Overpriced pho
By chopcritic of Vancouver (8 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, April 3, 2017 - 9:26am [Dine in]

I heard some great reviews from a friend, so I decided to try it. But when I looked at their menu, their Pho's were completely overpriced for Vietnamese food! Maybe the locals in Kerrisdale would pay for this price, but people from other areas would flinch. Who would pay for a large Pho which is $2 more than a small Pho? Other Vietnamese restaurants would charge $0.5 to $1, but I have never seen $2 more for a large! When I received my large Pho expecting to be something special, all I find are the portions are the same as a small which I saw someone eating on the next table and just more SOUP! And the flavours of their pho soup are just borderline average. I can eat at any other Pho restaurants for far less a price and eat the same type of Pho. Just so you know a small is $9 and large $11. So disappointing!

Not inexpensive but worth the extra cost

The place is not cheap but for a non-Jewish guy who has lived in Montreal and Toronto and as well spent time in NYC I have found the food outstanding from deli to baked goods.

And actually, I love the service; the management is not only friendly and of great assistance but also highly intelligent. Do I wish the cost of a meal were a little less expensive? Absolutely......but I love the place and I am willing to pay bit more for quality and service as well as to support a business owned by people whom I understand are worth my patronage.

The service used to be very good, but not so much now. The pastries are as good as any in the city, but I'm not willing to stand around and wait when I can go across the street and get really good service at Transylvania, which has a different but equally good selection. I wonder what happened, the staff seems to have changed.

I was craving a Peanut Buster Parfait.....went to the one on Kingsway on my way back home.....I usually go to the one in N. BBy carlton square?

Seems like a nice cozy place when I went inside....saw a man at the cashier first...then he went into the back and it looks very dark...not enough light....needs to be brighter....then I was thinking about getting chicken fingers with fries to go also....but I do not trust if the man or whoever is in the back washed their hands after handling the money.....and money is very very dirty....

The lady that took over....do not know if it was the wife....very pleasant and she knew what she was doing....efficient.....
when I got home I put the parfait in the freezer because I then wanted to eat a sandwich first....it wasn't as good as I remembered whenever I get this dessert....

Just I hope they put more light so its nice and bright and wash wash wash those hands.....please!!!!!!!!!!
Show the people what you did....put a small sink in the front for the employees.....I think they were the owners for this franchise.....

Good Pizza but......
By maggiemia of East Vancouver, BC (27 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, March 5, 2017 - 10:23pm [Dine in]

this was my second time coming to this place....the pizza is good but I always look up at the cooks...just in the front there where they are making pizza only...the kitchen you can not see...its a very small small place and I think it opens at 5pm and we went on a Tues. nite....four of us...
so no long line up...just beware of this...long line ups....

I looked at the two guys making the pizza and saw the one guy touch his nose as if he wanted to clean it or pick it.......only stating what I see....and I hope they read this comment so they don't do it again. I think he had dark hair and beard....? It was in February that we went.

I do not usually trust people in restaurants at all....especially Asians.... me being Italian born here.....they are some Italians that are dirty also.....but do not trust people and friends at home....I am a little ocd....but sometimes as you know you have to close one eye....

the pasta that nite was awful...too much al dente...and not enough sauce at all...too dry....
the salad was too big for the plate and bacon on it....the appie with the cold cuts was ok....you want antipasto then probable go to the true Italian restaurants like L'Artista...mind you its been a while....I really miss Al Forno in Gastown years back....so good....the pizza brick oven like now....but I tell ya....it was the Best in those days in Vancouver.

I don't believe in tipping and I do tip...I am not cheap but I just don't believe in it too much....I think its like a another meal there......from $10 and up....
I was reading some of my old comments and Moulin Rouge Rest. did close down...thank God and Cheers is gone....the Sweet Cherubim has changed their menu I believe, so its easier to read.

Too bad that Dine Here does not have just comments sections....
All in All Via Tevere is a good place for food....I only recommend the Pizza.....its the same dough I believe that Famoso, Lombardo's, Marcello's and all these new places for pizza brick oven style uses....type 00 flour from Naples....
I just hope the rest. reads this and tells the people behind the counter not to touch themselves and put cameras in the kitchen so the owners can see what goes on....if the staff are being dirty!!!! This goes for all the Resturants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently the place to go for handmade soba noodles. You gotta be aware, make a reservation. Early, like maybe even week in advance, else you will never get in.

Nice cozy little place, no complaints.
Service, well, they wait staff is quite attentive and responsive. Friendly too, not much I can complain about that aspect. But it's sloooooow. I saw a few other tables around us who had gotten there around sametime or even a bit earlier. We all left around the same time as well and the total meal time was going over 2 hours, and it's not like there was a constant stream of dishes. You get one, then you wait...then another tiny dish then you wait...some types of food and restaurant are amenable to this type of dragged out meal (which can be quite enjoyable), but not here.

Now the food, well, no complaints about the quality of the ingredients in general, but the execution was not mindblowing by any measure. We had a bit of everything.
Some grilled/seared fish was pretty much same as I could get anywhere else. They had sushi (who goes there for sushi?) which generally got good reviews from our table, but it was inconsistent. We had 2 orders and they weren't prepared the same, one piece had WAY too much ginger on it and completely overpowered the bland fish. We also had a grilled fish head/neck (hamachi if I recall), but that was a miss, very large but it was definitely on the fishy side. Ordered an udon as well which was quite good but ... I don't think it was udon, more like somen. And the soba? Well you could definitely taste that it was different. The different broths provided were good, no complaints. But is the handmade soba better? Hmmm... I think the jury is out on this one. (We have been to some fine, fine soba place in Tokyo).
The desert, we had a sampling of the pudding, jelly and ice cream+ganache. It was ok, definitely enjoyable, but really, with Thomas Haas down the street and numerous other dessert places nearby you got to be really different or really good.

Total cost came out to around $50 a person or so, no drinks. Given the long wait, need to reserve and nothing particularly outstanding and being rather pricey, I think I will likely give it a pass for next time.
It is good quality and clearly they have some regulars, but maybe that's due to lack of competition in the neighbourhood rather than people traipsing out here from across town.

This place just feels good. People are friendly. They sell Red Truck Ale. There's live music! They just changed their menu. I like The Shephard's pie, duck club, and the nachos. I don't appreciate the new breading on the wings but they can be ordered without the breadcrumbs. It's called the "gluten free wings"

Really? You're going to "Wow" me with a sandwich?
By Gotmygrooveback of Maple Ridge, B.C (16 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, February 24, 2017 - 1:15pm [Dine in]

The board out front boasts 'best sandwich in town' - Yeah, right - you are going to 'wow' me with a sandwich? or soup? or a salad? C'mon....

I'd eat those words but I'm just too full from the BEST chicken club and tomato soup I have EVER HAD! I wanted to go someplace else but my friend insisted. I'm glad she did! I would highly recommend this place. We each had something different - me the sandwich and soup - and my friend had a spinach salad that she said was likely the best she's had. They are not skimpy with the fixins either! You can buy their bread too.

I'm definitely going back - I can hardly wait for the next lunch out!

the place fills up quickly - the table set up is 'communal' and I don't mind that so much except the guys at the other end of table kept hitting the table and moving it so I had to be careful not to slop my soup. There isn't a lot of seating - good thing summer's just around the corner. I only gave the 'ambiance' a 2 because of the noise. The music was really loud and then to fill up the place on top of that - people talking even louder to be heard over the music.....

The only thing I really didn't care for was having them take my name - I prefer a number system or something - the place got busy and I didn't hear the girl walking around calling my name.... I don't like that.

Valentines Night, unlucky maybe?
By vancouverpiggie of burnaby (53 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, February 14, 2017 - 11:15pm [Dine in]

This is our second time here, and the experience was worse than the first time. First time was actually alright.

I am trying to give La Cigale the benefit of a doubt, maybe even persuade myself that it's Valentines and everyone's just hectic and busy - especially French restaurants.

But tonight at La Cigale, it seemed everything was just off the track.

At 37.00 per head for the Valentines prix fixe menu, I won't complain about the value. It's not pricey and good for people who want an overall solidly designed and set up French bistro gastrique experience.

Most of my reviews below are due to one critical flaw tonight. NOT ENOUGH SERVERS.

---

1. Reservation.

We made a reservation around 2 weeks before Valentines (Today). I would have expected better seat placements or at least give some time to clear one of the now vacated tables so those with reservation could at least feel it was worth giving their time to reserve in the first place.

We stepped into the restaurant and waited at the door for nearly 10 minutes before being greeted and than were told to pick one of the empty seats. There were 3 empty tables. 1 by the door (Literally by the door), 1 by the call out kitchen order window and one somewhere in between. The seats by the call out order window were too narrow for a regular guy to fit in (Girls "Should" be fine if you are thin and petite).

We asked the server if they could clear the now vacated table beside the restaurant window. It's a great table after all and should take no more than 5 minutes to clear.

The server said sure. We waited another 5 minutes before being told it's going to be awhile and we should just pick one of the empty tables.

Now there were only 2 tables left. By the door or by the order window. Guess we were forced to sit by the door.

I am lenient, to an extent so I was trying to think of better moments later tonight.

---

2. Sit Down

Upon sitting down, it was nearly another 10 minutes before a server came by and gave us tonight's menu. Another 10 minutes before we got our water.

---

3. Service

Now, I understand fatigue, business but I do think the main culprit tonight were simply lack of servers. I don't really blame the servers, they are doing their best. I blame the management, who could not foresee the importance of today for many patrons.

On one note, servers did confuse many people's table's orders and had - for our duration stay of nearly 2 hours, uncertainly ask the tables if this was their order or our order before realizing the dishes were for another table.

---

4. Food

Food was ok, and I am reviewing this aspect in relations to the amount paid. I don't expect 5 star cooking paying only 37.00 a head. what sort of surprised me was at the golden hour of tonight's service - between 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM - the kitchen ran out of their most in demand meat - duck. There were really only 4 entrees to choose from - 2 pastas, 1 beef, 1 duck. Duck was out during the most busiest time. A let down indeed.

We ended up ordering the mushroom and seafood pasta. Both were solid, but not wow.

Appetizers were 1 tart, onion soup and salad. We got the soup and salad. Salad was quite a let down. It's a salad and at least it could have been made with more texture, flare and variety.

The onion soup was very good and was the star of tonight's menu. The desserts - creme brulee, lava cake and blue berry crumble. We got the lava cake and blue berry crumble.

Both desserts were a let down. no texture variation. Lava cake had no outer layer, just tasted like a very heavy and melted puddle of chocolate jam. The crumble was slightly better but still, a bit more texture variance would have been better. Too sweet as well the desserts.

---

Redemption

At the end of our bill, the servers did kindly surprise us with a 10% discount on our total.

We felt this was the only little redeeming quality tonight but not enough to save the poor experience we encountered. We still left a friendly tip amount as we understand restaurant industry is hard work.

For this place to improve, it's not the amount they charge as even if they charged 50.00 or 100.00 per head, if they do not up their game in terms of service and cuisine design, it will be very hard to attain loyal patrons in Vancouver's cut throat restaurant market.

We will not be returning any time soon.

Horrible!

I ordered Philadelphia rolls through Just Eat and they gave me rolls with asparagus and no avocado. I told them I got the wrong order and they said "no that's how they're made. All our customers know this!" and yelled at me. I checked the menu again (both on the justeat website AND their own sushiwind website) and confirmed that no, there's no asparagus and there is supposed to be avocado and they got my order wrong. After asking for the right food or a refund they said "There's nothing we can do for you, talk to JustEat."

So I called Just Eat, who has very friendly customer service, and they said they would call the restaurant. They said the restaurant was really unhelpful but they eventually got me a full refund, as long as I didn't eat any of the sushi. I said that was fine and apologizes that she had to talk to the restaurant. She told me the restaurant wants to come pick up the sushi from me, but it will take "three hours" because they're busy.

So I'm now waiting with sushi back in the bag as it gets warm and old. I don't know what they're serving people but I hope it's not this. Disgusting!

So last week; I came here with a few friends. We were pretty much seated right away. server came and took our order.....I ordered my usual double double burger......some friends had various things.

The food was ok (but the next morning I felt sick and well......) which is odd, because I always get the same thing, but never feel sick afterwards.

On top of that; one of my friends gave me a gift card for $25 (Cara restaurant chain.....Milestone's , swiss chalet...etc) but since I was going around talking to my guests....at the end of the night I forgot my gift card (in an envelope with a card)

a couple hours later I realized this and called the restaurant and asked if I left my card behind (manager said that our table had been cleaned already and they probably threw everything in the garbage)

Ok, I understand needing to clean the table......but when picking up the envelope, did the server lose their sense of feel / touch and not realizing something thick was in the envelope and perhaps turn it in to the lost and found? or did they see that one of my guests gave me a gift card to a competitor restaurant; and despite choosing to come here after seeing a gift card from somewhere else they decide to throw it out since it was competitor.

Nice location though, iffy about food since got sick....plus they throw out my gift (really hoping it was an accident though) so I think I will pass......Maybe I should had gone to Milestone's instead

Overpriced for low quality food and poor hospitality

Submitted Thursday, December 22, 2016 - 7:26pm [Take-out]

I heard great things about this place and I have tried their cream of mushroom soup and fried chicken and I was quite pleased with it until my last order which was the Chicken Giant sandwich. A nice piece of breast meat deep fried as usual but the cheese they put in the sandwich was nothing but regular processed cheese? I can't believe that they can't afford to put real sliced cheese on their $17.00 sandwich!!! Not very good business sense if you ask me. Sent them a message thru their website and did not get any reply back from them and that was 2 months ago. Followed up with them with their direct email address (as previously I left my concerns on their message board) and finally got a hold of Brian. His reply is what surprises me especially considering that he is in the hospitality industry. I would post the whole conversation but feel that would be stooping to their level. Suffice to say is that their response sounds like more of a dismissal and acknowledges no wrong doing.
Anyone raving about this place is either friends of the people that work there or got paid to put their 5 star review.

I had never been to this restaurant because I thought it might be pricey. I was wrong, the prices are excellent and the food is as well. I had chicken kabobs, which came with rice (or salad) and a broiled tomato. I asked for bread, and I got pita with raw onion, which the server said was standard fare in Persian restaurants. Since I love onions, I wasn't unhappy. The chicken was excellent, a large portion and the rice was perfect. I can't fault them for a single thing. Nice looking place, good service and a great deal. What more could you ask?

I was in the area and feeling nostalgic so came to Pho Hoa. Food was solid. HOWEVER, the portions have considerably shrunk. What used to be a small bowl is now considered a large bowl of pho with just the basics. The price has skyrocketed to $11.50 including tax. Yikes.

Needless to say there were only three different tables for a total of five patrons including myself. This place used to be the 'grand daddy' of all pho places to me but no more.

Stay away.

I haven't been back to this restaurant for a few years now. I thought I would give it try again with my husband. We had 8:00pm reservations and our table was not ready. At 8:10 the bar was offered to us and we decided to sit at the bar and have dinner there too. We ordered the bison carpaccio (shared). Husband had pork belly, scallops and I had the elk loin for dinner. Normally we would share an appetizer and have our own entrees and we would be more than satisfied. To our surprise, at this restaurant the portions were extremely small for their "larger" plates. I usually eat at the smaller portion level already and after eating here I was still craving for a burger. The way they priced the plates you would think you get a decent amount of food. It's not the case here. I look around the restaurant and wonder what other people are ordering. There is no way everyone is leaving here full unless you order your own appetizer, entrée and other small plates to keep you satisfied. My husband and I will not be going back again. Yes, the food was delicious, the ambience was nice and service was great but it's also about value.

Terrible service. I called to make a reservation for a party 12 to celebrate the holidays with my coworkers. The man on the phone told me that he put my name down and I that my reservation is confirmed. The next day I noticed on their website that they require a $100 deposit for larger parties which the man on the phone never asked me for. I thought it was strange so called in to verify my reservation and (as expected) they did not have my reservation nor did they not have space to accommodate us anymore. The person on the phone did not offer much of an apology except offered another day for our group of 12 (which requires EVERYONE to change their plans - these are people with family schedules to juggle around so it's not exactly easy to simply change dates). He did not seem very apologetic/embarrassed with the incompetence of his staff either. Definitely will not be booking any further after work functions here.

You order at the counter and then they bring out the food. The food was good but it was very noisy with all the bang etc. Hard to have a conversation. They were super busy and had lots of take out orders. I will go back but will do a take out. Lots of meter street parking. Prices were a bit on high side for Indian food. Naan or Rice are included with your entrée. The food tasted good.

We tried the brussel sprout salad for the first time. So good.

The nachos and tacos are good. Fresh ingredients, makes it messy but fun to eat.
