Azuma Sushi is a newcomer to the Victoria sushi scene. Serving up Japanese classics made to order with only the freshest ingredients.
My family and I love Azuma Sushi!! Azuma always has great healthy meals, the sushi is always fresh, the food always tasty, and the service is always quick and friendly.. Steak Sauce and rice is always awesome!! Not forgetting to mention their incredibly reasonable prices... We have eaten in many Japanese Restaurants, and have found them extremely over priced.. we have never been disappointed eating at Azuma with price or quality.. Great place to eat out...Kid friendly....
We loved this restaurant. Just a little more (dollar or two) than what we are used to in Vancouver, but much much better. The food was great! I ordered a bento box with tempura, and the tempura was perfectly cooked and much less greasy than I am used to. The chicken was not covered in slimy skin, and the teriyaki sauce was great! The rice had a nice sesame sauce on it too, nice FRESH salad and much more that just one cut up leaf as is found in usual sushi places. I ordered a coke, and got a slice of lemon on top! Just perfect for a hot day. Tea came the second we were seated, and the other food was prompt. The miso soup was the best I've had in a long time, plenty of tofu and green onions, not skimpy. The decor was fine, generic Asian style, but again, more effort than the usual sushi place. We would definitely recommend this place and I even took a business card to make sure I remember where to find it next time I go to Victoria!
Azuma has consistently delivered high quality food as far as I'm concerned. Admittedly, service can be slow on a Friday or Saturday night. When I'm eating sushi/sashimi, I don't mind the chefs taking due care in food preparation. Too fast = poor presentation and texture.
I once had the steak special, and it was delicious. No complaints about any experience here.
I've gone to Azuma four or five times. Each timer I've gone we have had to wait for at least 15 minutes even though we could see empty tables. The girls at the front just stand there, chatting, yawning and generally ignoring everyone. Once we were seated we usually got our orders taken pretty quickly. On the busy nights it took almost an hour to get our food. Food was not bad, just okay, in my mind. I happened to be looking on the VIHA site though, where the health inspectors put their reports and found out that Azuma has apparently been given warnings for there being rat droppings near the food prep areas. Haven't been back since.
The sushi is fresh! The terriyaki is very tasty! I love their rice and sauce! We always seem to order the same things every time! We order karaage chicken, udon, Tempura Rolls, Tempura Shrimp and Terriyaki Salmon, Chicken and Beef! We go there whenever there is a family birthday! The people are very nice and friendly! Very attentive. They take food allergies very seriously and are very accommodating when you let them know you have a food allergy. Thank goodness for Azuma Sushi!
I went for the all you can eat dinner. Bad decision.
The chicken teriyaki was tasteless and rubbery. The sashimi was watery and tasted like they had just thawed it out. The sushi rolls were all right in general. The only good thing on the all you can eat menu was the agadeshi tofu! Best agadeshi tofu I have never tasted.
It was slow when we were there, yet it took a while for the waitress to come and take our orders. After we were served our first orders, she apparently left and no one was there to serve us. We had to flag down another waitress to serve us.
All in all, if you want all you can eat sushi, go to Vancouver.
As I am part Japanese and grew up eating Japanese food, I'm a tough critic. There are sooo many Japanese restaurants in Victoria and the majority of them are not worth trying. Azuma is a great lunch spot as it is right downtown and they always offer a decent bento box lunch special. My favourite is the chicken katsu although I sometimes wish the portions were a bit bigger. The service is decent as well, although one of my biggest problems with Japanese restaurants is when the staff is not Japanese (ie Chinese) and they cannot pronounce the names properly and have no knowledge of what they are serving. It's not enough to just look Asian, you should know what you are talking about! I've never been for dinner and I don't think I would go. I would much rather go to Japanese Village and get outstanding food. Yes, it's pricier there, but well worth it.
This was a great place to eat. The service was prompt, and they kept coming around to keep our hot tea filled, and check on us. The atmosphere was great, with a contemporary, Asian decor and soothing Japanese music playing.
Oh yeah, the food... We ordered the Chicken Katsu and Tempura Bento Boxes, as well as California, Shrimp Tempura, and Dynamite sushi rolls. All of the food was great, but the Dynamite Roll was, well Dynamite!
It was so good, we ordered a 2nd Dynamite Roll for the family to share before we could leave.
