Zakkushi Charcoil Grill is a Japanese grill house serving charcoal grilled meat and seafood as well as salads, appetizers and sashimi.
I once loved this place a lot.
But this place is really going downhill. Food is disappointing. From skewered grilled items to salad and tapas. Nothing was as good as before. Servers are not as enthusiastic either.
It's was on my favorite restaurants list. But it disappointed me enough I will remove its name from it.
It's not easy to get a table and parking. This place is not cheap either. Without good food and service, I would say don't bother, and just go somewhere else.
everything tastes good and is hot! You can order to your hearts desire and it never ends up costing too much. Most of the desserts are under $2!
Favorites included whatever the first one in the yakitori section is, and the cheese and tomato one.
Hands down, Zakkushi is one of the best Japanese restaurants ever. There are just so many selections to fulfill anybody's needs, and it's freshly grilled just before it reaches your table. One problem I'm having at this place is that I end up spending too much solely on food rather than enjoying some drinks along with the food.
Zakkushi is THE place for skewers, so I would suggest that your orders revolve mostly around the skewers section of the menu. Some favorites are: shiso maki (the best!), cheese tsukune, p-toro, nori mayo tsukune, and memaki. If you don't mind trying new things, it would be wise for you to order each of the skewers and decide which ones you like enough to order again for a second round. Aside from skewers, the butashabu salad, ebi mayo, and mentai kimchi udon are also good choices. As the last touch, I would also recommend the yakitori don special. I'm not sure what special ingredient they put in there, but I just love their don special as the last dish. And of course, all of these go extremely well with your favorite glass of draft beer :)
I've compared the 4th location with the Denman location, and the menus are virtually the same. However, I would recommend the 4th location since it's a little less busy and very cozy due to its smaller size. And I love their washroom! It has the cutest faucet.. Oh, and the waiter who works on Thursdays is also very cute. (I think this proves that I go here too often..)
We finally tried this place out after hearing rave reviews. I had the agadeshi tofu and ahi tuna tataki. While the food was fairly good, the portions were really small. The boy had some chicken skewers, scallop carrpacio, and chicken udon. He didn't seem too impressed but also didn't really complain.
The service was very friendly but what's up with the timing of the food? Everything came bit by bit spaced out by at least 10 or 15 minutes. We spent most of the time watching the other person eat. The udon took almost an hour to make it to the table and we were one of only two parties. What gives?
Overall we're not impressed. For $70 I left hungry and wanting more. Oh well.... live and learn, right? If you have a lot of money to burn and time to wait for food, it's probably worth it... but I won't be returning.
Go and Go again.
Little pieces of BBQ meat on sticks and a cold Japanese beer. What more do you need??
The Salmon in foil is incredible and if I could ever figured out how to do it I would be much more popular than I currently am.
Go and you will thank yourself and be mad at all those who never told you about it sooner.
Really small and hard to get into but once your in you never want to leave.
This restaurant was recommended by a friend and it's awesome. The inside looks like the inside of a sauna room. It even smells like one. It's a very very very small restaurant, so I recommend reservations. I had a variety of skewers, home made tofu, raw octopus with wasabi (so good), etc.
Cons: Your plates don't get cleared right away. You kind of have to hand them off to the waiter/waitress.
The washroom is really neat. Water comes out of a bamboo-looking spout.
We used to go to Zakkushi on Denman, but haven't been there in over a year since we discovered their location on 4th. It's smaller, but has great ambiance (check out the sink in their washroom) and the service is quicker and more attentive. I've found that the service at the Denman location can be kind of slow due to the restaurant's larger size, and the food has just that bit less attention paid to it.
The food at the 4th Avenue location is pretty sublime. I'm very fond of the tsukune and their various salads in particular. This is one of those places where I drag people from out of town - last year I took along a couple of friends from San Diego and they were blown away.
Looking forward to trying the Main Street location now.
The place is TINY! Maneuvering around to the washroom is a hazard and forget about lining up inside b/c you're gonna trip up the servers.
It makes me wonder if I've EVER been to a restaurant as small as this one.
Overall the servers are efficient and polite, and the hostess tries her best to accomodate the waiting people.
The food is quite good, the only thing that is quite disappointing is the amount of food for the price. In the end, I had to go somewhere else to eat, after two of us spent over $40, just to feel satisfied (and I'm not a big eater I swear).
Overall, nice, but I'm not sure I'll go back again, esp with other options like Guu and Hapa (slightly different flavours, but more bang for the buck).
I been to this place several times already, the skewers were grilled just right! Although the place is tiny, but it gives you a really Japan-like feeling.
I've been loving everything about this place until today. I think they have to improve on how to treat customers. Today my friends and I went to this place without reservation, they told us to wait, and we had no problem with that. After 2 hours they called us in and informed us that we will have to share a square table with 3 other people who came it way later than us. If it was at the bar then it's totally cool, but at a square table!? We ended up leaving the place, because it would have been too weird to sharing a square table with 3 other total strangers. It would have been better if they informed us about sharing table earlier so we could made wiser decision about whether to wait or not.
I've been to Zakkushi many times and I highly recommend it. Its a great place to go with a few friends and the prices are fantastic for the value.
A few favourites are:
Spinach and Lotus Root Salad - fantastic dressing and great portion.
Fried Squid Calamari - excellent with a mustard based sauce.
The sticks are great, especially the beef with daikon and asparagus with bacon.
I love the Mochi - sticky fried rice.
Mango pudding, as stated by someone else is delicious.
A great spot to go, but its becoming more and more necessary to make a reservation.
