We ate here on a cold and rainy December night. We were welcomed immediately at the door by a nice woman who gave us our choice of seats. We had the vegetarian combo for two and some amazing, really snappy ginger beers. The food was extremely good and in large portions with unlimited bread (injera). The service was fast and the food delicious. The only thing is it was really quite in there, I hope more people discover this place to dine at.
Upon recommendation by a friend I went to eat here. Instead of going by his word, I should have read the reviews beforehand.
My expectations arose as I saw that the place was not empty. And for the location it is in, with many other restaurants that also serve Vietnamese, I thought I was making a good choice.
But I was wrong. I had the spring rolls and the pho, both recommended to me. The food was average - I guess I expexted more? But what really bothered me was the low level of hygiene.
Be aware: this place is cash only.
I had put in capitals, not to Yell as this site said but Excited to let everyone know This is The Best!
So Authentic, the most sauces and selection then any other Falafel, Donair, Shawarma place that exists! I have recommended this location to all my Friends and Family, Dr's, Dentists, etc...lol..YOU TOO! I tell it straight up, you will be 100% satisfied if you need to satisfy that craving, this place has risen the Bar so high for middle eastern food! YUM! Oh and the staff over a decade are simply amazing! Very Humble!
Wow, from a Snob at Falafel King to an extremely Personable, Inviting, Kind, helpful Guy at Donair King!!!
G, ya think I should have checked out the ratings before hand, I'm obviously not the only one who has same response to both places! I've been passing up this place due to the crowds at night that are lined up in and about to satisfy their craving. So Happy I finally ended up there during the daytime and had an opportunity to devour one of the Donairs, warmed and toasted like Panini.. so delicious and I was surprised at the décor, I will definitely recommend this to everyone!!!! Yum!
My 75 yr old California Mom and I walked in to Falafel King at my request as hadn't tried this place yet, and will WARN OTHERS NOT TO AS WELL! Who needs this? All I asked when I observed the pickings were slim, is if he had tzatziki sauce? He was so Rude and didn't even have the courtesy to even look at us when he mumbled something about not knowing about Falafels : / really, buddy, all I can say is you copped an attitude that screams to customers to Stay Away and Not even bother. What a stuffed shirt, for what?
But as they say, another's loss is someone else's gain and now I can't wait to refer everyone who has a Falafel or Donair/Shawarma craving ...GO TO THE DONAIR KING on Davie next to Celebrities It IS KING!
and as usual it has several sauces you can choose from!
Best Quality Sweets & Restaurant is worth travelling down a few more blocks from the "main" shopping / restaurant area of Sunset Main St. This was our first experience. We bought a selection of sweets and snacks. All were fresh & flavourful. The service was quick & friendly. The value is fabulous considering the prices seem to be lower than any other place we've been to. The ambiance is not a trendy sit and linger sort in the least sense but it's very clean & casual. We are already talking about how we would like to sit in next time & take sweets to go. There was a steady flow of customers so it looked like they have regulars- this said a lot to us. So are we pleased to say this is our new go to place for sweets? YES. :)
There are 2 restaurants here...one that serves brunch food and one that serves Chinese style
Northern dishes. Hence there are two chefs.
We came here on the recommendation from a friend about how good the noodles are.
It was a 40 min. Wait to get our food and the hand pulled noodles are overdone.plus it is served
In a tomato broth Which is strage
The beef roll was better but still too tough.
So much for thinking a bowl of noodles is a quick lunch . One patron left because the wait is
Needless to say they didn't get a tip.
The Chicken Fried Rice and Chicken Wings are a must try. Afterwards, you can treat yourself a BUBBLE WAFFLE for dessert. They now have bubble tea which i have not tried yet. Very friendly service. I realized that they did clean up the place with new painted walls.
My friend tried the noodle soup and it was great. Portions we're very generous.
I tried the beef yakisoba. First they didn't use the proper type of noodles and the beef was paper thin. Instead of using buckwheat noodles they used ramen. It was served in a casserole dish. It was the worst yakisoba I ever had... It was so greasy and had no taste. I tried adding some soy sauce but it was so greasy even the flavour of the soy sauce could not escape. I would highly recommend you to try this just for the experience. It's like that move Battle Field Earth... Its so bad you have to experience it for yourself.
I was not a big fan of Korean food.
But this place has real something special..
Marinated fried chicken.. Best pairing for beer!!
Just come and try yourself. It tastes something different from those i tried.
Other foods are decent too. It could be great place for both snack and full meal.
Here is their website for menu:
I love Guu. There is no other place I would recommend for izakayas than Guu. I used to be a regular at their original location on Thurlow but ever since I moved apartments I've had to find a new Guu to go to.
No change of taste between locations. I ordered the okonomiyaki with kimchi and it was delicious. Prices for food are low so it is really tempting to order more! I always have to stop myself. The sake is expensive though (duh) with the exception of the house sake. My favourite is the dassai.
No complaints. Even the service is great. People greet you as soon as you come in and are friendly at all times. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!
I was here just about a week ago and I had the butter chicken, naan and fish pakora. The food was stale which resulted in being sick for a few days with food poisoning. I heard from this site the good reviews however they are completely UNTRUE!!
I happen to call the restaurant last week to tell them what had happened to me and how I got sick eating their food. I had spoken to the manager, who while I was trying to tell my story he hung up on me!! Talk about poor customer service skills right there. I was completely shock at his behavior.
I called back later that evening and finally spoke to the owner when I told him about what happen he said there isn't anything he can do for me. I even suggested some sort of compensation and he refused.
I suggest no one go to this place. Very bad service at the restaurant and down right rude employees who work there.
A friend who is from Vancouver recommended us this place for tea. Seeing pictures of it on my phone, I decided to check it out with some friends who were also from out of town.
I guess we chose to arrive as tons of other people because there was a line out the door. First strange or bad encounter was the staff turning people away. We decided to stay and after waiting for 30 minutes or so, got a seat at this coveted tea place.
Once inside, you felt like in some sort of movie. Cutesy china everywhere, which gave me a vibe of being back at my grandma's place. But that's where the fairy tale or whatever you want to call it ended. No one acknowledged us for a while. The place is tiny mind you, which is okay with us, but not the lack of proper seating arrangements. I do not want to be bumping elbows with strangers, thank you.
As for the food and tea itself, it was alright, but nothing to write home about. Tons and tons of options to choose from, and with no help from the waitress, I had to randomly go for the kalahari (not sure how you spell it). Not only did our tea take forever to come, but the waitress never came back to check up on us during our stay. It is okay to have a bad day, just dont take it out on your customers.
Coming from Toronto, we really enjoy our curry houses and do know a thing or two about them. So after playing tennis, we decided to head back to our friend's place where we are staying and ordered some Indian. We were too tired and lazy to get dressed and eat out.
Akbars food tasted just like the one back home. There were a couple of places that came to mind while I devoured the vindaloo. I would have liked a higher chicken pieces to sauce ratio, but the sauce was pretty good. We opted for rice this time and it smelled delicious. Not sure about the prices here but for my usual standards they were not too bad.
Would I order again? If in the area, yes.
I am not at all impressed with this restaurant. Location is good and exterior is modern and presentable. Inside is rather like a canteen layout but the waitress services are extremely poor. Dirty dishes are left all over the tables and the waitresses were more interested with other things than clearing them. When my wife and I went, the waitress asked us to sit on a table with unclear dishes from the previous customer who probably left ages ago. It was not busy and only a few customers who were already served with their food. Despite that, we could not get service for 20 mins. The two waitresses were doing other things that were not customer orientated and we could not even get their attention. We eventually just left and the waitresses looked so surprised. Don't know if the food were great but I do not think I will enjoy it as I would probably be grumpily annoyed with the service. Anyone who have been giving the waitresses full tips must be nuts and guilty of encouraging them with this kind of service.
Lounge with curry? Check. Akbars has been a constant for me and my boyfriend for lunch and dinner as well. The currys are good here and come in a variety of spice levels. Chicken methi, roganjosh and of course the butter chicken, to name a few. Super tasty but can hardly do anything after! My boyfriend likes very spicy food so he has no problem, but I cannot take so much...Be sure to specify how hot you want your food because then if there is a mix up no amount of water in the world will save you from the spiciness! Waiters are very helpful and constantly bring you water (because you will need it). And if you are vegetarian, there are lots of options to try out. Just tell the waiter you are vegetarian and he will help you out picking some options. Depending on when you go, your might get a seat directly or have to wait, but recommended still.
So much better than Dennys.
This homey, cozy family-run place is just the kinds of place you want to be in for breakfast. It reminds me of my mom's place, where I could just wake up late and sluggishly, lazily bring myself to the kitchen.
Lots of people like myself would ignore the 9th because it didn't really stand out or attract but now that i've given it a try a couple of times it is becoming my new favourite breakfast spot for when I'm too lazy to cook. The benny are great, the hollandaise sauce makes it perfect. I always either get a benny or a caesar wrap with some coffee - really good quality coffee btw if you ask me.
Went here for a late lunch or an early dinner at 330pm. Had to wait still for a table for 25 mins. The restaurant was filled. Ordered three breakfast specials which consist of toasts, eggs, bacon etc and I ordered the pork belly sandwich. The food was tasty and hot. The breakfast specials was very good and plentiful. The pork belly sandwich was delicious, a bit too rich if you did not ration the bread to pork. The service was decent and the ambiance was colorful to the area. I enjoyed the food and found the experience to be positive till we had to pay. When we first sat down to order, I mentioned that I had 2 entertainment coupon which states buy one meal and get the second meal free up to (approx. $10). I asked specifically if we could use both these coupons as we are ordering 4 entrees as we do not venture to Vancouver that ofter. The waitress stated yes. So when it came to pay the bill, we were told that they can only honor one of the coupon. I inquired why and the head waitress stated that our waitress is new and was not familiar with the entertainment coupon. If there was an issue or she felt that she did not know the answer, she should have asked someone who would known as the only reason we ordered 4 entrees is to use the coupons. If we were told only one coupon, then we would have ordered less as the kids did not eat that much. The head waitress try to press the issue that the waitress is new, but I said that was not my problem. Eventually they honored the entertainment coupon. A little misunderstanding but the overall experience at Red Wagon was positive.
Babylon definitely stands out for its quality of shawarmas in Vancouver. The place itself is not the most spacious or fancy to be in, so I usually order to-go. The interiors however do not match up to the quality of the food but there's always adjustments to make here and there. You can for example sit outside and enjoy the view of the bay. The chicken shawarma is extremely delicious, the quality of the meat is great and the chicken is marinated with all sorts of yummy flavours. Best value for your buck here, a wrap is around 8 dollars and 1 dollar extra if you get a plate. The Chicken Shawarma and falafel is a must.
I love this restaurant. The owners are incredibly warm, and the food is well priced and simply delicious. The vegetarian platter is a colourful and flavourful sampling. The meat dishes are all appropriately spiced with lots of complex flavours. This is a social eating experience - highly recommended for friends, family or date night!
