Kintaro Ramen788 Denman Street, Vancouver
Appealing food, unappealing location

Kintaro is one of those places that are too good, but scare people away because of their claustrophobicly small location and long lineups outisde. It is rare to walk past by it an not see crowds of people lined up. I don't know if it is on purpose, but going in groups is the last thing you want to do there. Get your food, and get out.

Don't mean to be cynical, but part of the meal is how much you enjoy it. The noodles are excellent, one of the best I've had from all the places I have tried in Vancouver (miso, spicy garlic ramen), but I just wish I wasn't so rushed all the time.

Create your own pasta?

Cheap and pasta is not really my thing, but I had to make an exception for Basil. I had heard great things about it so, without a better place or thing to do, we came here on Saturday night for dinner. We had been here in the past and wanted to try out the create your own. Essentially, you get to choose your own pasta, veggies, sauce and extras. There is a lot to choose from and the restaurant has paid extra concern for healthy aka vegetarian, organic ingredients. The ratios are good for the quantity and price - yes, you might not be getting authentic Italian pasta, but the taste is still very good.

I seriously don’t know what the hype is about this place, I have ordered before and didn't find the food so wow. So when by boyfriend and I had to change our plans and he suggested this place as the next best (and closest alternative) I wasn't particularly jumping up and down.

There was a 30 min wait minimum which further discouraged me, but seeing the food being served at the patio and the smells entering my famished system, I slowly started developing a liking (or a softer heart at least). One of the staff members started talking to us, and led us to the bar to make the waiting a little better.

After a couple of drinks, we finally got our coveted seat. Appies flew by, and on we were for the food. It was mattar paneer and chicken coconut with some naan to pair it with. The coconut was a suggestion from our waiter, and had this creamy texture that was very enticing. The meal didn't come out too bad for two, and we're thinking about coming back to try the buffet. Let's see how it goes!

Well I just had high expectations based on reviews, this place left us disapointed (two couples). The resturaunt itself is nice, warm and quite in places that was good, unfortunately the food preparation seemed quite slapped together The scallops appetizer was two scallops on a plate for over $18. My maybe one cup of risotto with mushrooms was over $30 it was bland and had a very starchy taste to it with very little mushrooms. Bread came cold and was served with hummus...My husband had his drink taken before he even finished it. $100+ per person not including alcohol.
To much to choose from in the city we will not return.

7 days a week from 9-5 at the bakery, north of the train tracks in Port Moody, bridge at Moody Street from either Clarke Road or St. Johns Street.

It moved 2 years ago to:
2617 Murray Street
Port Moody, BC V3H1X1
Tel: (604) 939-1335

Buckwheat is a personal favourite, but the sun-dried tomato and olives is very, very good. Also Fusion (Indian flavours), Honey Rye, Walnut-Raisin) and their Coroni white breads.

Baguettes, Portuguese buns and a large counter of Italian and modern pastries.
Espresso machine always working. A few tables inside, but carry your goodies over the bridge to Rocky Point Park for a picnic.

I went there with my gf and her folks got some good Indian on Davie as we heard!! Big big mistake as the food was the crappiest Indian an Indian can eat!! The samosas were unsalted and bland and the prawn killed a was soggy over cooked prawns
And cold! SURPRISING!

The main course which included a chicken dish, lamb and fish were just BAD. I was so disappointed that I did tell the server and he was so rude about it (said go somewhere else) inspite of the whole place being empty the people were not accommodating (no wonder it was empty)!!

Bad overpriced and under serviced food! Please never go!!

The dining area is pretty basic, our table was missing condiments, but it is clean and comfortable enough.

I've been here many times but hadn't been back for awhile since moving out of the area.

Regardless, the staff are still, as always, friendly, courteous, patient, and quick. The food was delicious (curry fish, spicy dumplings, a veg dish) and rolled out quickly. The price is reasonable (lunch special $7.95 for a large plate and bowl of rice).

I love Green Lettuce!

Ate here I. The summer not long after it first opened. My friend and I had veggie burgers with fries and yam fries. The fries were fine. The burgers crumbled as we ate; they were unique for sure, made of what we thought was quinoa, but the things just fell apart and tasted b-l-a-n-d. And the price for two meals was absolutely ridiculous. We waited 10 minutes for them to put this slop together. Every time we pass Relish now we laugh about their horrible, overpriced veggie burgers.

I've been here 4 times, twice to eat in. The last time I went was Saturday Oct 31,2015. Had a chicken burrito, friend had sofritas burrito. The two staff making the food were not friendly and didn't seem happy to be there. The cashier was also not a pleasant individual. It wasn't busy (maybe 1/2 the seating was taken) and the lineup was only about 4-5 people long. Usually I've gone in and the place is packed, lineup to the door or out the door.

I'm not a Chipotle burrito lover, I'd rather Steamrollers or Red Burrito, plus I find the price at Chipotle to be high and the servings too big.

My main beef this time was the absolute FILTH of the dining area. The garbage: overflowing. The floor, tables, even the SEATS had garbage strewn everywhere.

A staff member sat next to us (in uniform) to eat with his friend who placed a knapsack on the floor. A bottle in the knapsack started leaking to the point that my friend told him there was a huge puddle under it. I mean huge=a 3 ft wide puddle. The friend of the staff member said to him, 'maybe u better get that cleaned up' or something and the staff said his shift was over anyway.

When we left, the puddle was still there.

One staff person did a quick garbage sweep of some tables while we were there but overall, the restaurant was still a pig sty.

Management: happy employees do a better job and treat customers with kindness. Hire more staff or re-organize them. The place is a dump.

We frequently take-out from this restaurant.

Pros: The food portions are very large and we always order the house roll.

Cons: There has been a few mix-ups (twice out of ~12 orders) with the food we ordered. I.e. We ordered Unagi Roll (Eel), but received some other roll in the box.

I always recommend double checking your order in the box before leaving.

Solid sushi restaurant when no order mix-ups happen.

Used to be a great deli for many years under different owners. Had the worst pastrami sandwich of my life. It was small & so salty I could barely finish it. Sort of self serve & asked for water which you needed to fight the salt but never got it. The sandwich was small & got cole slaw which was ok & it was $ 14.75. Never go back

We came in for a birthday celebration on Thursday and the place was packed. Our reservation was for 7 pm but when we arrived at around ~6.30ish there was hardly any room to move around. Once we got to our seats, everything went by smoothly. The atmosphere is very warm, calm and welcoming, and the staff is precise and attentive. Our tortellini gorgonzola was delicious, as were the rest of the dishes. Coming here at first might not be very appetizing, small stairs going up to the second floor but once you get inside and try the food is it definitely worth it. Plus, the view you get from Robson is unparalleled.

Mistaken order... gone right?

I had never heard of this place until recently when I saw an ad of them online. Called them up to double check, a standard practice I do with every new place I am going to eat. Call me paranoid but after inquiring them and checking up their website, I was convinced.

The pizza took a little longer than expected to arrive. I mistakenly ordered the special preparation of my pizza, deep dish style and apparently it needs to be heater for longer because of its shape and the amount of sauce and cheese that go into it.

We had the house special with LOTS of toppings - pepperoni, mushrooms, ham, green peppers...and on and on. You name it. The taste was delicious, but a little too much for me. I prefer their normal style pizza, but my roomie really liked the leftovers.

I've been to this restaurant a few times , twice in the past three weeks. The delicious smell of curry hits you as soon as you open the door. I must say they are very consistent. I love tandoori chicken and theirs is some of the best I have ever had. The right amount of spice, pipping hot and juicy, never dry. Quite the feat as I have had some very dry tandoori chicken at some places.

Their curries are delicious as well and always spiced the way you want it. If you want hot be warned , their hot really is hot. I also love their naan. Always order the garlic naan, hot and fresh.

As for service I have never had a problem. Usually there when you need them. For me, this is one of the best Indian Restaurants in Vancouver.

Good but too tiny
By michwilliams of vancouver (12 Reviews)

Kintaro has been a staple for me as long as I can remember. It serves classic ramen noodles in the most tasty and inventive ways. While there are the standard options to choose from, it is also home to the cheese ramen. Not for the faint hearted, it is actually quite thick, and the broth is a little too salty for my taste (apparently not for my bf's). Im not much of a cheese fan; the spicy garlic option is much tastier in my opinion.

And while the ramen is one of the best I've had, the experience could do with a little improvement. At least in my most recent experience. Service is extremely slow and the server can be a little disinterested in serving you sometimes. Going in groups of more than 3 is a problem, as the place is tiny and is full of people. We always have to wait to get seated and once inside it is quite narrow and cramped which makes one get claustrophobic.

Great impression of Chicago pizza
By michwilliams of vancouver (12 Reviews)

Upon recommendation from a friend, I decided to get some pizza from this place. I wasn't really sure about it but the prices seemed decent and the website looked reliable, so I decided to place an order. I got a Chicago chicken deep dish crust and found it's taste interesting, but in a good way. The pizza was thick, almost like a pie, and I had to eat with with a fork and knife. I've never been to Chicago but this pizza was pretty good. It comes with lots of cheese and tomato in this style, which was a plus, especially after a long day at work and school.

The delivery is timely; the delivery boy even waited for me once when I took forever to come down. This is the second time I am ordering from the experience I found them to be good enough for my money.

An All you can eat that you can actually eat
By michwilliams of vancouver (12 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, October 13, 2015 - 11:11pm [Dine in]

For a place that advertises themselves as having an all you can eat lunch buffet, it is pretty good. The food did not look soggy or old and untasty. There's lots of places that are close to university which are cheaper but this one takes the cake for the food. The chicken curry is delicious - I love the fact that they have made the sauce thick and consistent and not too watery. I got the low spicy level and still managed to enjoy the taste. My roomie opted for the aloo gobhi and eggplant and found an array of vegan dish dishes to try from. The dine-in menu can be a off our budget to make it a regular place to eat, but for the lunch buffet or daily deals it is good enough.

Second time in this place in the past three weeks mainly for their $3.00 Pabst Beer Happy Hour special and the big screen tv to watch the ball game right up at the bar.

Came in was greeted by the hostess immediately, told her I was going to sit up at the bar. Proceeded to sit at the big long bar table with exactly two other people there. Plunked myself down and waited. The bartender was consumed with something on the phone had his back towards me no acknowledge yet of my presence, no glance my way , no "just a minute be right with you". So far hasn't even noticed me. By the way, I am huge.
Ok, here comes someone else behind the bar. No acknowledgement of my presence from this guy either.
Walks right by me and goes to this couple one stool over because they wanted to pay their bill. Still no glance my way, no acknowledgement of my presence from bartender number two. They aren't even busy.
I thought okay after he takes care of this person I am sure one of them will ask me if i want something because that is why I am sitting at the bar at a restaurant that serves both beverages and food. Bartender number one, the guy on the phone when I first got there has now left the bar area is doing something else. Bartender number two takes the money from the couple paying they leave and he disappears. The invisible man grabs his bag and leaves Wings most likely never to come back again.

A lot has been said about the lousy service in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland in general. I have received some excellent service at places, mediocre but most often lousy, inattentive just plain bad service. You really have to shake your head. Serves expect tips, 15 per cent, 20 per cent in some places now they expect you to hit 25 per cent on the debit or credit card machine. In my view, many don't earn it. Is it lack of interest in the job they are doing, boredom, pure laziness? Many times it's not because they are run off their feet and they are just too damn busy. I believe a lot of the poor service you receive is also because of poor training and leadership.

Anyway, that's my little "service" rant about Wings.

First time there ordered their happy hour wing special. For a place with the name "Wings" in their name they should stand out and excel at what they present. For the most part these were sad. A small portion with more bone and skin than anything else.

We hit Yolk's at their funky place on Hastings and Clark last weekend for breakfast and really enjoyed it. Wife had a double smoked bacon double eggs on lemon truffle hashbrowns with sharp white cheddar and I settled on their apparently famous chicken and waffles. Wife's hashbrowns were yummy, I pinch as many as I could get away with. The 2 pieces of fried chicken were juicy and crunchy and made a nice contrast with the sweet waffle. Probably the best chicken and waffles I've had in a while. Service was smooth and friendly with our chatty servers. Great breakfast experience, very reasonable prices.......we'll be back with friends while they are still at this location.
