The Winking Judge Pub serves draft beers from around the world, premium scotch and spirits, and a menu of West Coast pub fare with an English twist.
Having time to kill before a cheap-night Tuesday flick, T & I decided to hit the patio across from the Scotiabank Ctr instead of Diva at the Met. We had a choice of a couple outside or inside tables on a sunny day, though the pub was full from happy hour. The decor is decent--heavy stone tiled tables outside. Fun bathrooms.
The patio was a little noisy next to the traffic, but the people-watching made for great convo. Decent menu with English pot-pie fare, ok beer selection, and mediocre wine selection. I ordered a Stanley Park on tap, but it came to the table a little flat. Same with the 1516 and Moosehead T ordered, though they were more lightly carbonated than mine. I was a bit jealous of the people next to us who wisely got kronenbourg blanc and blanche du chambly in bottles instead.
We went with crab cakes, a standard burger and the veggie pastry entree. Crab cakes--perfectly soft and slightly crisp, with a chipotle mayo. small to medium puck-size, about what you would expect for the reasonable price. Nothing terribly remarkable, just a good ol' crabby patty. Same with the burger. Absolutely standard and satisfying.
My roasted veggie pastry with fried goat cheese was the big surprise. The goat cheese was about 1cm thick and the diameter of a fist--quite generous! AND the flavour was strong. We split up the patty and added it to the side house salads--superb. It made a regular pub experience stand out. Pastry was perfect. Entree was light fare--felt healthy. Fair prices--a nice change from the Donnelly group standards.
Service was standard. We had our server visit us for drinks, menu selection, delivery, second drink order, third to quality check, fourth for the bill. It was at a leisurely pace. Don't go to a pub for a rush job, folks. Take it easy, or hit the bar for self-serve drinks before sitting down.
Not bad for a littl' place in the heart of an expensive neighbourhood.
This was my fourth time to WJP which is normally a great place but this certainly put a bitter taste in my mouth.
I was just there on Saturday, grabbed a seat at the bar, restaurant was moderately busy BUT I sat there for over 20 minutes and no one, NO ONE, said a word to me! There were 3 staff including a bartender doing their thing, he looked at me twice and still not even a hello!!!
I was basically right beside their POS system, it's not like I was hidden away in some random corner with a menu over my face. Probably the worst experience I have had in a very long time.
So its really interesting how at the EP-Centre of Vancouver there is a little judge that is Winking.........maybe even smiling from all the people that see him!
Good Drinks (nothing more then the usual, but good specials, and lovely cocktails/pints.
Food is good old fashioned pub style food...........but much much mcuh better then regular mozza sticks, chicken fingers or chicken wings..............they actual have PUB FAIRE!!!!
English pub fair done right and not expensive!!!
Not to mention its opened till 2am.........this place is a mini-gold-mine!
Hurray to the Judge, and lets make sure he winks every night forever!
I agree with other reviewers in that it is a nice place. They serve decent pub food. The service however leaves a lot to be desired. Last time I was there, the waitress didn't bring the second drink that I ordered. After 15 minutes I decided that I no longer wanted it. Then she came over again and asked us if we wanted anything else. We said that we're ok for now. We still haven't finished our food. Few minutes later she brought us the bill even though we never asked for it! Overall, bad attitude and quite rude. There are many other pubs that serve good pub food and have far better service. I will give this place a miss for the foreseeable future and would NOT recommend it to a friend.
