The Wolf & Hound is an Irish pub with homemade Irish pub fare and an extensive beer selection. Traditional Irish breakfast and roast beef and yorkshire puddings on Sundays. Live music Wednesaday - Sunday starting at 8:30 pm.
The Wolf and Hound is one of the few remaining 'neighbourhood watering holes' in Kitsilano. At almost any time of the day or night you can expect to see the usual suspects keeping the shine on the bar with the sleeves of their coats. It's a strange mix sometimes of this old guard, rowdy university students, young professionals, and families, but that's what makes good traditional pubs good-they're a meeting place and a mix of all kinds. The ambience is pretty good in that way- always someone to talk to over a beer, including the servers and bartenders, who are friendly.
Some decent beer on tap-- the Storm Black Plague and Highland Scottish Cream Ale being highlights, as well as the essential Irish imports. It would be nice to see fewer Russell taps and more attention to good beer- smaller local brews, rotating features, and actually decent tasting beer would be handy. (Many a regular cried foul when they removed the R&B IPA)
There's always beer on special for 12.95 a pitcher though, which is one of the cheaper beer specials I've seen around town (no-- 19.95 for a pitcher of granville island does not count as a special)
Live music a few nights a week-- best is the celtic sessions on Fridays, and the irish guy that plays thursdays.
The food is pretty decent, especially for pub food-- there are the usual onion rings, burgers, fish and chips etc- but there are also some good appies that don't feel like they're clogging your arteries-- bruschetta is yummy and the spinach salad. Plus classics like bangers and mash and a real irish breakfast (with real irish bacon!).
Service is always good-- it gets pretty busy on weekend nights but my servers have always been friendly and personable- even with large groups. I went there once with a huge group and the server learned everyone's name by the end of the night and gave us separate bills! Sunday brunch is good- not too busy but good eggs benny and the two girls who worked brunch all through the summer were great- really friendly and lots of fun, great service.
Just moved away from kits but hope to return when I can for a pint! Get more local brews on tap!
I've been by this place a few times but never ventured inside. When I found out a few people I know were having a celebration there, I figured it'd be a great time to finally try it out. I was very impressed.
In my opinion, what this place has the most going for it is willingness to be different from most other pubs and bars in the Kits neighbourhood. Not only does it succeed in being different by cultivating an authentic Irish pub feel, offering some great live (and not overly loud) music and some of the most personable service I've had in a while, but the clientele seemed to be real, down to earth people - not exactly an everyday occurrence in this part of town.
If you're looking to have some quality food and grab a drink while at the same time feeling comfortable enough to really let your hair down, check this place out.
If you've been to this place anytime in the last year and prior to that, you probably know this place is under knew management. The atmosphere has shifted somewhat from a place where you bring kids and some guy plays the fiddle on a Sunday morning over a full Irish breakfast to a slighty schizophrenic little place that isn't sure if it wants to maintain what made it great or become a run-of-the-mill sports bar. I'm still giving it high ratings, because the food and service are still solid, but if you wanted a place that felt like an authentic Irish pub and got some mildly impressive decor and a Guinness, you'd probably be disappointed.
The menu itself is notable for its fries, poutine and onion rings, which have all maintained their standards. Everything else is slightly unremarkable, e.g. the fish and chips are very good (I mentioned the latter before), but they're not the best I've ever had. As a whole, it still comes together quite nicely, and is still a cut above pretty much every other pub in the area.
Wonderful pub. Friendly staff, great new menu. The dishes are fresh and homemade. Had the new shroom caps, so delicious.... Prawns with a little pot of real butter and chunks of fresh garlic.
Clean and inviting, with great decor. Feels like somebody's house it's so comfortable. The homemade lamb burger is to die for. And the roast beef dinners and lamb roast dinners on the weekend are better than Mom ever made. As you can tell I am a big fan, and go to this little gem often.
I think the new ownership has really got it all goin' on.
I went here wanting some good traditional pub fare
We ordered the cod and chips and the Irish stew. The fish and chips were fine, but do yourself a favour and go elsewhere for fish and chips that are much cheaper and just as good.
The Irish stew was uninspired and undercooked, you could make a much better one at home.
I was really disappointed and, for 25$ each for a mediocre meal and a beer, this place sucks.
I thought I'd check this Irish pub /restaurant out even though it was out by West Broadway near Alma. I read some reviews beforehand and thought it was good enough to try and it also had entertainment. I brought my parents, who are also restauranteurs themselves and thought they would enjoy a pub styled restaurant since they've never been to one. In addition, they always enjoy critiquing a place and comparing it to their own place. We arrived around 7:15 pm on a Friday without appointment, we were greeted very promptly and had plenty of seats to choose from. The place was warm and comfortable. We ordered a few martinis, and the "spinach and artichoke dip" with tortilla chips for appy, and it was very tasty. For entrees, most of opted the 8 oz NY steak ($16.95) and added prawns ($4.95) and I had the Cannemara chicken potpie with salad. My family agreed the steak was delicious (fresh and tender) and my parents said it was way better than eating at the Keg. Music, violins and singing started around 8:20 pm....and I was pleasantly surprised as the entertainment wasn't on a stage, but rather from a table booth where the musicians were sitting, across from our table. The singing and music was not too loud, ie no microphones or speakers, so it was enjoyable. By the time we finished, we were absolutely stuffed. I would have gone for the creme brulee but, it would be pushing the limits, so we passed. I'm not sure what the weekends would be like at this place, but you should check out their website. I chose friday to come here because they have different music venues on different days, I wanted something very Irish. I think I like this Irish pub better than the other Irish pub in Gastown.
Hubby and I took daughter and son-in-law for a pre-theatre drink and dinner. We were there at 6:00 on a Saturday evening, and had our choice of places to sit.
Appealingly set-up, smaller side areas to carve up the space nicely. Service was great. Prompt and pleasant. They have Russell beers on tap - yay Russell - and we had Celtic Ale.
The food was....um, OK. We ordered burgers and steak sandwiches, with a bucket of onion rings as an extra. Caesar salad was bland and limp, fries were limp, onion rings greasy. Perhaps the oil wasn't hot enough...? Steaks and burgers were great, and the steaks were done exactly to our specifications.
No desserts, no time. Signs all over the place say they have live music. Guess we were there too early, but we had to head out for the theatre.
This place is fantastic! A couple of friends and I came in to see a musician who plays on Thursday nights. We were pleasantly surprised with the warm cozy ambiance. There are 2 sort of living room areas perfect for curling up in with a pint of Guinness. The walls were covered with the most amazing Irish memorabilia, I could have been there for days looking over everything. The music was great, a good mix of traditional and new, the musician was also hilarious. Great beer selection, I tried a local beer called Black Plague Stout. As dark as Guinness but sweeter. The menu was quite diverse with some standard "pub food" items. I had the nightly special, beer braise pork loin, delicious! It also said on the menu that there is live music 5 nights a week. As the night went on it got really busy, but the service never failed. A true Kitsilano gem, I can't wait to go back.
Had dinner there last night the appys were ok had some dry ribs not bad large buckets of fries and onion rings were kinda neat. they go great with the good beer selection. For the main i had bangers and mash....not so good ....only 2 sausages mash lacked flavor my carrots were under cooked would go back for the great beer selection but not for dinner
