too. I did notice last time I was there the service was horrid. The servers forgot multiple orders and were handing out the orders to the wrong people. It was busy, but I've seen it twice as busy in the summer with no confusion. Aside from that it's a great place to go and sit outside and enjoy the park and views.
Jerks!! We've taken our dogs there since 1981 for an ice-cream after walking in the park. I also catch breakfast there occassionally.
Yesterday we asked for a baby cone for one dog and a baby cone without ice cream for our puppy (too young for ice cream) willing to pay the full baby cone price. The clerk then told us that if it was for the dog we would need to buy small cones as baby cones are just for babies. Of course the smaller cones are more expensive.
I don't need this bullsh*t on my day off . If they're that desperate to make a buck then go right ahead.
That kind of customer service will lead them right down the road to poverty lane.
Pull that crap on the tourists- You'll regret pissing off the locals in November!!!
If you're looking for a really good soft serve ice cream, this is the place to go. If you're looking for a cheap food, you've found it, but the quality is questionable. A good place to go if you are going through Beacon Hill and need a quick place to eat, but don't expect a five star meal. The ice cream is ace though!
The Beacon Drive-in is just a place to get some cheap hot dogs, burgers, or ice cream. Very fast food-ish, no so much about quality as it is about convenience. Right across the street from Beacon Hill park. Grab a cheese dog and go chase the ducks in the park.
I know that there is a lot of hype about this spot. So, having heard all the hype decided to go and give it a try. Naturally I was expecting something well beyond the norm...it was good soft serve ice cream, but it didn't knock my socks off!
I think Dairy Queen sells a good cone, as does McDonald's for half the fat and half the price!
I lived in Victoria from 2006-2008 and went to Beacon Hill Park all the time with family. Yesterday we went after so many years and while waiting for our ride, thought we'd get something from Beacon Drive-In. I was shocked by the attitude the blonde waitress there gave me and my little brother! She handed our orders to us through the window and just walked away and was glaring at us from another window, this girl needs to learn manners not only in a work place, but life itself! So disturbing that people working in customer service are so arrogant and rude. I've worked in customer service for over 5 years and always do my best to please the customer, yet this girl didn't even smile or say one word to us! If anyone knows an e-mail address I can send my complaint to, please let me know! I don't let things like this go easy, she was acting like this to everyone, honestly hope she gets fired and Beacon Hill In steps it up with their employees!
Beacon Drive-In is a part of many Victorian's life and tourist's time spent here. I could only remember good things about this place until recently. I soon discovered that they charge extra for condiments such as an extra sauce for your chicken strips or packets of jam for your toast. I also feel strongly against people ragging on the young people who work there, blaming them for the poor service when some of them may be either improperly trained, or it is their first job. Send a letter to the management about what you do and don't like, the servers have no say in the rules! All in all though, I think if you're looking for a laid back atmosphere where you can sit down and laugh with friends, this is the place to come. Don't expect anything over the top.. this is just a ice cream and hamburger joint. I believe if you're going to try something local in Victoria, try Beacon Drive-In.
The Beacon Drive In has excellent ice cream (although a few times I've been there the ice cream was kind of grainy...thats happened with DQ too though) My grandmother made a big deal out of going there for an ice cream when I was a toddler, and honestly...when I get the inkling to go, I still get as excited as I did then! It isnt extravegant, it isnt to die for...Its just a convenient burger/hot dog stand that happens to have great ice cream. I will continue the "Beacon Hill ice cream" tradition with my nephews and nieces, and my own children one day...for as long as they remain open. :)
If your tired of the typical blizzrd or dipped cone at dairy queen or baskin robbins then beacon hill drive in is the place to go to get an amazing creamy icecream(lets just hope you aren't looking for a low-fat dessert!) I have never eaten at the drive in before, I have only ever had icecream here...but every once in awhile I crave the beacon hill icecream! so its worth a try for any sweet tooth!
When I was travelling in Victoria recently, my husband and I went to this eatery for lunch after walking for several hours, convering 10 miles. The staff were friendly; the service was warm and the food was hot and tasted great. The cheese burgers were the closest to homemade that I have ever tasted. We shall return when we go back this coming weekend!!!
