5th Street Bar & Wood Fired Grill boasts one of Vancouver Island's few wood-fired rotisseries. Gas fireplaces on our two patios create a cozy European ambiance for savouring fresh pastas and gourmet pizzas. Signature dishes include spit-roasted chicken, rotisserie smoked meats, juicy steaks, grilled ribs, as well as daily features that include fresh seafood.
I've been going to the fifth street for about 8 years now, and the quality of food for the price is fantastic. I never leave disappointed with the food, but the service on the other hand...not so good. We go to restaurants, we pay good money, we deserve to be treated better than they treat us there. They are an extremely busy restaurant most times, so I imagine dealing with disgruntled patrons is difficult. However, a smile and a little conversation definitely wouldnt hurt their tip jar, would it?
They are a great place to go for some good food, just remember not to expect much from the wait staff...
We went tonight for a quick bite to eat and were seated in five minutes, which I thought was nice, but then they seated us on their back patio (which does not have very nice ambiance at 9pm at night in the cold...). Also, it was very loud and echoing because of the cement. The service was okay, and the server was fairly attentive until we got our food but after that she basically ignored us, not offering drink refills or to take our dirty dishes away. The big problem, though, was ordering the back bacon and pineapple pizza. Apparently, the restaurant orders the garbage leftovers from some meat packing plant and pawns them off on their poor customers as 'back bacon', when really all you get on your pizza (LITERALLY) is huge chunks of fat. Back bacon is a lean meat! When I questioned the "meat" on my pizza, the server said that's just how it is and bacon is fatty, basically, so get over it. Even though back bacon is not the same as strip bacon and is not supposed to be fatty like that. No discount or apology or anything, even though I showed her the disgusting fat blobs on my plate. She even said a lot of people have had this reaction and sometimes a customer *might* be able to ask for ham instead of 'back bacon' (globs of fat), but only maybe, and that's just the way the bacon comes to them. I know people like this restaurant, but I think people should know how completely disgusting this so-called "back bacon" they have is before they order the pizza and have to pay for it. Gross gross gross is all I can say.
I went to this restaurant with some work mates as a goodbye to one of our friends who was leaving the country for 2 years. We had made a reservation for 15 people. On arriving, we were told that we had a 2 hour time limit. We were quite shocked as this had never been mentioned in the booking of the table. It didn't help that our server was atrocious. It took over 25 minutes for us to get drinks, not to mention it took her two tries to remember our order. While the food was good, we felt rushed. We hurried to finish our meal and then were made to wait almost 35 minutes to pay as the server wanted to take all our money at once, and then didn't come back to the table. Management didn't seem to take our concerns very seriously. While the food was good, I woulnd't recommend it as a place to go with friends to have fun. Remember, you only have 2 hours.
I like how the menu is set up but they do not have a lot to offer. After the first couple times you go there, unless you like eating the same thing everytime there isnt much selection.
One time it took us over an hour to get our meals and people had been in and out who had come after us.
Don't Sit on the back patio, its covered with a sick white tarp that makes you feel like you are eating in a construction zone.
It is also very loud if you go at night and the tables are very very close together.
Decent quality of food and portions.
5th street's menu offers a choice from a $5,$10,$15 dollar meal, so you can choose from a variety of items in your own price range. I was always able to find something I enjoyed eatting at 5th street, i've always enjoyed their soups, and the roast chicken dishes they offer are quite enjoyable. Everytime i've been in there it has been quite busy...low lighting and a little loud(not that it bothered me)
