Zesty serves an eclectic menu ranging from pasta, burgers/sandwiches, chicken, steaks and more.
We decided to go here one night (as we work our way through all the places on the Drive) and were really pleasantly surprised. The place looks a little run down and dingy, but the food was fresh and prices excellent. We had a filling meal, and left happy...
I don't know what animal my steak came from, but I think it came in last at Hastings Park. I wouldn't go back here if they were giving away doggy bags. I wouldn't go if someone else were paying. I can only hope they give up the space and someone else gives it a try.
In our search to replace our long time standard (JK Pasta Bar) since it changed owners and did a dive bomb in foo and service quality we stumbled across Zawa (formerly Zesty).
The breakfast selection is fantastic, offering 3 different benny's, a long list of interesting omelet's, as well as some standards (bacon & eggs, french toast etc) and a couple of somewhat different choices like chorizo and eggs. They have tasty daily specials posted as well.
They offer free range eggs as a nice option as well.
In a half dozen visits I've tried the following:
Regular Eggs Benny (ham)- perfectly poached eggs, nice ham, fresh muffin... Hollandaise sauce was acceptable but tasted a bit "packaged"
Smoked Salmon Benny: same as above benny, however the salmon was a hearty portion and was a little overpowering, but hey, you may like it that way... At least they didn't cheap out!
Omelet's.
Daily Special Omelet: had Chorizo, Mushroom and Cheese. Was light and fluffy, with a fair amount of filling....
And finally: Steak and Eggs: This is where the restaurant truly shined... The steak was marinated and season with fresh rosemary, it was thick and jucey and bother orders at our table wee cooked to perfection. They seemed to really take pride in this dish and a really showed... I highly recommend it!
The decor could definitely use improvement, although it seems clean. The servers are friendly and do an adequate job of refilling coffee etc.
I always go here to eat one thing and one thing only, the Mexicano Wrap for breakfast. It's always delicious and I'm always stuffed afterwards. I only wish they served decent coffee, it's basically disgusting and is likely the world's most effective cure for constipation. Service is good.
We went here on a whim the other day for lunch and it turned out to be a good choice. I had the Popeyes Sandwhich which was a great spinach, mushroom, green peppers and feta mix. My partner had the big burger and it was good as well.
Somewhat slow service as only 1 waitress working the whole place, but worth it I guess. Some unique menu items, a nice big patio and cheap prices to boot... $5-$10
This place may have undergone a name-change, I can't remember, but damn. The French toast was the worst I've ever had. Some genius thought 2.5 inch slices of french bread were a good idea, especially if you only soaked them in egg for maybe a second or two. Then, fry them for a scant time so they aren't even golden brown, just yellow hunks of bread. Then, charge $9, along with a 3-dollar cup of Earl grey Tea!! Starbucks sounds like a good place to save a coupla bucks, no?
bad food at a premium price. Yay.
I admit, I was first drawn here by the cheap prices...and I almost exclusively go for breakfast but I've yet to be disappointed. The service is always decent, not spectacular but I've had lots worse, and the meals are a good size for a very good price. The decor is not very exciting, although they have recently changed a few things, but I visit for thier good filling breakfast and good prices...ps. the swiss and mushroom omlette is rich but really tasty!
Now known as ZAWA.
There were no drinks menu so we had to ask the waitress to repeat the menu to us several times as our crew arrived at different times.
There were no pop refills which was a disappointment; coffee was refillable though.
Service was slow. Waitress claimed they only had one cook, which was likely since it was the Sunday of a look weekend, and our table of 7 plus another table of 4 ordered all at once. Waitress was all smiles but tended to mumble as she sped past our table, miraculously balancing all sorts of things on her arms and hands. There was another dude serving, but he was not in uniform; he was a lot more grumpy and didn't really do much, only manning the cash register for some take-out orders.
Food was decent; nothing remarkable about my roast lamb or the appetisers and pastas everyone else got; they were satisfying enough both in taste and portion.
