Serves authentic Thai cuisine in a cozy environment. Open for lunch and dinner.
Ihave eaten a lot of pad thai. I have eaten a lot of bad pad thai. This was REALLY BAD pad thai. They would not have dared serve this to a eat in diner. It would have been sent back. I opened my take out container and the smell was that of being down wind of a rotten beach on a blustery day. I tried one just incase and began gagging immediately I threw the shrimp in the toilet and tried the noodles. Too bad but the nasty prawns and infiltrated the whole dish. Didn;t really matter because the noodles were swimming in oil and had no flavor of their own at all just the gross prawn smell. All into the toilet. Me hungry and out $13.50 - no discount for take out. NEVER go there. Trust me.
I had many good experiences at Baan Thai. Fresh flavorful tastes every time. Good atmosphere, great menu, clean, welcoming, friendly staff, amazing food, fast services. I'd recommend Baan Thai to anyone visiting Victoria who wants good Thai food and service. Still the best Thai food on the island. **Try red snapper and basil noodle.
I just returned from a dinner with my wife from the Baan Thai in Oak Bay this evening and we both decided we needed to warn other diners of what awaits them. Our waitress was dressed in a see through top, that had such a wide cut-out, that anytime she bent forward (even slightly), to refil our drinks, or serve our food we were both staring straight down her shirt. It is unfortunate to have to point this out to a "Thai" restaurant (of ALL establishments), but a dress code would do wonders for this restaurant, maybe even beautiful traditional uniforms for the staff ?! But what we were presented with tonight was the hight of distastefulness, she was serving us dinner for goodness sakes, but it was as if she were puting herself on the menue. How very, very unfortunate!
Baan Thai is a small Thai joint on Blandshard. I think it used to be located on Government, I remember going there as well way back in the day. The food is good but the portions are small for what you get. A solid choice for Thai food in Victoria. Service is good.
Terrible food, terrible service. The waitress seemed intoxicated. She had bloodshot eyes & her breath smelled of alcohol. She spilled my water & haphazardly placed my food on the table. Not professional at all. I ordered the Pad Thai & mussels. It was disappointing. The Pad Thai did not have the sweet ketchup flavour common in Canadianized Pad Thai instead it tasted like Chinese fried rice noodle. If I wanted Chinese food I would have gone to a Chinese restaurant. Pad Thai is supposed to have a bit of tomato paste. The mussels tasted off as well. It was overpriced & served by a tipsy waitress. The decor was alright but nothing special.
Its not the greatest Thai in Victoria, but its not bad.
Its not in the 30-45 range, unless they have amped things up. But it is over priced for what you get. The quality is only so-so.
The ambiance was nice enough, but had no personality. If you imagine 'generic and overpriced Asian restaurant' Baan Thai is what you will see.
I called to place my order for pick up in an hour later and was told sure no problem. I get there with my tired and hungry children at the time I stated and my order isn't ready, the server went to the back to check on it and told me it'll be no more than 2-3 mins and they are just finishing my order up. Ten minutes later I get a insincere apology and the server tells me it got really busy and my order is still being done. My order was ready 20 minutes late. I made the mistake of paying when I got there, if I hadn't paid then I would have walked out of there. I get home to discover one of the containers of food isn't sealed properly and it leaked all over the bottom of the paper bag which ripped. I found the service very rude and unfriendly. The food is good but not worth the hassle. Definitely not a place I'd go to again and will make sure my friends know about my experience.
The food here is my favorite Thai. The lunch specials are a great quick, extremely flavorful meal for under $15, and the deep fried banana with ice cream is devine. I enjoy Baan Thai almost weekly and am always satisfied. Which is the reason why I continue to bring them my business. Oh, and the Thai Iced Tea is extremely delicious if you haven't tried it before!
(please note this review is for the Blanshard downtown location not the one in Oak Bay on Fort)
This is hands down my favorite place to go for lunch. For about ten dollars you get your choice of three main plates (thai red curry, pad thai, or a vegetable with cashew stir fry type dish) with rice, spring rolls and soup to start.
The soup is fairly plain but still very enjoyable. Maybe a vegetable broth? which comes out quickly after ordering. By the time i'm about half way through my main has arrived with two spring rolls. I always get lunch combo B that is the vegetable cashew stir fry. The sauce is a chili garlic sweet but almost sour amazing creation. The spring rolls are always good but sometimes depending on the plate placement can get soggy. The dip they come with is also great. My lunch date friend is a red curry fan so whenever we go she winds up with that (possibly lunch combo A?).
The two girls who serve there are always so friendly and i've never had any problems with them. I usually wind up having three glasses of water because they are so prompt to fill up my glass. I love the decor of the restaurant its thai themed without being overboard.
With all of that being said I go for lunch time. I arrive at 11:50 or 12:45 (12 it is instantly packed Monday-Friday). I've heard the dinner menu is different as Thai style eating is shared eating. But it is my favorite place to go for lunch and I highly recommend giving it a try!!!!!
Thai beer is good. Thai iced tea is good. Fried rice is definitely good.
Reservations highly recommended. Restaurant is small. Lots of people. Door open so cold inside.
Good Thai food in Victoria.
I have always had excellent food here. Their spring rolls are better than any other that I've had, pad Thai is dynamite and their peneang (red) curries are delicious. Lunch specials are an incredible bargain, with soup, spring rolls and one of three entrees for around $10, with enough left over for a light dinner.
Unlike some other reviewers, I've always had excellent, friendly service.
Nice touch - they do take-out, which my partner and I indulge in almost weekly
The food, service, value, and ambiance are all consistently excellent every time I come here. It's usually busy on the weekend and they unfortunately don't take reservations. The wait is always worth it and I'm never disappointed. I especially enjoy their assortment of curries and the sweat and sour trout. For dessert, the deep fried banana with ice cream is a nice close to a great meal.
Excellent Thai food that is very consistent. Service is usually good, but I've seen times where it was problematic. The restaurant is small and tables are close together. It's often very busy, so, on busier days, I suggest visiting them at non-peak hours or ordering take-out in advance. Lunch combos for $9 are a great deal. If you want good Thai food in Victoria, this is the place.
Baan Thai is a good restaurant you will not be dissapointed. Thier Phad Thai is sourer in comparison with other Thai restaurants in the city such as Siam. It all has to do with personal preference. This restaurant will be enjoyed by some but maybe not others. I personally am not a regular but would not object to a meal there
There are two great places for Thai food in Victoria, and Baan Thai is one of them. I usually get the noodle dishes like the pad Thai, but everything is good. Apps I've gotten spring rolls and they were good. You can pick your level of spice that you want for many dishes, so if you can't handle spices stick to the 1. The service isn't bad at all.
Can get a little crowded at times though so be warned.
Excellent Thai food. Lunch specials are great for less than $10, and you can easily do dinner for 2 for less than $30. They have the best pad thai, and curry. The service is great, casual and very friendly. Definitely the best Thai food in town.
My family and I will drive from Nanaimo to eat at Baan Thai. The restaurant is very crowded and the service is less than impressive. I'm not sure if it was one of the owners that seated us last time but she was rude! Plain and simple. There is a gentleman server there that always gets a great tip from us because he treats us so well. We keep going back for the food, the food is amazing. Fortunately Baan Thai is not the only thai restaurant in Victoria.
