I’ve got to admit I was having my doubts about this place before coming here. When you have in mind ‘dinner’, the last place you want to go to is a pub. But because I was with my boyfriend and his friends, I had no other choice but to tag along.
The pub is truly Irish – as soon as you walk in, you’ll see Irish signs everywhere (Guinness, etc.). The number of 20-something year old's was overwhelming, and made me feel old. The food, as I was expecting it to be, was so-so. I had yam fries and blarney burger. The burger seemed sloppily put together and lacked taste. Had it not been for the shepherd's pie I would have deducted another star.
The food is reliable which one expects with chain restaurants. The service has always been quite good at this location and I enjoy dropping in for lunch from time to time. I enjoy the dry ribs, short rib sandwich, burgers and salads. The Fawlty Tower martini is an occasional treat to enjoy.
I will suggest reviewing the bill carefully as I failed to do so last visit and ended paying what I believe was quite a bit more for what I had. I didn't really even look at it until the credit card bill arrived and wondered how The dry ribs appetizer ($10.75) with add on Caesar salad mini (not on menu but usually charged ($4.00) and one regular Fawlty Tower Martini ($9.00) plus tax and tip ended up being over $41.00. My best guess is I was charged for something I did not have or maybe charged for the full sized salad meal which I did not have. Altogether for an appetizer, mini appetizer salad and one martini that is expensive.
Overall though it is a decent place to eat, just double check your bill when it arrives. I usually do but was careless that day and paid for it.
Kintaro Ramen gives you the perfect combination of good food at a good price. It is the place I go to devotedly if I want ramen. The shio ramen is unparalleled - it comes with green onions, bean sprouts and BBQ pork. The place is kind of crowded and many times you have to share table with others, but I don't mind. A lot of people complain that it gets too hot inside but its like they say, you get what you pay for!
While this place is highly rated as one of the best for Afghan food in Vancouver, I would have to disagree. I have been to other Afghan restaurants and they did not taste like a mediterranean/Greek spin off! This cannot be the best that there is in Vancouver.
Don't get me wrong; some of their plates, like the lamb shoulder, were good but, it just didn't taste Afghan. And for the prices being charged, I think I deserved better. I mean, some of the food seemed to be prepared haphazardly: the rice was a little hard and seemed to be undercooked.
I don't mean to be entirely negative, as there were some good things about this restaurant as well (service, environment) but for me, the food was a deal breaker.
This is definitely a place I can only afford to go to on special occasions. What first impacts you about this restaurant is its ambience. There is an outdoor patio that is lovely and quite romantic. Make sure you have a reservation before coming here because it does get rather busy sometimes, especially for dinner.
Onto the food now…I played it safe and ordered nothing out of the extraordinary. The food was not exceptional; I found the gnocchi to be a little lackluster in taste. The wine list is pretty extensive and if you are not a wine expert like myself, it can be a little overwhelming! The waiter helped me out though. I really liked dessert; I had the cioccolato and it was fabulous. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I am a little biased in that sense, but even my boyfriend, who isn’t, liked it.
So I'm having mixed feelings about this place. The food never makes me go "wow", especially for its price, but the ambience + dessert + drinks make up for it.
There's nothing like some good old gelato when its summer. This place has an amazing amount of gelato to chose from: over 70 flavours last time I asked! I always go for an unexpected and crazy flavor, like hedgehog or green tea. While the staff is normally friendly and courteous, the huge line and wait is always a bummer.
Besides that, I wish they would update their whole payment process. They don't take credit cards which can be a pain, as I usually don't carry cash with me. Prices are not cheap, so why make it more difficult to pay?
We just had dim sum with the family at this very consistent restaurant.
The food is always consistent; new items are regularly on the menu. The servers are professional.
What we do not expect to pay for, and what is not on the menu is poor treatment by the hostess. This is also a consistent aspect. We checked-in for our reservation with the hostess who was rude from the start: no eye contact, hollering tone of voice, no smile, and no communication to say that our table is or is not ready. While we waited with uncertainty, we noticed several other groups with the same party numbers--no reservations or later reservations, were seated ahead of us because they knew the various managers in black suits. We could understand the interchange among these people.
Suggestions to the owner: send your hostesses for WorldHost training, be fair to all customer reservations--honour their time.
Some of the best Indian food I've ever had!! All of the dishes were very flavorful and fresh. The service was very attentive and they make you feel like your right at home. This is my new favorite Indian restaurant.Absolutely wonderful. I have always enjoyed Indian food, the kheer variety and the fixed price made it so I could try far more dishes than I normally would. I would recommend this to anyone seeking excellent food for a great price
I usually order take out from Handi, I think I ate here once only? But I vaguely remember, so I can't really opine on that aspect. As far as the take-out goes, its been great so far. My order always comes relatively fast and most important of all, it comes hot!
The curry sauces are really delicious and tasty. I usually get the lamb curry (or something of lamb) or the palak paneer, and accompany it with some Indian rice. The take-out portions are quite generous and can easily fill one up. I usually end up with leftovers when I order from them but I just re-heat the food the next day and its all good.
Based on the positive reviews I found here, I went to Kobe for some good food. But what a bad dining experience it was. We had made a dinner reservation for 7 pm, but when we arrived, we had to wait for another thirty minutes or so to get seated. Really? Then what was the whole purpose of making a reservation?
The food is overly priced here. And even bland. The hibachi steak I ordered lacked seasoning and was quite bland. I know that in restaurants like these (Benihana, etc) we also pay for the show that is put on by the chefs, but this was simply missing from our chef. Our chef did not put on much of a show and was extremely sloppy. I don't know if it was because he was tired or something, but given that each one of us paid $70+ for our food, it was disappointing.
We had an unexpected dinner at this restaurant when a friend and I were strolling around downtown. We did not have a reservation so we had to wait a little to get seated, which only made us hungrier as we could smell the food. While we waited for our seats, the waiter suggested we order some drinks and so we went for it.
When we finally got our table, we ordered some calamari and a mixed platter for appetizers. The food was delicious. The shahi paneer was extremely good; the sauce had that thick, creamy characteristic, orangey look that it is supposed to have. As for my friend, she had beef saag. The food was brought promptly and hot, an important detail for any food to taste good. Half the taste goes away if you bring the food cold! Would come back for Indian food if I lived here.
Wow! Last night was so bad compared to our previous experiences that we will not return. They did not have parking in the back as the lot was filled with cars from bicycle rental shop in the same strip mall. The manager – Oriental fellow basically said too bad there is nothing they can do about it. Oh well. Our server – a lovely blonde girl was very good. She was very pleasant the best part of what was a very disappointing evening.
Our waitress explained that in addition to the regular menu and the 3 course special for $28.95 they also had a roast beef special for $18.95 that included lobster bisque or salad and came with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. I decided to go with the roast beef special and my husband decided to go with the 3 course meal. I told them that I wanted the roast beef rare. They said it might be more than rare but it would be no more than medium rare. I started off with the lobster bisque. It was a bit watery, not the greatest soup but for the price it was acceptable. My husband said his salad was very good. It was a good size and the greens were very fresh. For his entree my husband had the chicken breast with pancetta and penne pasta. He said it was okay, nothing special. My roast beef was not good at all. It had a funny texture to it and I did not enjoy it at all. When our lovely waitress asked how our meals were I told her that my dinner was not very good. She was very gracious, she apologized and asked if I would like to order something else. I replied that I would and she said she would bring me the menu again. The next thing I know the manager or whoever he is was standing by the table. He said that they had told me the beef might not be rare (that was only part of the issue – the main point was that the roast beef was probably one of the worst roast beef dinners that I’ve had). He refused to take the dish back to the kitchen. My husband said that he would change plates with me and offered me his chicken and he took the roast beef. The chicken was also very poorly prepared. My husband said that 1 of the pieces of roast beef was very well done. Dessert was a cheesecake that looked and tasted like it came from a supermarket. Through all this our waitress was so pleasant. I think she was very embarrassed by the way her co-worker had handled the whole situation.
We have gone to Ciao Bella on numerous occasions over the past few years and suggested it to friends as a place for dinner but after last night we will definitely not be going back. The gentleman who was there definitely needs to take some courses on good customer relations. You’ve lost clientele that frequented your restaurant on a regular basis. All this could be resolved by handling the situation the way that our waitress would have handled it. If you want crappy food that they will not allow you to return or compensate you for in any way then you should dine here. The manager will also treat you like you are dirt under his feet. There are too many really good Italian restaurants in Vancouver to be treated with such disrespect to eat crappy food.
The only reason for the 3 on Service is because of our waitress. If I was rating based on the manager I would give it a 1. I split the difference. I would have given her a 4 for service
This is probably the best Hong Kong Style Cafe in Vancouver in terms of food quality, variety, taste and value. Must try are: Hainan chicken, dried pork chop and beef brisket. Everything is tasty, you can't go wrong. Be sure to make reservations, line up could be long during peak meal times.
Food quality and service have gone downhill. Curry (Malaysian style) is the only thing that is still good. We had the 8-person dinner set last night which we regretted ordering due to limited choice of dishes and its portion - not enough for eight. Their claim to fame Hainan Chicken was blend and unappealing. Service was slow and sporadic, I don't recommend this place.
I definitely would never eat there again. Bland , and over priced for what you get....I ordered cheese bread, it was just bland mozza on a hot dog bun, dry ribs had no seasoning, and super dry because they were over cooked and it was 7$ for a hot dog bun with not even any flavor? Rip off....Pizza was par at best.... Ended up throwing most of the order out.
I treated my family to one of our favorite places. 6 of us. Seating is strained and could only find a couple of tables right by the very smelly washroom. People can barely squeeze past you to get in. We ordered our usual favorite chicken shawarma plates and one lamb kebab plate. The usually fabulous rice was now quite oily. The chicken shawarma was not as tasty as before and much more yellow. Tumeric? The lamb kebob was grissly, tough, raw and inedible. WOW!!!!!
Sorry I can't recommend this place any more. It has gone from great to very mediocre. Has the ownership changed?? The very stale faced indifferent woman taking our order was clearly new to us.
If you ignore my review and venture there make sure you get good seating or sit outside. Next door is a great looking place we will go to from now on.

The one big complaint I have with the Glowball Restaurants, why do they make their eating locations cramped?Why is everyone so close together, and put a bit of space with ambiance could make a difference with any meal.
I was in here with the lunch crowd, stuck side by side, and decided to try their fish n chip lunch box special. I really like the fish n chips, came out perfectly, crunch and the fries tasted really good. I did like their salad with vinaigrette dressing. As for the coleslaw, awful, think it maybe kimchi, but I didn't even try it after the first bite.
The fish n chips were a great deal for lunch and would go back to have it again, in the future.
The service I felt needed to be worked on, and for the managers in the corner, using their cellphones, laptops, ipads, yelling out across the floors to some trade person, left me wondering don't they have office??? I suggest all of you go in a back room to conduct your daily business, speak to trades, staff and suppliers, which I felt this was the main reason service lack any personal style. Take a look at the managers....
I would come back again for the fish n chips, and hope the service improves for my next visit.
I am not really acquainted to many places in Vancouver so I looked up some good cafes and found this one. Based on the positive reviews it got, I decided to check it out for myself.
The restaurant is really neatly decorated, but it is a little small. The quality of the food is amazing – fresh and best of all, inexpensive. The pancakes I had were fluffy and delicious, and the scrambled eggs were good as well. Oh, they serve some amazing organic coffee here. I think the whole experience was enhanced because of the staff. They were really warm and friendly at all times, despite being rather busy when I went.
This is probably the worst subway joint I have ever been to. The franchisee/owner is extremely rude and will give you an attitude if you ask her any question. She even swore at one of the other customers! Now, I am not from here but where have you seen something like that? It amazes me to see how she is still in business. The only reason why I came here was because it was close (unfortunately) to where I was staying.
As for the food itself the sandwiches weren't good. She doesn't seem to change the ingredients because they didn't taste fresh. And this is coming from someone who is not much of a picky eater. She would put very little of the vegetables I asked for (she literally counts them, one, two, three) and when I told her if she could put more, she yapped back at me saying that it would be an extra cost. Really? Thank God I don't live here but if you do, don't even bother.
I would highly L'Abattoir if you are looking for fine dining in Vancouver. Dinner here was amazing to say the least.
The restaurant was quite busy when we arrived (6pm), so we sipped some cocktails while we waited for our table to be ready. Everything is good is this restaurant, even the complimentary bread basket. The steak diane was perfectly cooked, the meat was quite tender and had the right seasoning. The chocolate dessert added the touch of sweetness I needed.
While the meal was nothing cheap, I think it was fairly priced for the quality of food, service and location. I will definitely put this restaurant on my list of places to revisit when I’m in Vancouver.
