Best value in Victoria - nice all-rounder restaurant...
By dux23 of Victoria, BC (41 Reviews)

I am an Toronto expatriate living in Victoria, and I love the whole West Coast fusion thing... but when my parents come out - it's always been tricky to find a restaurant that is decent and suits both their traditional anglo-american unadventurous palatte and my foodie whims. No more is this an issue since discovering 5th Street!

Portions are generous and there's tremendous value with $5 / $10 / $15 and $20 plates. The selection is great and you can get everything from tuna tataki to pastas and pizza. Drink selections are solid and they have some of the more inventive Caesars in town.

The westside patio with fireplace is the spot to be in the summer. I'm not sure what it is about 5th Street, though - the inside can get rather loud at times. They should maybe look at adding screens or something to deflect sound, because if you get a table that's going to town on the drinks it can be rather disruptive. Generally though, it's a nice environment - nothing fancy, but neither lowbrow on the restaurant side. If you want total casual - go to the pub - which has the same menu and drunk offerings, but a TV etc and more modest decor and furnishings.

Service can be a little inconsistent as they are smoking busy a lot of the time, but while I've had minor neglectful experiences on the part of staff, no major complaints.

All in all, this is a great restaurant, and probably the best value for a sit-down meal in Victoria.

A real gem - highly recommended!

I've been to this place 3 times in the past 3 weeks after it was recommended by a friend. It used to be Gordon's Sporting Goods store way back when. It looks like things may have improved over the last year having read some of the reviews below.

I think this place is a real gem for the following reasons:

-it smells good when you walk in. You can tell right away the food is prepared fresh, not a ton of deep fried things, and the place is kept clean.
-has a pub and restaurant side depending on what kind of atmosphere you want. Both use the same menu which is nice since some places charge more to eat in the retaurant side.
-food is fresh and well prepared. Pizzas are made from fresh dough not forzen slabs, the seafood special I had one time was perfectly cooked and tasty with a fresh fruit salsa on salad greens. Wings are uniquely flavoured and also tasty. Bascally everything is done well with attention.
-drink specials every night and appropriately priced beer sleeves (which are not advertised as "pints" either like some places)
-innovative dinner menu that organizes things by price (5, 10, 15, 20 dollars) rather than by appy or entre. Some things are very good deals (i.e a half chicken for 10 bucks)

The only negative things about this place are:

-the outdoor seating area regular tables are too high - or the seats are too low. I feel like a kid sitting at them as the table sits at chest level. Maybe this is designed so you can eat right off the plate without cutlery.
-the pub side can get VERY noisy from people talking. I think it has to do with the fact that all the walls and floors are solid surfaces and reflect sound a lot.
-food wait times vary, depending on what you order and how busy it is. However, they state this on the menu for all to know beforehand plus you can ask your server about what's fastest to get.

Overall, this is one of the best places in town to eat even though its not in the best part of town. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

If you want good food, decent service, and good prices, go here. I've eaten at this restaurant several times and it is always busy, yet the service is prompt, friendly and your water glass never goes below half full. The food is good too, especially their rotisserie chicken - the meat is moist and tender. The menu is arranged by price so whatever your budget you can find something tasty to eat. A good bet is the $10 1/2 chicken with mashed potatoes - this was certainly enough for dinner plus ample leftovers. Their pizzas and crumble dessert is good too!

im very disapointed with their service. i've been there 5 times now with my boyfriend. im a server myself so i try not to gudge so much. but this time i did. i dont know what it is but the people there just dont have heart in what they do. not all just the one we seen. the thing that i dont like everytime we go there is that we would wait, patiently and those who would walk by or even look over would not even have a smile on there face or even say "hello". for me when i serve wether or not im busy i try to let my customer no that we notice them and we'll be right there. there nothing speical about this place for me to say much. all i can say is that i do very much love there food but dislike there service very much. the tip we gave should have gone to the kitchen instead. i do hope they would improve.

Unbelievably poor service

The last two times we went here we were shocked by how bad the service was. The first time, 4 tables were seated and had their orders taken after us, yet they all had their food before we did (some of them had order the same things that we had) one table even paid their bill and left before we got our food. The server automatically brought vinegar and ketchup to the other tables with the meals but we had to ask for ours and then the server never came back with it. Had to ask another server for water and a napkin, that also never came. Was asked for ID when using my debit card... Then we tried it again and the server wouldn't even bother to reach onto the table to put down or pick up dishes.. she would point at the water glasses so we would pass them to her to fill. This is unfortunate because the menu is laid out very nicely, and some of the dishes are very tasty and interesting. If you do decide to brave the awful service go for the curry prawns with yam chips, although I really don't feel it is worth it when so many other places make great food without the attitude.

Nothing Special
By MariaEsylviano of victoria (10 Reviews)

I liked the way the food was put in price ranges on the menu. The food was alright but nothing special unless they happened to have the exact meal for your taste. Tons of Garlic which is not a bad thing in general but it might have been a little to much. The Noise level was high but the ambiance was alright. Like it says in the title: this place is nothing special but if its convenient for you then why not go? the service was fine and the server seemed nice enough and the food took an average time to arrive. A shrug but not an unhappy one as an overall reaction.

Just OK

I have been here a few times and it's OK. Just OK food, just OK service and just OK location. The prices are a bit high for what you get. The food and prices were better many years ago when they first opened but since then have just gone downhill. There's not many other restaurants in the neighbourhood so that's probably why it continues to be busy, but I'm not in a big hurry to go back.

Every time I have gone here the service has been amazing. I wanted to say this first off because the staff here constantly impress me. The servers are really busy every time I come in but they all seem to be very aware of their sections and always acknowledge everyone when they walk by with a smile or a meal suggestion. These little gestures along with timely and efficient service is something that really stands out about 5th Street for me.

I love the layout of the menus it is great because I am generally on a budget and this helps out immensely. The quesadilla is the best ever, I love the flavors and the ingredient combo, soo soo good. I had the coconut prawns the other day there and although they were really good I was sad because there were not very many prawns, I was left wanting more!!! The desserts there were really good, I cant remember what we had but I do remember loving it so thats a good thing right?

Thank you for being one of my favorites 5th street, for a lot of different reasons.

Lovely Local Hangout

So I enjoy the 5th Street. The service is average, but for myself, and most people I know who go there, we aren't going there for the service. We like it because its a great place to hangout. I slip in there occassionally for a few quiet ones after work, to catch up with friends, maybe watch the hockey game, and have a tasty and reasonably priced bite to eat. The atmosphere is alway good when I have been there, but I'm speaking specifically about the bar side. I haven't been there for a sit down meal with my partner yet and I'm not entirely sure that we will. Its just not that type of place for us. The drinks are a very good value, perhaps some of the best prices. That keeps up patronage. I like it, and will continue to go there! Well done!

Meh night at 5th street

Submitted Monday, October 11, 2010 - 8:09pm [Dine in]

Going in on a night where the Vancouver Canucks are playing a game, we expected this place to be packed. This was definitely not the case (and probably due to being thanksgiving Monday), and we were seated quickly.

The host was pleasant and we got our water quickly... and then had to wait about 5 minutes before finally meeting our server. Our drink order was taken quickly, and when he returned with my boyfriend's beer he took our food order.
I excused myself to go to the washroom and by the time I was back our starter was already at the table (this was not that surprising, as we had just ordered the house fries as a starter, a quick dish to prepare).

While we were eating the starter our server came once and filled up my water, and before we were even finished our starter, our meals arrived (we had both ordered the bison burger, usually a favorite) being delivered not by our server.

I started on the ceasar side salad, which, in essence was good, however the croutons were stale (which my partner enjoyed) and my salad was overdressed (also enjoyed by my partner, haha).

The burger itself was tasty, however the meat to bun ratio was way off from how I remembered it (there was about an inch of bun surrounding the patty on all sides) and the bun was a bit stale as well.

This entire time our server did not appear once (as I said, he was not the one to deliver the food, and did not appear again until both of us had finished our entree), and as I watched him it seemed all his tables were clumped on the other side of the restaraunt and we were his only table in this area.
My boyfriend's drink remained empty from the beginning of the entrees, and my entree plate was taken away before our dirty appetizer plate was removed.

May return for cheap beer, but won't be coming back for quite some time.

Best value in Victoria, hands down.

Love this restaurant. Good menu selection, excellent value, and fast, friendly service. 5th Street is unparalleled in Victoria for its ability to be perfect for pretty much any (non-romantic) occasion. With the same menu in the pub and restaurant, you can enjoy a meal with family or watch a game on the big screen, and still enjoy your favorite dish.

Of particular note:

The Caesar selection - 5th Street has at least five types of Caesar on the menu... sure to please anybody with a fondness for Clamato.

The rotisserie chicken dinner - a succulent, slow-roasted 1/2 chicken and potato for only $10 (even though you now add $2 for vegetables, it's still an excellent value, and the menu item they are best-known for).

I have been to this restaurant many times now and thoroughly enjoy the experience. I have tried many things on the menu and haven't come across anything I didn't like. The food is well cooked and beautifully seasoned. It's a great value for the quality and quantity of food. I usually have to take home the rest of my meal. It is always busy at meal time, so it can get loud, but in a good, happy patrons, way. My boyfriend and I never have to wait long for a table. Service is consistantly good, in my opinion. I wouldn't judge service on on night because everyone has their bad days. I highly recommend the house fries!

Restaurant and pub can be a little loud, but the food is wonderful, the restaurant waitstaff are delightful, not so much on the pub side, and the service is fast, friendly, and incredibly fun.

Wood fired pizzas are always a safe choice, but the menu boasts many lovely meals as well, including a very messy but delicious burger, a great quesadilla, amazing corn and chicken chowder, mouth-watering pastas, and my personal favorite, prawns in a saffron infused cream sauce with yam shoestrings.

Horrible Service > 1 hour wait for food
By mprsdrose of Victoria (2 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 3:34pm [Dine in]

Went for a group lunch with 15 people, and waited almost 1.5 hours for lunch to arrive. Only 1 pasta, most were burgers, salads, and chicken strips.

When asked, the waitress told us that good food takes a long time to prepare and that their menu warns people they could wait an hour for food because the kitchen services the whole restaurant and pub. Sorry, but none of that food takes that long to prepare. The restaurant side was almost empty, just another large group when we arrived. On the pub side, 3 or 4 tables of 2-4 people. 3 of our people sat at a higher table in the pub, and received their order after 15 mins; apparently the waitress told them she would squeeze their order in ahead of ours.

Our organizer had called ahead to reserve a table, and ask about pre-ordering, and was told the pub only needed 15mins warning. We arrived at 11:50am, ordered and didn’t see our order arrive until 1:15pm. Definitely not a good place to go for lunch with a group. When the food did arrive, no one came by to apologize, yet the bills were all ready and printed. Thankfully, they didn’t add the gratuity. Most of us didn’t leave any.

The food was tasty; too bad our experience with the poor service overshadowed the experience. Too add insult to injury, they charged me $5 to add a chicken breast to a salad, and brought me a different soup than what I ordered.

Careful with the back bacon
By tiltal of Victoria (2 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 12:13am [Dine in]

We went tonight for a quick bite to eat and were seated in five minutes, which I thought was nice, but then they seated us on their back patio (which does not have very nice ambiance at 9pm at night in the cold...). Also, it was very loud and echoing because of the cement. The service was okay, and the server was fairly attentive until we got our food but after that she basically ignored us, not offering drink refills or to take our dirty dishes away. The big problem, though, was ordering the back bacon and pineapple pizza. Apparently, the restaurant orders the garbage leftovers from some meat packing plant and pawns them off on their poor customers as 'back bacon', when really all you get on your pizza (LITERALLY) is huge chunks of fat. Back bacon is a lean meat! When I questioned the "meat" on my pizza, the server said that's just how it is and bacon is fatty, basically, so get over it. Even though back bacon is not the same as strip bacon and is not supposed to be fatty like that. No discount or apology or anything, even though I showed her the disgusting fat blobs on my plate. She even said a lot of people have had this reaction and sometimes a customer *might* be able to ask for ham instead of 'back bacon' (globs of fat), but only maybe, and that's just the way the bacon comes to them. I know people like this restaurant, but I think people should know how completely disgusting this so-called "back bacon" they have is before they order the pizza and have to pay for it. Gross gross gross is all I can say.

The restaurant was full which is always a very good sign and we were not disappointed. We were promptly seated on the heated patio by the brick fireplace. Service was also prompt and very cordial. As it happened the lamb and the salmon were dinner specials and they are our favourites so we appreciate an excellent chef. Both were perfectly cooked and very professionally and attractively presented. With wine, dessert and coffee, it was excellent value.

The past reviews I do not think present a holsitic picture of the service and food quality of fifth street, and I would assume that the reason why there are so many negative responses is because people generally become more impassioned to report on negative rather than positive experiances. I have been a patron of this restaurant for a a long time and consider it to be one of the finer western food restaurants in the city. Reasonably priced and very good food. Its a perfect place for a date or family gathering. Its too bad people have had bad experiances I know individuals that work there and from someone who has worked in the restaurant bussiness the training program for their servers is impressive in comparison to other similar establishments in victoria

We arrived for dinner at 4:45pm and were mistakingly given lunch menus instead of dinner menus. As this was our first time eating here we did not know there were seperate menu's; lunch, dinner and late night. This was disappointing because the lunch menu didn't have alot to offer. The tables are very, very close together and it is very loud inside. The service was horrible! We waited for about 15 minutes just to get drinks, and had about 5 or 6 different people come to our table instead of just one server, all of which were not overly friendly. Also when we arrived we were given a paper explaining there was draw that our server was supposed to give us tickets to enter and we never did get them. The food was okay, but it wasn't anything special. Overall it wasn't a very good experience and I wouldn't recommend going there.

My Mother and I went out together on Valentine's day, as I was not old enough to drink at that point I asked what was on the non-alcoholic menu, she replied "we don't have a non-alcoholic menu, so, your just going to have to think,in your head"
...It was shocking and an insult considering the simplicity of the question.
Throughout my stay I felt uncomfortable. When the food arrived I was very pleased with the results, although I had to pack most of it to go due to the sickening feeling of disrespect.
Our drinks remained empty for over 15 minutes, and when I mentioned my concerns to the waitress she figured she used that manor with everyone.

A good waitress/waiter is a gamble
